Hoist is a tech club for teens interested in coding, design or entrepreneurship. If you’re between the ages of 12-19 and have an interest in startups, tech or coding, then come check it out! Don't forget to bring your laptop and charger. If you do not own a laptop we have a limited number available for use! Hoist is normally held on the third Saturday of every month.

Atlantic Lottery Hackathon 007: Space Lottery

In this Hackathon, your challenge is to create innovative, fun, fresh ideas for lottery or other real money gaming in new SPACES!
Atlantic Lottery Corporation offers a range of lottery games to residents of Atlantic Canada. Players can buy a scratch ticket at a retail store or have it delivered to their home; they can purchase a jackpot ticket in person or through ALC’s Android/iOS app; and they can play instant lottery games online.
Challenge:
In this Hackathon, your challenge is to create innovative, fun, fresh ideas for lottery or other real money gaming in new SPACES: ie. a place it isn’t already.
Tesla got a car into space, how can we get lottery into space… What would that look like?
Or maybe you have a wearable/AR/VR Lottery experience in mind… How would that work?
Or any number of other ideas! All ideas are welcome!
This week-long hackathon will begin Thursday, July 12, 2018 (5:30pm- 8:30pm) with an introduction to our current product portfolio, challenges, and opportunities. This is your chance to build a team and ask questions as you start exploring ideas. After a week of behind the scenes work as a team, the pitching event will begin at 5:30pm Thursday, July 19, 2018. This hackathon allows you and your team to work at your own pace throughout the week, to explore new methods, and/or new spaces, in which to engage lottery players. This is a fantastic way to show off your design, programming, or other talents. Not to mention, up to $5000 in prizes!!!
The Prizes:
First prize: $1500 (!!!)
Second prize: $900
Third prize: $600
Most Innovative: $500
PLUS!! After the event, the top 3 teams’ solutions will be brought forward for secondary evaluation by the Atlantic Lottery Customer Panel. Up to 500 people will review each idea. The top three teams’ ideas will be brought forward to the ALC Customer Panel after the event. Idea(s) that are scored 3.5 or higher by the Panel will unlock a bonus $500 prize. That’s up to $1500 in bonus prizes available!!!
Pitching:
Each team will have 3 minutes maximum to pitch their idea and 2 minutes maximum for Q&A with the judges.
Judging:
Projects will be judged on presentation, impressiveness, completeness, and, of course, innovation, which is the degree to which an idea has design desirability, technological feasibility, and business viability! Teams will be ranked by total score, with the top three teams winning monetary prizes. There is an extra prize for the most innovative idea.
After the Hackathon:
The top three teams’ ideas will be brought forward to the ALC Customer Panel. Idea(s) that are scored 3.5 or higher overall by the Panel will unlock a bonus $500 prize.
Teams/Participants:
You can go solo, or work in a team. All teams must be confirmed by 9pm Thursday, July 12, 2018. Please review Terms and Conditions for full details.
Note: This event is 19+.
Schedule:
Thursday, July 12: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. to have some food and drinks, and to meet and mingle with your fellow hackers. The hackathon will kick off at 6pm.
Thursday, July 19: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Presentations and judging will begin at 6pm, followed by an awards presentation!
What's the food situation:
Food and drinks will be provided on both Thursdays, including pizza, pop, juice, water, snacks, Redbull - all the fuel you’ll need!
If you have allergies or food sensitivities, please let us know in advance so that we can make accommodations.
**IMPORTANT:
The Competition is only open to legal residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island who are 19 years of age or older as of the date of entry.

Employment and Social Development Canada Hackathon

In the spirit of collaboration and innovation, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has partnered with Saint Mary’s University’s Master of Science in Computing and Data Analytics program to host a hackathon. The hackathon will take place May 4-6; and will have a theme of improving service delivery, with an emphasis on people living in poverty.
The mission of Employment and Social Development Canada, including the Labour Program and Service Canada, is to build a stronger and more inclusive Canada, to support Canadians in helping them live productive and rewarding lives and improving Canadians' quality of life. However, the needs of Canadians are changing, and in order for ESDC to meet its objectives, the department must continue to evolve and innovate how it delivers services to Canadians. In order to understand where the service delivery gaps are, ESDC has partnered with Saint Mary’s University’s on this hackathon, to gather new ideas and build on our diversity and expertise to help improve services for Canadians living in poverty.
We are seeking social entrepreneurs with a passion for computing science, data analytics, statistics, business, design, and innovation to help improve service delivery, create new innovations, and solve complex problems.

March Topic: Virtual Reality
Join Hoist Halifax for an exciting meetup in March. We will be bringing in Halifax VR for a lesson on virtual reality! Learn about all that VR has to offer, the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur in the virtual reality space and the latest industry developments. After a classroom style session, get the chance to practice your virtual reality skills with some playing time. For this session we have limited space available. If you're unable to come, please cancel your ticket ahead of time.
