Dr. Shin’Ichiro Matsuo:  Dr. Matsuo is Professor of Research at Georgetown University, Advisor on Financial Cryptography to the Director of the MIT Media Lab, and a Research Follow at Keio University in Tokyo.  His area of research is in cryptography and information security. He has made extensive contributions to technology standards: as an editor of three ISO/IEC standards on cryptographic protocols (Anonymous entity authentication ISO/IEC2009-2, secret sharing (ISO/IEC19592-1) and Verification of Cryptographic Protocols(ISO/IEC29128)), and contributed to IETF standardization of TLS1.3 on the security evaluation. He also founded an international consortium on security evaluation of cryptographic protocols, so called "CELLOS"​ consortium. US, UK, Estonian, French, and Japanese universities, research institutes, company and individuals participate this consortium. He has proposed a new hash specification suitable for real information systems, which was presented at 2nd cryptographic hash workshop held by NIST. He is providing academic contributions to emerging “Blockchain” technology by constructing BSafe.network, an international academic neutral research test network for blockchain technology, which has a similar role as NSFNet for the Internet development. The University of British Columbia is a participant in this network.   Dr. Angela Walch:  Angela Walch is an Associate Professor at St. Mary’s University School of Law. Her research focuses on money and the law, blockchain technologies, governance of emerging technologies and financial stability. She is a Research Fellow of the Centre for Blockchain Technologies of University College London. She has presented her research at Harvard Law School, University College London and with the Modern Money Network at Columbia Law School, among others. Her work on blockchain technologies has appeared in the NYU Journal of Legislation & Public Policy and in American Banker. Walch was nominated for “Blockchain Person of the Year” for 2016 by Crypto Coins News for her work on the governance of blockchain technologies and her influential article in American Banker arguing that the coders and miners of public blockchains should be treated as fiduciaries. Prior to joining the faculty at St. Mary’s, Walch practiced corporate law at the firm of Ropes & Gray in Boston, for which her practice included venture capital, life sciences and emerging companies work. After Ropes & Gray, she served as an attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at Harvard University. While at Harvard, she advised on general transactional matters and federal grants for international projects. Walch also practiced transactional law in London, where she worked in-house for Sainsbury’s (a large British supermarket chain) and served as general counsel for Brand Events, a venture-backed consumer events company that produced premier events (Taste of London, Top Gear Live) around the world.   Michael Graglia:  Michael Graglia is the director of the Future of Property Rights initiative at New America. Graglia comes from a career in international development and strategy that has seen him in finance at the Gates Foundation, program evaluation at BCG, developing a global tertiary education network at the World Bank Group, managing a national refugee program for the International Catholic Migration Commission in Zimbabwe, and teaching math in Peace Corps Namibia where he founded a scholarship program to fund women's education. Graglia has an MBA from Columbia University where he was a Bronfman Fellow, an MA in Southeast Asian studies from Johns Hopkins SAIS where his studies were supported by the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Graglia studied mathematics and computer science at Gonzaga University, S.J.   Bob Summerwill:  Bob Summerwill is a community leader for the Ethereum Project, serving as Enterprise Ethereum's lead architect and a member of ConsenSys, Community Ambassador for the Sweetbridge Project and an advisor to Varro Technologies, and a founding member of the Ethereum Enteprise Alliance, established to create open standards and protocols for the Ethereum blockchain network.  He first met Vitalik Buterin in 2014 and has been actively involved in the Ethereum project since 2015.  He has been building bridges to enterprise and towards mainstream adoption since 2016. Originally from the UK, he has lived in Vancouver since 2003, and is now a dual citizen of Canada and the UK.   Mark Bell:  Mark Bell is a Digital Researcher at The UK National Archives. Previous to this role, Mark has over 20 years of experience working with database technologies in industries such as telecoms and banking, as well as in government. At The National Archives Mark led the research for the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project, ‘Traces through Time’, tackling the challenges of identifying individuals in historical documents. His research interests include dealing with uncertainty in data, automated text recognition, and Distributed Ledger Technology, and he is TNA’s lead researcher on their Archangel project, which explores the long-term sustainability of digital archives though the design, development and trialling of transformational new distributed ledger technology (DLT) to promote accessibility and ensure integrity of content, whilst maximizing its impact through novel business models for commodification and open access.

