PPMA, Matrix-SCM and Local Government Staff Commission are delighted to be hosting a Brexit Hackathon on Tuesday October 2nd in Northern Ireland. The event is free and is being held as part of the PPMA’s research programme with Brexit being one of our key topics. We didn’t want to repeat previous research and commentary on Brexit. Rather we wanted to undertake some action learning work which will help us deliver some tangible recommendations and enable us to follow up in six months’ time to check our progress.. A hackathon is a quick fire, high pressure, high intensity ideas session. We will tackle some of the workforce related Brexit challenges in a different way – with the emphasis being on collaboration, speed and practical outcomes. Our delegates will review our research question and, through enquiry and dialogue, develop and distil a series of ideas, recommendations, opportunities and outcomes.    We’re looking forward to welcoming delegates from organisations impacted by Brexit.  Following the hackathon, PPMA and Matrix-SCM will be preparing a research output. This will include case studies and video blogs that will support the research. This will be launched at the Local Government Staff Commission Conference in November 2018. The hackathon will comprise the following activities:  Framing the opportunity -                       Introduction Identifying the propelling question -       Generate: Start articulating your ideas Developing the opportunity -                  Collaborate: Challenge and build on your ideas Selecting the best idea -                         Refine and Pitch: Choose the best idea, refine it,  sell it Endorse and Commit -                            Action: Agree how outcomes will be taken forward Join us at Craigavon Civic Centre, Craigavon at 9:30am for registration. This is a no-pressure hackathon - basically you're hacking around a theme for 12 hours for the craic, as they would say. Come up with any idea, and there's no pressure to make a start up or take the idea forward if you don't want to. This is just for fun (and parrots). Theme TBA.

Computing Radiation Effects for Advancing Medicine (CREAM-1) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Computing the effects of radiation on biological systems, from complete beginners to advanced hackathon! Would you like to: Build your own virtual radiotherapy machine? Calculate what radiation does when it enters biological systems? Simulate the small animal irradiator/linac/CT scanner relevant to your research? Play with high energy virtual beams of protons, carbon ions, photons, neutrons? Work out the dosimetry for your experiments? Discover computational approaches to radiobiology? Contribute to and develop models of biological response to radiation? Use Geant4 through Topas – the easy way to do hard stuff well? Network with experts doing these kinds of things? If the answer to any of these is Yes then you should come to CREAM-1 the Topas Workshop/Computational Radiation Biology Hackathon being held at Queen’s University, Belfast on the 3rd – 6th of April 2018. This 4-day event is designed to allow the complete beginner (literally no computational simulation experience necessary) to come and learn whilst the last two days will accommodate the solving real research problems when experienced users will come together with beginners to solve a number of problems using Topas and other computational tools, hopefully leading to a number of new collaborations and publications. 3rd & 4th April: An introduction to TOPAS, suitable for complete beginners.  5th & 6th April: Multi-scale models for radiobiology & radiotherapy 'hackathon' event, using a range of computational tools. A workshop to identify the key problems with multi-scale models and collaborate to solve them. There is no taught content on these days. Mariana is a passionate software developer who studied human-computer interaction and usability at RWTH Aachen in Germany, worked at Ericsson with cloud computing and then moved to Sweden and started working at Klarna. The thing Mariana enjoys the most is learning new things! One of her learning journeys led her to discover clojure well enough to teach it to beginners. Now she is developing clojure serverless services with her current team. Workshop Details: Maintaining a server physically is a thing of the past now due to Cloud computing. Next is having serverless services that run on demand! It might sound complicated but it is not, join me and walk through setting up your own fun serverless service. You're invited to explore new technology tools and testing your skills by designing, creating and testing your own new game — all in less than 48 hours.

Traffic jams getting you down? Want to cycle more safely? The TIMON hackathon is the ideal place to think outside the box to come up with new and innovative ways to reduce urban pollution, improve traffic/pedestrian safety and achieve more flexible travel planning. With a €6,000 Prize Pool, the event is aimed at people with an interest in open data or transport from students to transit authorities, from train spotters to cycling vultures, no matter who you are, your skills or your level of expertise, you are invited to join us. The event will be hosted by Queen's University Belfast at their newly opened Computer Science Building, showcasing the TIMON application and open ecosystem giving attendees full access to transport and environmental data from Belfast, and transport, environmental and traffic data from Helmond (Netherlands) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). What is TIMON? The TIMON project has as its main objectives to increase the safety, sustainability, flexibility and efficiency of road transport systems using cooperative communication by processing open data related to mobility through an open web-based platform and mobile app, developed with the purpose of delivering information and services to drivers, businesses and vulnerable road users in real time. What will happen at the Hackathon? You’ll be given complete access to the TIMON Rest API, our proprietary route-planning algorithms and our Android/iOS mobile app SDK, and you’ll be thinking outside the box to come up with new and innovative ways to reduce urban pollution, improve traffic/pedestrian safety and achieve more flexible travel planning. Open data will be made available as part of a collaboration with transport authorities and local government in Belfast, Helmond (Netherlands) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). What will be included during the Hackathon? There will be an opening reception on the evening of Friday 19th January.  Lunch and refreshments will also be provided on both the Saturday and Sunday of the event.  Attendees will however be expected to bring their own laptops.
