TechNation & ODI Leeds: #SkillsSkillsSkills - Digital Jobs Dashboard Hackathon
              09 Jun - 10:00 AM
              Leeds, United Kingdom
Saturday 9 June10:00 - 17:30ODI Leeds, Munro House 'Digital skills' does not mean 'computer wizard.' In a fast and technologically-driven world, most jobs require at least basic IT skills - using email, spreadsheets, word processing, navigating websites, uploading pictures, etc. Jobs in the 'digital' or 'tech' sector require more advanced skills, from knowing programming languages and coding to data analysis and machine learning. There is also the matter of jobs in these sectors that aren't 'techie' but still need appropriate skill and knowledge of digital systems. For example, popular jobs like content marketing and social media management require you to be savvy with computers, mobiles, and more PLUS you also need to be creative with copy and photos. This is a jobs landscape currently without any kind of map or guide. Not for long! We are very pleased to be hosting a hackathon with Tech Nation to explore the data they have collected about skills jobs, and demand for these, accross the North of England. Earlier this year, Henri Egle Sorotos of Tech Nation published this article about the 'North-North' divide when it came to jobs. He found that a greater proportion of digital tech jobs were posted in Greater Manchester compared to our parts of the North. The data he used for this article, plus other datasets collected in the last 12 months, will be used for the hackathon and available to anyone who joins us on Saturday 9th June. Further details about the data can be found on this Google Doc. We also welcome other organisations to bring their own datasets about the digital jobs market. ODI Leeds will host the hackathon at their beautiful, naturally-lit innovation space in a well-connected part of Leeds. Easy to get to by foot, bus and train. As always, it will be a great atmosphere with great food, good company, and plenty of energy.
                iamtheCODE Liverpool Global Goals Hackathon
                09 Jun - 09:00 AM
                Merseyside, United Kingdom
Join us on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of June for two interactive days full of learning and inspiration   For the first time in Merseyside over 60 girls, aged 11 to 18 years are invited to the Unilever Offices in Port Sunlight to take part in a two day experience to learn about: the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals practice Design Thinking explore the Kano Computer Kit the iamtheCODE iDEA Curriculum create with technology and code  Our aim is to address the STEAMED (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Entrepreneurship and Design) skills shortage in the UK and to inspire the next generation of young women. Most of us have a vague idea that knowledge of computer science will help you get a job, but the actual numbers are pretty shocking. Software powers our economy, but less than 2.4 percent of college students and women graduate with a CS degree. That means there aren’t going to be enough graduates to fill the jobs. To make matters worse, 95 percent of our schools don’t teach programming.    That’s what we’re looking to change at iamtheCODE. Together we can work to create economic empowerment and inclusion through technology.  We have been working globally with technology hubs across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe and for over two years with the Guildford Library in the Surrey. We have been running Global Digital Fridays, Hackathons, Makerdays, Geek Week, and BootCamps, offering a variety of workshops for participants from age 6 to 85. These hackathons are truly inspiring and are facilitated by Senegalese-born British Businesswoman Marieme Jamme (World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, Global Teacher Prize Academy member and an award-winning technologist).  By the end of the weekend, participants will have had the opportunity to: Decode the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals) and understand key indicators that could drive social change Get hands-on with the iamtheCODE Design Thinking framework to build technology solutions related to the SDGs: Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test Make technology and create with code using Kano Kits  Use technology to design a solution to raise awareness around or address specific SDGs including Goals: Quality Education, Gender Equality, Life Below Water and Global Partnerships Win a prize! Girls must be accompanied by a teacher or an adult if under 16. All food and transportation will be provided. The Cost: FREE Prizes: Computer Kits, mentoring, and tee-shirts Get in touch with us:  Mariéme Jamme at marieme@iamthecode.org or David Connor at david.connor@the2030hub.com for more information about the event.

                    Cyber Security Workshop
                    17 May - 05:00 PM
                    Sheffield, United Kingdom
Sheffield Legal Hackers is the newest chapter of the global Legal Hackers movement. About this Event Cyber-crime continues to increase and rapidly evolve globally. The number of cyber-attacks across the world increased by 18% year on year in 2017, and the UK is the most cyber-attacked country in Europe, second globally only to the US. Although there are attacks that are advanced and costly for the perpetrators, it is actually the basic, cheap methods that are still the primary attack vectors – sending malware to a victim via a phishing email remains the number one attack vector. Growing regulations make it costly to ignore the risks. GDPR will introduce tougher fines for non-compliance of the regulations, which include security requirements, and for data breaches (of up to £17m or 4% of turnover). The effects of cyber-crime are all too visible in the media, and the threats present a clear, present and ongoing danger to the vast majority of businesses. This session will explore the topic of Phishing, the risks & solutions and social engineering. 5.00-5.30pm – Meet and greet5.30 – 5.40pm – Introduction about Legal Hackers5.40 – 6.00pm – Presentation by Graham Thomson – Phishing – risk & solutions6.00pm onwards – Social engineering workshopPizza, drinks & networking7.30pm – Close About Sheffield Legal Hackers Sheffield Legal Hackers is your local Chapter of the global Legal Hackers movement of lawyers, policymakers, designers, technologists, and academics who explore and develop creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of law and technology. Through local meetups, hackathons, and workshops taking place approximately once a month, Sheffield Legal Hackers spot issues and opportunities where technology can improve and inform the practice of law and where law, legal practice, and policy can adapt to rapidly changing technology. ----------------- Photo by Taskin Ashiq on Unsplash