What is this about?: Decentralized application developers have been using database backends that have been hosted in the cloud and have not truly been fulfilling the unique demands and needs of decentralized applications. Bluzelle is just that – an on-demand, reliable, scalable and fast decentralized database that dynamically supports your applications. Wherever your applications need the data to be now and tomorrow. And to whatever scale needed. In her studies, she has developed a wide breadth of knowledge and a deeper focus on algorithms, data structures, and parallel/distributed systems. Her professional experience includes ground support for NASA's Jason-3 satellite and two summers at Amazon: one working on vehicle routing and one digesting massive volumes of latency data to draw human insights about the performance of Amazon.com. As a graduate student, her research was on developing performant concurrent authenticated data structures. Bash is used as the default login shell for most Linux distributions and Apple’s MacOS. Since then, he has developed the first online banking software in the US for Wells Fargo as well as an open source election system. Charles Krempeaux has held titles such as CTO, Director of Engineering, Director of Technology, Engineering Manager, Principal Software Engineer, and Chief Architect. He has built 6 companies in his career and helped 5 others build theirs. He has been involved in open source projects since 1996 and has co-authored “The Mono Handbook” book as well contributing to the mono project itself. He is one of the 4 original senior members of the Hootsuite engineering team. As well as having done work for Electronic Arts (EA), and had a startup acquired by Microsoft, and later sold to Facebook. Through his illustrious career, he has gathered a wealth of knowledge in and around the area of Software Engineering, Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Management, Entrepreneurialism, Product Development, and Software Architecture. Colin Charles was on the founding team of MariaDB, having to growth hack its user-base from constant evangelism almost singlehandedly. He cares deeply about infrastructure software, from Linux, databases and scaling web infrastructure. He was also an early employee at MySQL (till its exit to Sun Microsystems). He is knowledgable about data stores, and strategises about community evangelism, developer relations and remote working. In past lives, he also served on FESCO for The Fedora Project and also hacked on OpenOffice.org. Neeraj Murarka is a software engineer and computer systems architect with over 20 years expertise in cutting edge technology. He has worked on projects for Google, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Lufthansa, Thales Avionics, and Zynga. Some of Neeraj's largest projects include: locking down of modi ed Android OS for retail markets; multicast UDP satellite-based music streaming systems, mobile app for blockchain startup "Zeroblock"; design and development of secure and FFA-approved systems for Airbus and Boeing commercial aircraft. Ryan Fugger, the original creator of Ripple who designed and implemented a multi-hop payment network into several online communities. It was then sold to Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb who implemented the concept on top of their consensus ledger transaction system. The Hackathon is governed by this Hackathon Participation Agreement (“Agreement”). By entering the Hackathon, you (“Participant”) agree to abide by the Agreement which is a binding legal agreement between Participant and Bluzelle with respect to the Hackathon. Participation in the Hackathon Participant must be at least 18 years of age and be present at the hackathon with their team for the duration of the hackathon. In addition to the Agreement, Participant agrees to abide by SFU Venture Lab’s Code of Conduct and additional documents, if any, provided in connection with the Hackathon (collectively “Additional Documents”). Bluzelle has the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any Participant for breach of the Agreement or Additional Documents. Bluzelle has the right to cancel or suspend the Hackathon with or without notice and for any or no reason. Bluzelle is not responsible for any damage or inconvenience caused by a cancellation or suspension of the Hackathon. Teams Participants can work as an individual (team of one) or in groups of two to six Participants (each group of 1-6 Participants is a “Team”). Submission Teams of Participants are expected to provide submissions leveraging Distributed Database Technology. While suggested areas relate to how this new database solution can be used to host globally distributed data, teams of Participants are not restricted to this area. Team submissions can range from a high level presentation via slides (e.g. Powerpoint, Keynote Google Slides), to a rudimentary application demonstrating their initiative. By providing a submission in the Hackathon, each Participant represents and warrants that the submission does not violate any applicable law or any third party intellectual property rights. Judging The Hackathon winners will be chosen from the teams of Participants by a panel of judges selected by Bluzelle. The judges’ decisions are final, binding and uncontestable. Judgment will be based on: (i) Utilization of the Distributed Database Technology into the solution (10%) (ii) Leveraging the blockchain concepts inherent in the technology (15%) (iii) Leveraging the Swarm, or Peer to Peer, concepts inherent in the technology (15%) (iv) Identifying a real-world problem (30%) (v) Suggesting an innovative approach to solving the real world problem in (iv) (30%) A total of three winning Entries will be chosen on the above criteria, for which the hardware wallets and crypto will be given as prizes. Prizes The prizes will be divided evenly amongst Participant team members unless otherwise noted. Bluzelle reserves the right not to award a prize in the event of an insufficient number of eligible entries meeting the minimum judging criteria as determined in Bluzelle’s sole discretion. Bluzelle is not responsible for any dispute among teams or team Participants related to prizes. Publicity and Privacy Participant understands that the Hackathon may be photographed, videotaped, recorded, live streamed, etc. and hereby grants Bluzelle and/or SFU Venture Labs the right to use or refrain from using Participant’s name and/or likeness any and all footage about Participant’s participation in the Hackathon and Participant’s Hackathon submission in any manner or media that Bluzelle and/or SFU Venture Labs sees fit without Participant’s review or approval and without compensation. By participating in the Hackathon, Participants agree that their personal data provided as part of the Hackathon may be used for the purposes of the Hackathon. Licensing and Intellectual Property Rights Bluzelle does not claim any license or any intellectual property rights in Participant’s submission, except for the limited license to review the submission as part of Hackathon judging and awarding of prizes. Software produced should be licensed in a permissive fashion. Approved licenses include the MIT License, new BSD License (preferred), or the Apache license. Governing Law and Severability This Agreement and the Hackathon will be governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable therein and the courts of British Columbia will have sole jurisdiction over any disputes relating to this Agreement.

