AUG Nairobi: ShipIt "AUG Hackathon".
13 Aug - 07:00 PM
Nairobi, Kenya
Official AUG Nairobi RSVP Link
What is ShipIt?
Every quarter, Atlassian runs a 24-hour hackathon called ShipIt where they drop everything to make something awesome. It embodies their culture of innovation and puts weight behind a sacred company value: “Be the change you seek.”
What is ShipIt AUG Style?
Ideally, we would like your expertise to help improve anything related to the Atlassian community, Atlassian tools, but if you're passionate about something else (Addon/plugin/extension/bot) we encourage you to work on that. (Note: your solution doesn't have to be technical)
ShipIt is a team activity, this is your chance to combine ideas and skill sets with leaders from all over the country.
Traditionally, this is a 24-hour event. But you will get to start early and start your project. You and your team will have 2 weeks (14th July to 30th July) to work remotely on your project. You will record a video submission and send it in for judging (Before 30th of July).
Process
Pre-AUG ShipIt:
Assemble your team! Now is the time to start thinking about your ideas and who you want to work with. We have created a Stride room and Confluence space for you to post ideas and/or to sign on for a project. If you're not attending the meetup, no worries. There will be a two-hour working session. You can either stride or start helping your team during the remote phase. Brainstorming and collaborating is encouraged but no actual work can be done on the project until August 3. We will check in with you before AUG to make sure you have everything you need for the 4 hour-long working session.
AUG ShipIt:
Day of ShipIt (2-8pm on August 3rd during AUG ShipIt)
Haven't joined a team? Have a great idea the day of? You will have a few minutes to pitch your idea or to join a team that you think you can collaborate with. Get to work and have fun! Once the planning time ends, you can decide next steps with your team to ensure you're good to go.
You will have until August 3rd by end of day EAT to complete your project. Your team needs to have a 3-minute video sent to the Community Team describing your project. There will be 1 winner, the overall ShipIt winner that'll be judged by a group of AUG Members in attendance.
Note: Participants would be welcome to request free trials of our products that may help them from aug.atlassian.com

E-Waste Mini Conference
05 Jun - 08:30 AM
, Kenya
On Tuesday 5th June, 2018 Nikola Energy and Squadra 1 will be commemorating the celebration of the environment by hosting an event that will have the following activities: -
Mini-Conference: - Where the main players in the E-Waste field will share their how tos | what is working |what isn’t working | perspective on the way forward. The Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, The Ministry of ICT, NEMA, Nairobi County, UNESCO, The Finnish Embasy, The Finnish Centre Party, WEEE, several private and public universities to name but a few who will be participating on the day. Corporate sponsors will also have opportunity to share their thoughts on the topic.
E-Waste Flea Market: - On the day, offer Kenyans the opportunity to batter or sell their no longer fit for purpose e-materials. This will allow those that have e-materials pilling up in their homes, an avenue to make a little money and hopefully get items that they are in need of.
Design Thinking (DT) Session with High-Schoolers: - Involve the youth, through design thinking, in ideating the best way forward for Kenya. This campaign will precede E-Day. The three best solutions identified from this process will present their ideas on the day. Facilitating the DT sessions will be Nikola Energy, Squadra 1, Mekatilili, Nairobi Design Week, Kijiji, and Mideva.
Hackathon: - Facilitate a Hackathon session the weekend before E-Day with E-Waste as the theme. Interested University Students can sign-up to participate for this.
Photo Competition Campaign: - 3 Weeks leading up to E-Day we can have a competition involving >= 18 years showing off the E-Waste that they intend to drop off on the day.
Communicate Locations of Collection Points: - Share information on where the mwananchi can deposit their E-Waste and future flea market opportunities
Our motivation for facilitating this event are as follows: -
Kenya produces 20,000 Tons of E-Waste a year and yet only 1% is responsibly repurposed
There is an increased dependency on technology, especially Mobile Tech and yet there is a high rate of re-purchase, with the mwananchi getting a new phone/mobile gadget every two year
Establish simple directive on where one can take E-Waste, thus proffering an avenue through which the mwananchi can purposely consider segregation of their trash. Especially because of the adverse effects on the environment and human health due to poor handling of E-Waste
Start cultivating a new Kenyan culture that promotes Re-Duce | Re-Use | Re-Cycle | Re-Purpose such that the mwananchi is already playing their role in support of the E-Waste Draft Bill that is yet to be passed by the Kenyan Government.

Nairobi Global Game Jam
26 Jan - 05:00 PM
Nairobi, Kenya
The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event (game creation) taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development. It is the growth of an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, we could come together, be creative, share experiences and express ourselves in a multitude of ways using video games – it is very universal. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48 hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity.
The structure of a jam is usually that everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon, watches a short video keynote with advice from leading game developers, and then a secret theme is announced. All sites worldwide are then challenged to make games based on that same theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. In January 2015, we had over 600 locations in 93 countries create 6866 games in one weekend! GGJ 2017 is January 20-22 at a location near you… if not you can make one of your own. The jam is known for helping foster new friendships, increase confidence and opportunities within the community. The jam is always an intellectual challenge. People are invited to explore new technology tools, trying on new roles in development and testing their skills to do something that requires them to design, develop create, test and make a new game in the time span of 48 hours.
The GGJ stimulates collaboration and is not a competition.
