We have developed a powerful new tool called ‘NewsReader’ which utilises natural language understanding and semantic web technology. Frank van Harmelen, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.  Frank van Harmelen is professor in Knowledge Representation & Reasoning in the AI department (Faculty of Science) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. After studying mathematics and computer science in Amsterdam, he moved to the Department of AI in Edinburgh, where he was awarded a PhD in 1989 for his research on meta-level reasoning. Bernardo Magnini, FBK, Italy. Bernardo Magnini is senior researcher at FBK, where he is the scientific coordinator of the Cognitive Computing research line. His interests are in the field of Natural Language Processing, particularly lexical semantics, question answering and textual entailment. He has launched EVALITA, the evaluation campaign for both NLP and speech tools for Italian and has co-chaired CLIC-it 2014, the first Italian conference on Computational Linguistics. He currently serves as President of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics. Sybren Kooistra, De Volkskrant and Yournalism. Sybren Kooistra is a data journalist at De Volkskrant and co-founder and editor-chief of Yournalism, a platform for investigative journalism. In 2008, he went to the United States as an aide to Obama's presidential campain. In 2013 he won a prize at an international press innovation contest for the news website of the future. He studied sociology, political science and social geography at Radboud University Nijmegen.  Prof. dr. Piek Vossen: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Piek Vossen is professor of Computational Lexicology at the Faculty of Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is a 2013 Spinoza Laureate and coordinator of the NewsReader project.    The Hackathon  Wednesday 25 November 2015, 10:00 - 18:00 Amsterdam Public Library  In June 2014 and January 2015 we ran several hackathons in both London and Amsterdam in which NewsReader enabled the attendees to pull out networks of interactions between entrepreneurs, politicians, companies and thoroughly test drive our technology. This November, we’re releasing a new version of our processing pipeline and we're scaling up to 10 million processed news articles from sources about the automotive industry to obtain a searchable database of the news. At the hackathon, you can play with this dataset and explore the processing pipeline.  The global automotive industry has a value in the order of $1 trillion annually. The industry comprises a massive network of suppliers, manufacturers, advertisers, marketeers and journalists. Each of these players has his/her own story, often with unexpected origins or endings; one day you may be CEO of a big car company, the next you are out and making pizzas. Omdat het in een zeer oude (slecht geïsoleerde) Prodentfabriek is, in een hal van zeker 5 meter hoog kan het in de nacht koud worden. Een fleece dekentje doet dan wonderen voor de echte diehards die de 24 uur wakker kunnen blijven. Daarnaast zijn er tal van hotels te vinden waar je snachts kunt vertoeven, maar wees op tijd terug! De teampitches beginnen namelijk alweer om 10:00 s'ochtends en hotelbedjes slapen vaak veel te lekker. Jij wilt toch ook niet die prijs van 2500 euro mislopen? Heb je een id nodig of is er een leeftijdsgrens? Nee, iedereen boven de 10 jaar is welkom om mee te doen aan de hack. Wel is op jonge leeftijd toestemming en waar nodig begeleiding van de ouder verplicht, het wordt namelijk een zeer lange dag en er zijn veel mensen aanwezig waar de organisatie niet de hele tijd op kan letten. Ook zijn wij als organisatie niet verantwoordelijk voor enige letsels, diefstallen of schade aan personen of apparatuur. Vermeld dus wanneer je onder de 16 bent een telefoonnummer van een van de ouders/verzorgers op je ticket die je afgeeft aan een van de organisatoren bij binnenkomst. -------------------------  What is this event?  This will be a one afternoon Data Science hackathon where participants have the opportunity to work on unique healthcare datasets and to have real impact in finding ways to improve health care. This event is open to anyone interested in Data Science and machine learning, text mining, visualisation, data intensive programming and general hacking. UMC Utrecht will make available a unique set of patient data, combined with data from external sources (think of CBS Data (Statistics Netherlands), KNMI (weather data), Geo Health (environmental data), City of Utrecht) For who is this?  Everybody experienced in Data Science (machine learning, datamining, textmining), visualisation and/or data engineering is welcome to join. Note that you are expected to be able to load up the data yourself during the event. Due to the uniqueness of the datasets made available by the UMC Utrecht, only a limited amount of seats is available, so be quick!  You will especially enjoy the afternoon if:  You like machine learning, to think about and apply models to data;  You like to program to reach your goal and still be able to collaborate in a team;  You like to use visualisation to communicate the results.  Background  One year ago, the Dutch 'Doorbraakproject Big Data' (breakthrough project) came in contact with the psychiatry unit of the Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). After some joint sessions, thanks to the enthusiasm of the participants, a collaborative effort with GoDataDriven started. This has resulted in a first successful 'Data Science Open Kitchen', in May 2015. This provided interesting insights that were beneficial to the Psychiatry department. At the moment there is more data available and it’s already pre-analysed, giving opportunities for an even more challenging event. That’s why we invite participants for a Hackathon on a greater scale to help us to make an impact on the way Data Science can help to improve health care.   Agenda  After a brief opening by Ms. F. Scheepers (psychiatrist, head of UMC Utrecht psychiatry unit and initiator of this project)  you'll quickly get to work.