Holochain is a breakthrough in the scalability of distributed computing that allows you to run Facebook scale applications on a decentralized architecture. Holochain dapps are held completely by their users in a peer-2-peer network. Users are directly connected in a data commons with no centralised server or cloud processing data between them. Holochain is currently in Alpha with a number of prototype apps available to play with. This weekend is an opportunity to come get started on building your own! The conference gives the hockey analytics community a means to show new ways to think about the sport we all love. VanHAC is organized by the community for the community. Our main goal is to strengthen the hockey analytics community by providing more opportunities to share knowledge and ideas, encouraging support and education for speaking at conferences, and increasing the visibility of developers, organizations, and companies within the community. This year will be our first ever 3 day Conference.  Friday will include social activities, Saturday/Sunday will be full of talks, tutorials, keynotes, hackathon and more.  Your ticket helps us cover the costs of venues, as well as coffee and snacks for you.  We aim to make zero profit on this event.  Should we have any leftover money we will donate it to a local charity.

                Welcome to the 2nd annual Hack Our City! New Westminster hosts Innovation Week Feb 23-Mar 3, and a highlight event is the Hack-a-thon, sponsored by Amazon and TransLink. We invite teams of 1-4 people to compete in transportation-themed apps and projects for prizes. This year's hack-a-thon takes place February 24th and 25th, 2018, from 9am to 5pm both days.  Location: This year's hack-a-thon takes place at Douglas College's New Westminster campus, in the atrium and "fishbowl" on the main level. Douglas College is easily accessible by transit, and pay parking is also available. The location is fully accessible, though wheelchair users should enter via Royal Avenue where there are ramps.  Mentors:  Mentors from various sectors will be on hand to help you on both days with your apps and projects. We are grateful to Amazon, TransLink, and Douglas College for providing some of the mentors, and to community volunteers for their time to help guide the hackers.  Lottery Registration: Due to demand demonstrated last year, we are accepting online registrations for the hack-a-thon until February 5th, but if required, participants will be drawn by lottery to determine who will be invited to hack as the room and resources only has so much capacity. Registration for this Eventbrite event does not guarantee a spot, and you will be refunded completely if your team is not drawn. If capacity is not exceeded, there won't be a need for the lottery and all participants will be confirmed February 5th.  Once confirmed, participants will be supplied with more details about the hack such as open data sources you can access, the themes the judges will be looking for, and judging criteria.  Once confirmed, refunds will not be given.  About Your Team: Maybe you work together, or maybe you're all in the same class? Or perhaps you're just a group of friends who like to code together. Who is on your team is up to you, but each team should register on one Eventbrite order with a ticket for each team member. Teams can be 1-4 people. Each person is $15 (plus Eventbrite fees) - this covers your snacks and lunch fees for both days, which is pizza one day, sandwiches the other, so please let us know in the form if you have dietary restrictions. There will be access to coffee and tea. Although beginners will be welcome, you should have some understanding of what a hack-a-thon is - what the goal is, how to use open data, and how to build an app. You are responsible for all of your own equipment, cords, and other gear needed. Power outlets are available, but you probably can't be plugged in the whole time. Wifi is free and accessible. There are tables and chairs and some couches in the space.  Workshops:  New this year, we are also offering two optional workshops for teams to take advantage of as they work on their projects. On day one you may attend a 30 minute workshop on privacy considerations and constraints by Cindy Oxenbury from Canopy Privacy. Cindy will also be on hand to answer questions during the hack. On day two, hackers may opt to attend a workshop given by Steve Kim, from VANTEC Angel Network on how to professionally present your app or project to the judge panel, ranging from how to speak into a microphone, to how to quickly communicate the benefits to your project.  Schedule:  Day One:  9am - welcome 930am - optional privacy workshop with Cindy Oxenbury from Canopy Privacy 12pm - Lunch available 5pm - venue closes for the day. Take all your stuff home!  Day Two: 9am - venue open 930am - workshop on presentation skills with Steve Kim from VANTEC Network 12pm - Lunch available 3pm - Hacking is done 3pm to 3:30pm - Stretch your legs and grab a snack to power up 3:30pm - presentations begin 4:30pm (approximately) - Judge panel deliberations and awards presentation Prizes:  Winning Team: $750 + aim mentor package prize from TerraTap Technologies, valued at $4,000 Second Place: $350 Third Place: $250 Best Presentation: $150 What is theTerraTap Technologies  aim mentor package prize?
