Walmart Labs React Hackathon!
12 Aug - 08:30 AM
San Diego, United States
Come join @WalmartLabs in our very 1st Southern California hackathon for a day of developing, creating, and innovating. We challenge you to to build an application from start to finish in a competitive, fast-paced environment. We want you to be able to create a project from start to finish that you will be proud of by the end of the hackathon, whether big or small. We're bringing Silicon Valley to San Diego and we want YOU to be part of it. Hosted by the @WalmartLab's Women of Walmart In Tech, we invite programmers of all genders, backgrounds, and levels of experience to join us on Saturday, August 12 for 8 hours of hacking. Never been to a hackathon before? Come join us anyways because we will provide you the foundational tools to begin working on a starter React application Meet and collaborate with some of the engineers who are the great minds behind developing Walmart's online global business Take on the challenge by yourself or team up with other engineers in the local San Diego community and work together to build the next big thing. Invite your programmer friends and build that app you've always dreamed of Agenda: 8:30 am - 9:00 am: Breakfast 9:00 am - 9:15 am: Introduction 9:15 am - 7:00 pm: Coding (lunch and dinner provided) 7:00 pm - 7:15 pm: Presentation prep 7:15 pm - 8:30 pm: Presentations 8:30 pm - 8:45 pm: Judging 8:45 pm - 9:00 pm: Awards Challenges: Pick any one of these challenges below and develop an application that fits within the constraints:  Every Day Low Prices: Walmart's motto for the longest time - from the days of Sam Walton to today's world of eCommerce - is "Every Day Low Prices." Walmart aims to feature a great selection of high quality merchandise for affordable prices. Build an application that aims to help users save money in their day to day lives to improve their overall quality of life. This could be anything from helping people budget or presenting data to help users make more informed choices. Walmart in eCommerce: Walmart.com was founded in January 2000 as a subsidary of Wal-mart Stores Inc. One of the driving forces behind Walmart.com is us - @WalmartLabs. At the end of the day, Walmart serves as a retailer to the customers whether through stores, online, or mobile devices. In order to serve the millions of customers with our 1,000,000 products available online, we need the technology to support it. Today, you have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and experiment with our technology, the Walmart API. Build something - anything at all with our Walmart API. Be creative! Power of Technology: From modest beginnings in northwestern Arkansas in 1962, Walmart has grown to become a worldwide household name thanks to Sam Walton. Only in 2000 did Walmart move into the eCommerce world and continue growing as one of the largest retailers, in both the physical and digital world. Today, Walmart.com has 1,000,000 products available for their customers to show at their convenience whether it be online, in person, or even ordering online and picking up in stores! Build an application that renovates something old and brings a new modern spin to it to better assist people today. Presentation: A 3 minute demo. State the problem you solved and show off the functionality of your app. Judging: At the end of the day, our panel of engineers will decide who will take home the Grand Prize. We guarantee that everyone will gain something valuable from this hackathon! Innovation/Ambition - We want to challenge you to make something unique. Make sure to research your competitors before diving in to make sure you're not creating something that's already been made before. One last thing - make sure your application fits within the constraints of the challenges. User Interface/User Experience - Creating an application isn't all about functionality, but it's also about the visual elements as well. Make sure you put as much work into planning and designing as you put into coding in order to ensure a user friendly experience. Quality - We understand you don't have the time or resources to build an entire application in one day, and that's okay. That doesn't mean that work can't be done to make a well thought out, functional prototype to present. Test all those edge cases and fix the bugs that you can. Presentation - At the end of the day, we won't be able to look into everyone's code repositories so what you present to us is all we'll know. Be sure to explain your thought process, your research, and your approach. Make sure there is a clear defined problem and solution.  Hackathon Checklist: Laptop Charger RSVP on EventBrite Your ideas Feel free to bring your resume - we have open positions! ---- Keep a lookout for email updates through EventBrite as we approach the event. Women's Hackathon @ CSUSM April 22, 2017
          22 Apr - 08:30 AM
          San Marcos, United States
The Women’s Hackathon @ CSUSM is a bi-annual, 12-hour event that is open to high school girls and college women with varying background in computing technology. The term “hack” is used in the sense of exploratory programming, not its alternate meaning as unauthorized security breach to a computer system. Each event presents two challenges of local impact and asks student teams to propose and create computing technology solutions in the form of web-based or mobile applications. Students may come as a team or individuals interested in working with others at the event. Tech professionals serve as mentors and guide participants through the process of research, design, and development of their solutions. At the end of the event, teams present their solutions to judges from industry who in turn determine winners. Since its inaugural event in April 2014, the Hackathon has served over 250 young women from over 25 high schools and colleges in Southern California. For more information, please visit http://sandiegohackathon.org/.  The April 22 event appreciates funding from The Information and Communication Technologies & Digital Media Sector, California Community Colleges FAQs Do I need to be a Computer Science major or intend to major in Computer Science to participate? No. Creating effective computing technology solutions require talents from a diverse background. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? The event will provide free parking at a designated area on campus. More details will be sent to registered participants directly. Two great mass transit options are available that can help you get to CSUSM with ease: the BREEZE and the SPRINTER. More information about these two options can be found at https://www.csusm.edu/guide/transit.html.  Limited fund may be available for reimbursing costs related to public transportation, gas, or a group of students sharing Uber rides. Please contact event organizer for more detail. Do I need to bring a computer to the event? Many participants in the past preferred their own laptops at the event but a computer will be available for those who do not bring one. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Dr. Youwen Ouyang can be reached at ouyang@csusm.edu. Professor Sahar Mosley can be reached at smosleh@csusm.edu.
