        The annnual UQCS Hackathon is on again. We're kicking off Friday with dinner and team forming, but if you're already in a team you're free to start hacking right away. Lunch and dinner on both days is on us so you can focus on producing something awesome in time for presentations on Sunday afternoon. After presentations, there'll be a break for dinner while our panel of judges decides the winners of each of our three prizes. Everything should be all wrapped so you can head home by 9PM. On the Friday and the Sunday of the competition, the venue will be Room 301 in UQ's Advanced Engineering Building (49-301). Saturday will be held in the ITEE Learning Centre in the General Purpose South building (78-217). Frequently Asked Questions: What's included in my UQCS Hackathon ticket?Hackathon entry, five meals, and a great experience What is a hackathon?A hackathon is a weekend of intensive development where developers, designers, and UXperts come together and (try to) produce some tech product (be it software or hardware) in time to present it at the end of the event. What do I bring?You only need to bring whatever tools you need to build something awesome Do I have to work in a team?No, you don't have to work in a team (we do recommend it though) What if I don't have an idea?That's totally fine! We'll have pitching of ideas on Friday night so you can try and find a team, or you might be inspired by a pitch and come up with something fantastic. What's the best type of project to build?Prize-wise we don't discriminate, but from past hackathons we've seen, web-based projects seem to be the easiest to get done in time. Rules To ensure we have a smooth running competition that's fair for everyone involved, we need a few rules: All resources used as part of the project (code, images, designs) must either be published before the start of the hackathon, or created after 6PM on Friday the 25th of August, 2017 Code must be in some form of version control. What's the CUA Hackathon? Check out the video from our inaugural event in 2016.  Have questions?  Attend our CUA Hackathon Public Information Night at River City Labs on Thursday, August 3rd.   The Challenge This year's Hackathon is centred around the theme Millennials: Tech, Trust, and Relationships.  The challenge is for participants to find innovative solutions to answer the following question:  How can CUA leverage technology to create trusted experiences and relationships that resonate with millennials? This is your chance to showcase your ideas over 48 hours of building, validating, and launching new digital products.  We are looking for a digitally-focused solution that aligns with CUA's purpose of 'members working together through life's changes for mutual good'.   We’ll also keep your stomachs satisfied and energy levels up throughout the weekend! What will you get out of it? You'll have the opportunity to use your interests, skills and creativity to develop an idea to assist CUA members with their financial, health and insurance needs.  There is range of fantastic prizes to win, including: a $5000 cash prize a mentoring session with entrepreneur and investor, Steve Baxter, from Channel Ten program, Shark Tank a $10,000 CXA Branding and Marketing support for the winning idea Prizes will also be awarded for: Most Innovative/ Creative Concept - $500 cash prize Best Traction/ Most Viable - $500 cash prize In addition, you’ll have the chance to add this experience to your portfolio, meet new people, learn new skills, and have lots of fun along the way!   How does it work? On the evening of 18 August, you'll meet other participants, pitch your idea, vote on your favourites, and then break into teams to begin working on the chosen idea. Over the following two days, you'll be working with your team to design, develop, validate, and pitch your idea. Along the way, you will be mentored by experts who will help you and your team reach your goal by the 4pm deadline on the final day (20 August). After tools down, your team will have the chance to pitch your idea, after which, a panel of judges will deliberate and choose the winning team.             The Code Network Winter Hackathon

            Code Network Winter is an annual event bringing together Software Developers, Roboticists, Designers, and other specialized individuals to create something awesome over a weekend and compete for prizes. We have no specific business agenda, so our event is agenda-less. Build the coolest stuff you can, your project will be judged based on how technically deep it is, how entrepreneurially successful it is, or simply how creatively cool it is. Everything is game. Who should come? Anyone! Most will be software developers / designers; we encourage everyone to come because often the coolest things are built when people with many different backgrounds come together. Invite your friends, there will be free food and drinks all weekend :-) How much does it cost? Attendence is free. Code Network is 100% volunteer run, and supported by amazing industry partners and grants.               What is Disrupting Law? Disrupting Law 2017 (4 August – 6 August) is a unique 54-hour hackathon / design jam for tertiary students focused on finding new opportunities in the legal industry. The event is an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with lawyers, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, management consultants and others from industry to practice creative problem solving, learn about the business and practice of law, and hone your pitching skills.   