World-Class Investing, Engineering and Hackathons
26 Sep - 05:30 PM
Vancouver, Canada
"No one, VC or angel, has invested in more of the top startups than Ron Conway. He knows what happened in every deal in the Valley, half the time because he arranged it." –Paul Graham on The Ronco Principle
SV Angel is a San Francisco-based investment firm that is widely regarded as one of the most successful angel investing firms of all time. Kartik Talwar joined SV Angel in 2014 as an Insight Engineer while studying Astrophysics at the University of Waterloo. At SV Angel, Kartik ultimately built internal tools to track all investments, deals, financing, requests and relationships across 500 investments made and thousands considered ever year.
How did they evaluate thousands of the top investment opportunities? How did they invest in the earliest rounds of Google, PayPal, Airbnb, Pinterest, Twitter, SnapChat, Square and other titans?
What is it like evaluating and investing in cutting edge tech? What does it take to launch a global engineering and education initiative like ETHGlobal and Hack the North? How are great teams and ideas brought to life? What does engineering excellence and the world's top talent look like in the heart of American tech culture?
Kartik Talwar, now a General Partner at A.Capital focused on crypto and Advisor at SV Angel, will walk us through these questions, his transition from an engineer to an investor, and more in our next Terminal Tech Talk.
Hors d'oeuvres, drinks and a great discussion will be served on September 26th at 5:30PM PST.
Of course, as always, all are welcome!
FORMAT:
5:30PM – VIPs and guests arrive
5:30PM – Drinks & hors d'oeuvres
6:00PM – Fireside chat begins
7:00PM – Event wraps up
About the speaker Kartik Talwar:
Kartik Talwar graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Physics but before he did, he wrote an API for the university. Kartik also co-founded Hack The North where he oversaw and planned the execution of Canada’s largest hackathon and arguably the best hackathon in the world.
In 2016, Kartik rejoined SV Angel where he tackled a portfolio of more than 500 companies by building internal tools to track all investments, deals, financing, requests and relationships. The tools now help manage the thousands of investments SV Angel considers annually. As an investor, Kartik led SV Angel's efforts in the cryptocurrency and blockchain spaces.
Kartik is also co-founder ETHGlobal, the world's largest ethereum hackathon network. In the past two years, Kartik planned, oversaw and executed world-class ETHGlobal events in Singapore, Paris, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Bangalore, Cape Town, New York, Waterloo, Denver and, of course, San Francisco. The global roadshow continues and is responsible for onboarding thousands of developers into the Ethereum ecosystem.
Kartik also helped source, promote and lead investments in MakerDAO, Dfinity, Handshake and blockchain-based video game Cryptokitties, which exploded in popularity last year and has already hosted millions of transactions. The CryptoKitties concept was first prototyped at ETHWaterloo, the first ETHGlobal event. Kartik is also a Software Mentor at Velocity, the world's largest and most productive free accelerator.
Kartik is the author of numerous open souce projects on his GitHub page.
In 2019, Kartik was named Forbes 30 Under 30 in Venture Capital.

Connecting people. Empowering the community. Celebrating success.
Vancouver Startup Week (VSW) is a week-long celebration that builds momentum and fosters connections among entrepreneurs, investors, leaders, and friends within the Greater Vancouver startup community.
VSW is run by a team of passionate and dedicated volunteers, each of whom come from the startup ecosystem in Vancouver, and beyond.
Five years and running, Vancouver Startup Week has become a globally recognized brand supported by great companies, civic leaders, educators, business pioneers, and more.
In 2018 we brought together more than 2,000 people at 108 events, including investor showcases, panel discussions, office visits, and networking events. Vancouver Startup Week events are not organized by one central body, but instead by dozens of amazing community partners which in turn are supported by the non-profit Vancouver Startup Society. We strive to have as many events as possible accessible under one centralized, All Access Ticket, helping participants enjoy the benefits of Vancouver Startup Week with minimal logistical hassle.
Our 2019 edition of VSW will take place from September 13 to 20, 2019, kicking off with our Vanhacks Hackathon, and leading into an action-packed week of events.
Join us in celebrating Vancouver’s startup community!

Girls in Tech Vancouver Hacking for Humanity Hackathon 2019
04 May - 10:00 AM
Vancouver, Canada
Hello Vancouver! Join us for the 2nd annual Girls in Tech Vancouver Hacking for Humanity Hackathon. This hackathon will take place at DevHub, located in beautiful downtown Vancouver, from May 4 - 5, 2019. Expect prizes, food, speaking engagements, and most importantly - lots of fun!
What is Hacking for Humanity?
Hacking for Humanity is a 2-day code-a-thon where developers, designers, scientists, students, entrepreneurs, educators, and mentors work together to build apps that solve social problems. We believe that when communities work together, they don't just do good, they become a force for global change. As an organization founded on inclusivity and equality, we invite all women, men, and nonbinary, gender-fluid, genderqueer++ to participate and collaborate!
The hackathon is part of a global series by Girls in Tech that takes place throughout the year in various cities around the world. Each chapter partners with Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) to solve social problems local to their community.
Get hands-on experience, make friends, network, and be part of a global community - starting here in Vancouver!
How is the Girls in Tech Hackathon different than other Hackathons?
Hacking for Humanity is NOT your typical 24-hour hackathon. This year, we are partnering with Minerva BC to present our theme. Although this is a female-focused hackathon, participants of all genders (and non-identifying genders) are encouraged to join! We encourage diverse groups to come together and create amazing projects! Mentorship from industry professionals will be available during the hackathon, as well as amazing prizes for our winners! This event is held over 2 days but you get to go home for a good night's rest after day 1 of hacking. You can return on day 2 refreshed and ready to polish your project for presenting and judging. We have found that this format is more female-inclusive because nobody feels pressured to sleep over or lose sleep over a hackathon.
Partnering Non-Profit Organization
We are partnering with Minerva BC who will be presenting how their organization supports equality for women. Minerva BC is a non-profit charitable organization that supports women and girls throughout the province to gain the confidence and skills they need to reach their leadership potential.
Who Is Invited?
We encourage everyone (ages 18+) with a minimum of 3 months of coding experience to join! (Experience with some coding and setting up your coding environment is strongly recommended.) The best innovations are made by diverse groups. All we ask is to have at least one female in your group. Feel free to come with a group or join on your own - Girls in Tech will help you find a group if needed! Don't be afraid to come out, make friends, and innovate.

FAQs
What is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is a design and coding event where computer programmers, graphic designers, UI/UX designers, project managers, and other domain experts come together and collaborate intensively on a project. Hackathons may have a specific area of focus, which can include programming languages used, the operating system, an application, an API, or a challenge question. The goal of a hackathon is to create a usable software application where teams will have a proof-of-concept (POC) or a minimum-viable-product (MVP) to present at the end of the competition.
Teams are usually composed of 4 people where teams have to come up with a new concept, not a project previously worked on before. The winning teams are chosen by a panel of industry professional judges and prizes are awarded to the winning team.
How do I sign up as a team?
Ticket holders will receive a Google form prior to the event to list out their team preferences and other information. Just make sure everyone on your team purchased their ticket and we'll make sure you get to work together! Keep in mind the team size is 4 persons and we will be randomly assigning participants to teams that have less than four.
I don't have a team. Can I come alone?
Yes! We highly encourage everyone to participate in our event. Our goal is to create an inclusive community here in Vancouver. We will be assigning teams randomly so you will get a chance to work with new individuals and make friends!
