Code for Cardboard
18 Dec - 05:00 PM
Belfast, United Kingdom
On Saturday 19th December from 9am- 6pm Kainos will be holding a Google Cardboard Hackathon.
The hackathon aims to inspire how schools of the future will deliver teaching using VR technologies. We were inspired by Google’s virtual reality efforts to explore the environment along with Magic Leap’s vision for marine and astronomy AR lessons in the classroom and we hope you are too.
There are some cool prizes up for grabs for the most engaging education ideas (though if you want to come along and build something that’s not education based that’s ok too). Food and refreshments will be provided during the day.
If you don’t know how to code for cardboard, don’t worry! One of our Kainos engineers, Neil Thom, will be hosting a workshop on Friday 18th December from 5pm – 6.30pm at our Belfast Kainos office to demonstrate the basics of getting a simple cardboard app up and running. This means you will have everything set up for getting stuck in on Saturday morning. Kainos will have mentors on hand too.
We will be providing Cardboard VR headsets for use during the events as well as providing food and drink.
This FREE event is open to students (16+) and industry professionals and places are limited. If you are interested, register your interest asap!

FAQs
How does the Hackathon work? What will I be doing over the weekend? It's simple. You register for the event then come to Farset on the day and then make whatever you and your team thinks is a cool idea. You make something interesting, and in return we provide a coworking space, food/refreshments, and awesome prizes. We will have a few suggestions for those that want more direction but ultimately you decide!
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
Yes, we require everyone attending to be 18 years of age or older. The Hackathon event can run through the night and alcohol may be on site over the course of the weekend.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The building is situated in the Weavers Court business park, with ample parking, 24/7 security, and access to further office and warehousing space, all five minutes walk from Europa bus/train station in Belfast city centre.
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Some equipment will be on site. Primarily a few spare monitors and connections for power and internet access however you will need to bring everything along you will potentially need for your hack.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Yes, although a copy on the Eventbrite app will be more than sufficient. It helps us keep track of numbers!
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
If a team member can't make it and you have a replacement feel free to give the ticket to someone else that wants to join your team. Otherwise, let us know and we can reallocate the ticket.
Liberty Inforthenight (LIT Hackathon)
28 Oct - 12:00 PM
Belfast, United Kingdom
Liberty IT would like to invite you to Liberty Inforthenight, a 24-hour hackathon, taking place from 12pm Wednesday 28th - 12pm Thursday 29th October in our Belfast office. Liberty Inforthenight is open to any first year and second year student studying an IT related course from Ulster University, Queen’s University and Belfast MET.
In line with Liberty IT’s commitment to making a difference in our local community, the theme will be centred on developing innovative ideas and solutions for our NI charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. These real-world challenges will focus on boosting their social media presence and engagement.
This event is all about creative problem solving and giving you the chance to come together with like-minded people for a fun filled 24 hours. Don’t worry – this isn’t about building a fully functioning app within 24 hours, it’s all about the ideation and innovation process and giving you the opportunity to dive into our challenges, further develop your skills, collaborate and learn something new – ultimately helping you with your IT studies in the future.
Using a development environment, you will work in teams of 2-4 individuals (predetermined by you or we can help match people to teams) and at the end, you will pitch your idea to be in with the chance of winning some great prizes and mentoring opportunities (take our word for it – you’ll not be disappointed!).
As a student, this is a great opportunity to get some real-world coding experience, spend time with experienced developers from Liberty IT, and potentially make a big difference to those living with cancer in NI. You don’t need to be the best coder in the world, we are looking for people who are creative, passionate about IT and want to further their own skills for the future.
Places are strictly limited so register today! As we anticipate a high demand, please do not register unless you fully intend to participate and can commit to attending the full event. If you know someone else who would be interested in attending, feel free to share!
Specific information on the event will be shared once registration has been received but in the meantime, if you would like further details, please email LITCommunications@liberty-it.co.uk
Good luck and looking forward to meeting you!