On Friday evening (4 August), all contestants will gather at QUT Gardens Point for an opening celebration and we will allocate student teams to law firms. Students and their law firm mentors will spend 54 hours designing an idea to “disrupt law”.  All teams will pitch to a panel of experienced judges and the public on Sunday night (6 August) for a range of opportunities, awards and prizes. We will provide you with food and drink for the entirety of the weekend.  As there will be alcohol on Friday night and Sunday night you must be at least 18 years of age to participate.   You must be available for the whole weekend, and while we will try to cater for your requests to join a team with friends,  part of the fun (and the challenge) is that we randomise teams so you meet new and interesting people with perspectives from other faculties. All tertiary students are welcome to participate, no matter their university or degree.  As you must hit the ground running, we particularly encourage those with law and technology backgrounds to apply (but an interest and a measure of enthusiasm will suffice!). Verge Young Entrepreneur Program challenges students to take on the role of a social entrepreneur to come up with an original, innovative solution to tackle some of the world’s most complex issues.  Over the course of a term, students explore marginalisation as a platform from which to look at disadvantage in their world. From this, students work with real life entrepreneurs, industry experts and external organisations to devise their own social enterprises which close the gap for a marginalised group in society. An innovative, project based learning unit; Verge involves over 300 Year 9 students across three Brisbane State High Schools. The MacGregor SHS Verge Young Entrepreneur Showcase Evening is the first of three showcases whereby students will share their enterprise ideas, and finalists will pitch 'Shark Tank' style to a panel of judges. The second Showcase and Shark Tank is to be held at Kedron State High School on Tuesday 1st August, 2017, and the final evening is at Brisbane State High School on Friday 11th August.  MacGregor State High School is thrilled to invite you to: Verge Young Entrepreneur Showcase Evening Friday 28th July, 2017 MacGregor State High School Hall Food Trucks and Coffee Van Available from 4:30pm- 6pm 5pm-6pm: Enterprise Displays Wander around our Gallery of Enterprises, and speak to the Verge Young Entrpreneurs themselves. Jan Owen AM CEO The Foundation for Young Australians Jan is a highly regarded social entrepreneur, innovator, influencer and author who has spent the past 25 years growing Australia's youth, social enterprise and innovation sectors. In 2012 she was named Australia's inaugural Australian Financial Review and Westpac Woman of Influence; in 2014 she received the Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) from the University of Sydney; and was awarded membership to the Order of Australia in 2000. She is the author of Every Childhood Lasts a Lifetime (1996) and The Future Chasers (2014). Jan is the CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians and YLab, the global youth futures lab. Her lifelong mission is to unleash the potential of young people to lead positive change in the world. 2. Nicole Gibson CEO Rogue & Rouge Foundation & Start Up Apprentice, National Mental Health Commissioner At 18 years old, Nicole established her Not-for-Profit, The Rogue and Rouge Foundation, and grew it to sustainability whilst also completing two National speaking tours. Nicole was a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year at 20 years old, and was listed as one of Australia’s Top 100 Most Influential Women at 21, shortly after taking out the Pride of Australia Medal. Thus far, Nicole has facilitated workshops and presentations with over a quarter of a million Australians. 3. Kaitlin Tait Co-Founder Spark* International, General Manager of Impact YGAP Kaitlin is the co-founder of Spark* International, and following a 2015 merger, is now the Global General Manager of Impact for YGAP. Her nine years of international development experience began with her leading a school for street-children in a Tanzania slum and managing an HIV orphanage in a Kenyan village, before launching Spark* and growing the model across Africa and the Asia Pacific. Kaitlin was the 2015 Foundation for Young Australians Trailblazer of the Year and speaks and works with entrepreneurs globally. Steve Williams Queensland Social Innovation Manager at Marist180 Over the course of the last ten years Steve has spoken at numerous conferences on social enterprise,appeared on national television, ABC Radio National, 612 ABC Brisbane Radio, and 4BC Radio, been featured in many newspaper articles on social enterprise and been responsible for three start-up's. He is the founder of Australia's first Homlessness Hackathon and Co-founder of Techfugees Brisbane. In 2016, his team was awarded the One to Watch Award at the Australian Social Enterprise awards for the scalability of M180 Painting Services, a social enterprise developed to create employment for young unemployed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In his previous role as Social Enterprise Director at Sandbag Inc, Steve led SEED PPM to be awarded small Australian Social Enterprise of the Year 2014 and he also co-founded the Queensland Social Enterprise Council. 5. Elizabeth Foster Learner, Educator, School Leader Ms Foster began her career as a Health and Physical Education teacher, and for the past 15 years has served in school leadership positions at Wellington Point State High School, Kelvin Grove State College, Stretton State College, Ferny Grove Stage High School.
