Dublin, Ireland
The CoderDojo Foundation recently relaunched Zen as a new open source community platform! We are hosting a Coding hackathon to show you how to contribute to this opensource community platform!
About Zen
This new system allows CoderDojo community members (Mentors and Champions) to fully manage their Dojo activities like issuing tickets to individual Dojo events, posting in forums, editing and setting up profiles etc. The system is completely open source.
Below are some of the really cool community features:
- A forum for community members - A forum especially for youths over 13 years of age - An improved Dojo listing where you can book tickets to a Dojo event - Profiles for individual community members where you can showcase your skills and the Dojo you belong to
We're using some cutting edge open source technology for the system:
- NodeJS - AngularJS - PostGreSQL - Mozilla Open Badges - Jenkins
About the hackathon
If you're interested in developing for this open source project please come along to our Hackathon in the Dropbox offices, in Dublin! On the day there will be 2 streams, a coding stream and a translation stream.
Coding Stream
We will cover how to get set up for development and open your first pull request! Don't worry about having / not having lots of experience, we will have experienced developers present to help you, and we have a list of issues that are "suitable for beginners"!
This is an ideal opportunity to:
- Showcase your development skills on an open source repository. Employers love to see open source activity on Github so it is an easy way to prove your skills.
- Learn from experienced developers in the tech industry. The system was developed by a leading NodeJS development house, NearForm
- Learn how the peer coding reviews and deployment processes work in a real world scenario.
Translating Stream
We are also looking for people to help us translate the community platform. If you are fluent in any forgien language we would love your help on the day. We are using Crowdin to translate the community platform. More details about helping translate on the day can be found here.
This is an ideal opportunity to:
- Showcase your language skills
- Contribute to a open source community project that impacts youth all around the world!
What you will need:
Your Own Laptop and charger
You don't need to be an expert, but you will need to be familiar with javascript.

The Atmosphere
Hackathons are full of energy because they offer a chance to engage in the thrilling challenge of rapidly brainstorming, validating and prototyping new ideas. You’ll meet smart, creative people and stretch your brain making amazing things together. There will be delicious food & drink, fun hardware prizes, and great opportuntities to meet with technical mentors and other developers interested in augmented reality hardware and software.
The Experience
As a participant, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from expert presentations, pitch ideas, form teams, get support from expert mentors, and immediately put to work the new SDKs, functions, and APIs you’ve learned. Each team will have a dedicated DAQRI mentor to help connect you with the right resources, as well as listen to your feedback about and ideas about how to improve the developer experience.
Senior DAQRI technical leadership will be in attendance and looking for great developers, designers, sales leaders, and industrial experts interested in job opportunities in the augmented reality space.
Ground Rules
You don’t need to attend with a team – in fact we expect that most people will meet and form teams the day of the event. Teams should be made up of 6 people or less.
To make it fair to everyone, pre-formed teams that do plan to attend together must register as a group ahead of time. There will be a dedicated section of the competition with separate prizes for this group.
Entries will be submitted for consideration through your team’s presentation on the final day of the Hackathon. Judges will also be walking around during throughout the event and you are encouraged to tell them about your project.
Entries will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Value and utility of the chosen use case
Potential for real-world implementation and adoption
Originality in concept and approach
Completeness of prototype/mockup/demo
Come prepared to learn, collaborate, and have fun!

Environmental conditions in a built environment can impact people's performance and social perceptions. How can early warning systems be used to mitigate environmental risks?
If you could track and trace everyone who comes into a park or forest for recreation purposes, what mobile app would you create so the park owners could understand their customers behaviours and deliver an amazing experience?
Imagine an agrarian based community where every field is monitored with sensors for water, sunshine, rainfall, wind and soil data. With learning and predictive software, what gains can be made in the choice of crops or trees that are suitable for the soil now, as it will be and how rotation patterns can be positively changed?
What if you could locate and track people and objects within an educational institute. What sort of innovative applications or solutions would you suggest that could directly impact students and faculty collaboration and productivity?
Receive free access to Bluemix, the new cloud application development tool from IBM. Learn how to turn your idea into a reality. Gain some great experience with real issues that you can wow your future employers with. Win some cool stuff.

See https://coderdojo.com/.
What is CodingGrace?
Coding Grace are a group of developers based in Ireland who love to code and do other geeky and not necessarily crafty activities. Some of us code full-time, or just for fun (or both). We have people who are part of other technical user groups such as Dublin ALT.NET, GameCraft, Python Ireland, Ruby Ireland and more, We provide female-friendly workshops and events in an environment for developers and aspiring developers mentored by diverse instructors from the industry. See codinggrace.com for more details. See https://codinggrace.com/.
What is Girls Hack Ireland?
Girls Hack Ireland is a program developed by The Insight Centre for Data Analytics (@insight_centre) with the aim of generating knowledge & interest among younger girls to pursue the academic disciplines of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects through creative, interactive learning. See https://www.insight-centre.org/node/134518.
TOG Dublin
TOG is a hackerspace based in the centre of Dublin, Ireland. It is a shared space where members have a place to be creative and work on their projects in an environment that is both inspiring and supportive of both new and old technologies. See http://www.tog.ie/
