The GovHack Red Carpet Awards night is an event where we recognise GovHackers who have been judged as prizewinners in the National and International categories which they entered during the GovHack competition of that year. In addition to presenting the awards, we also aim to increase community and institutional awareness of open data and the hackathon community. Join us for a two-day workshop for startup community leaders and facilitators to share and learn skills, knowledge and best practice for organising, facilitating, and delivering startup-related events and programs.  From program design and delivery to venue selection, facilitation and presentation styles, through to stakeholder engagement and community building, this 2 day workshop is designed to build skill sets and knowledge for event and program facilitation and delivery. Day 1 - The focus of day one is on event facilitation, including bigger events such as Startup Weekends and Hackathons, through to smaller events such as demo days, panel events, and pitch competitions. Day 2 - Day two is focused on program facilitation and deep level insights into program design, including pre-accelerators, accelerators, and international missions. The workshop will be led by Aaron Birkby CEO, Startup Catalyst and one of Australia's hardest working Startup Weekend and Corporate Hackathon Facilitators and Peta Ellis CEO of River City Labs who has also facilitated multiple events, pre-accelerator programs.  Both are willing to share their tips, tricks and learnings for the benefit of future facilitators. Both are willing to share their tips tricks and learnings with the view of enabling more people to step into facilitation roles as the ecosystem grows and the demand for experienced event and program leaders grows.

The annnual UQCS Hackathon is on again. We're kicking off Friday with dinner and team forming, but if you're already in a team you're free to start hacking right away. Lunch and dinner on both days is on us so you can focus on producing something awesome in time for presentations on Sunday afternoon. After presentations, there'll be a break for dinner while our panel of judges decides the winners of each of our three prizes. Everything should be all wrapped so you can head home by 9PM. On the Friday and the Sunday of the competition, the venue will be Room 301 in UQ's Advanced Engineering Building (49-301). Saturday will be held in the ITEE Learning Centre in the General Purpose South building (78-217). What do I bring?You only need to bring whatever tools you need to build something awesome Do I have to work in a team?No, you don't have to work in a team (we do recommend it though) What if I don't have an idea?That's totally fine! We'll have pitching of ideas on Friday night so you can try and find a team, or you might be inspired by a pitch and come up with something fantastic. What's the best type of project to build?Prize-wise we don't discriminate, but from past hackathons we've seen, web-based projects seem to be the easiest to get done in time. Rules To ensure we have a smooth running competition that's fair for everyone involved, we need a few rules: All resources used as part of the project (code, images, designs) must either be published before the start of the hackathon, or created after 6PM on Friday the 25th of August, 2017 Code must be in some form of version control. This includes copying folders and changing their name to say 'MyProject v1'. What's the CUA Hackathon? This is your chance to showcase your ideas over 48 hours of building, validating, and launching new digital products.  We are looking for a digitally-focused solution that aligns with CUA's purpose of 'members working together through life's changes for mutual good'.   We’ll also keep your stomachs satisfied and energy levels up throughout the weekend! What will you get out of it? You'll have the opportunity to use your interests, skills and creativity to develop an idea to assist CUA members with their financial, health and insurance needs.  There is range of fantastic prizes to win, including: a $5000 cash prize a mentoring session with entrepreneur and investor, Steve Baxter, from Channel Ten program, Shark Tank a $10,000 CXA Branding and Marketing support for the winning idea Prizes will also be awarded for: Most Innovative/ Creative Concept - $500 cash prize Best Traction/ Most Viable - $500 cash prize In addition, you’ll have the chance to add this experience to your portfolio, meet new people, learn new skills, and have lots of fun along the way!   How does it work? On the evening of 18 August, you'll meet other participants, pitch your idea, vote on your favourites, and then break into teams to begin working on the chosen idea. Over the following two days, you'll be working with your team to design, develop, validate, and pitch your idea. Along the way, you will be mentored by experts who will help you and your team reach your goal by the 4pm deadline on the final day (20 August). After tools down, your team will have the chance to pitch your idea, after which, a panel of judges will deliberate and choose the winning team. Please keep in mind that in order to participate, you'll have to commit for the full 48 hours from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Code Network Winter is an annual event bringing together Software Developers, Roboticists, Designers, and other specialized individuals to create something awesome over a weekend and compete for prizes. We have no specific business agenda, so our event is agenda-less. Build the coolest stuff you can, your project will be judged based on how technically deep it is, how entrepreneurially successful it is, or simply how creatively cool it is. Everything is game. Who should come? Anyone! Most will be software developers / designers; we encourage everyone to come because often the coolest things are built when people with many different backgrounds come together. Invite your friends, there will be free food and drinks all weekend :-) How much does it cost? Attendence is free. Code Network is 100% volunteer run, and supported by amazing industry partners and grants. What is Disrupting Law? Disrupting Law 2017 (4 August – 6 August) is a unique 54-hour hackathon / design jam for tertiary students focused on finding new opportunities in the legal industry. The event is an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with lawyers, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, management consultants and others from industry to practice creative problem solving, learn about the business and practice of law, and hone your pitching skills.   On Friday evening (4 August), all contestants will gather at QUT Gardens Point for an opening celebration and we will allocate student teams to law firms. Students and their law firm mentors will spend 54 hours designing an idea to “disrupt law”.  All teams will pitch to a panel of experienced judges and the public on Sunday night (6 August) for a range of opportunities, awards and prizes. We will provide you with food and drink for the entirety of the weekend.  As there will be alcohol on Friday night and Sunday night you must be at least 18 years of age to participate.   You must be available for the whole weekend, and while we will try to cater for your requests to join a team with friends,  part of the fun (and the challenge) is that we randomise teams so you meet new and interesting people with perspectives from other faculties. All tertiary students are welcome to participate, no matter their university or degree.  As you must hit the ground running, we particularly encourage those with law and technology backgrounds to apply (but an interest and a measure of enthusiasm will suffice!).
