FAQs
Do I have to be a "hacker" to join?
No! Everyone is welcome to join!
Hacking is creative problem solving.
It does not have to involve technology.
It's very beginner friendly.
But I'm really a complete beginner. Can I still come?
Of course! Check out this great post by Oleg about getting started with hackathons.
The greater the diversity of backgrounds and skills, the more awesome the solutions will be!
How much does it cost?
Nothing. It is totally free.
What is LoRaWAN?
It's a wireless technology, much like your regular WiFi, but it's ideal for IoT and battery powered sensors because it has a huge range.
Head over to The Things Network website, and check out the LEARN section and the forum.
What is civic tech?
It is technology that enables citizen engagement. It means citizens building infrastructure for their city, instead of governments building it. That's what The Things Network communities are doing with LoRaWAN in multiple cities of the world, among them, here in Zurich we are part of a community that has already deployed a LoRaWAN network in the city.
What hardware will be available to use?
We will provide a selection of microcontrollers, sensors and components that we believe are suitable for the challenges.
Do we get to keep the provided hardware?
Yes.
What should I bring to the event?
Bring your laptop and your ideas on how to improve your city!
Feel free to bring your own hardware (microcontroller, sensors, etc), designs, enclosures, or whatever to help you create a solution for a challenge. The development board is The Things UNO, which has an operating voltage of 5v in case you want to prepare something upfront.
Where can I get in touch with other participants?
On Slack! If you haven't joined already, sign up for it.
A large part of communication during the event will happen there!
How do I get to the location?
We recommend to use public transport to get to the event. The location is a few steps away from train, tram and bus stations.
Is there a code of conduct?
Yes, there is.
How can I contact the organizer if I have questions?
Get in touch with us via email info@makezurich.ch or via twitter @makezurich.
I want to be a sponsor!
Awesome! Contact us via email info@makezurich.ch!

DETAILS
Talk 1: "Welcome & Future Perspectives" (Holger Kyas, IBM Switzerland)
Objectives: Welcoming idea guidance on the Developer UnConference and future vision on latest technology trends analyzing their overall impact.
About Holger: Senior Technical Client Architect@IBM, https://www.linkedin.com/in/holgerkyas/, https://twitter.com/holgerkyas
Talk 2: "Startup in a third world country" (Issam OURRAi, L'Etabli de L'Innovation (France))
Objectives: How an entrepreneur can use the positive and avoid negative part of creating a startup in a third world country.
About Issam: https://www.linkedin.com/in/samourrai/
Talk 3: "Scaling Jupyter Notebooks with Distributed Kernels" (Kevin Bates, IBM USA)
Objectives: The Jupyter Notebook Stack has become the "de facto" platform used by data scientists to build interactive applications and with the popularity of deep learning, there is an increasing need of resources to make deep learning effective. In this session, we will discuss how one can scale their Jupyter Notebook deployment by enabling kernels to run in a distributed mode using multiple compute nodes, an analytical engine such as Apache Spark or even containers managed by Kubernetes.
About Kevin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinbatessoftware/
Talk 4: "Are data scientists the true "rock stars" of the Roskilde Festival?" (Frank Ketelaars, IBM Netherlands)
Objectives: Everyone who has ever been to a large music festival knows first-hand about seemingly being lost at sea as crowds of people push you in a direction you do not necessarily want to go. How do you get to the stage with your favorite band, find your friends and an acceptably clean toilet? The Roskilde Festival, a yearly rock festival in Denmark, has lots of similarities with large cities where people get together for a bit of fun, sleep, eat ... and drink. Crowd managers are equipped with years of experience running festivals like this and they have established a good gut feeling on the behavior of people in crowds and when/where it gets too busy. IBM and the Copenhagen Business School have run yearly hackathons around the festival to validate how data and analytics can help the organization to be more efficient and effective in the future. Frank will talk about the organization of the big data lab and its accomplishments, but also the challenges faced during the hackathons.
About Frank: https://www.linkedin.com/in/frankketelaars/
Talk 5: "Beyond DevOps" (Michael Wechner, Wyona Switzerland)
Objectives: DevOps is great, but I believe it is important to bridge the gap between all major project stages, including requirements engineering. This can be done by using BDD scenarios for all project stages. We have developed a tool called Yulup to support this approach https://www.yulup.com/en/why_yulup.html. I will explain how the BDD approach for all project stages works and demonstrate it by using real world examples. I will also give an outlook how NLP will help to execute tests automatically and how AI will help to generate documentation automatically, in order to make code maintenance more efficient.
About Michael: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelwechner/
Talk 6: "X2Go: Free/Libre/OpenSource Remote Desktop and Remote Application Services for Linux" (Stefan Baur, X2Go Project Germany)
Objectives: Pretty much everybody knows what Citrix offers on the Microsoft Windows platform. But did you know that the same core functionality - full remote desktops and seamless remote applications - is available for Linux servers, and for free? This talk/demo will give you a quick overview of the most important features, focused on deploying X2Go using a Linux system on POWER platform hardware, but also showing the other end of the connection, the ready-to-use (and also free) ThinClient image X2Go provides.
