OVERVIEW Retail Technology Startup, Miro Solutions UK, is excited to be hosting an XR / E-Commerce Hackathon on March 23rd 2019 from 9:00-21:00 at The University of Westminster Cavendish. This hackathon will challenge participants to use both Virtual & Augmented Reality in order to change the way in which customers shop online.  Miro is Smart-Fit Software that aims to take the guesswork out of buying footwear online, using XR to increase fit confidence and reduce online retailer's physical returns. Founded by a University of Westminster Alumni in 2018; Miro is the first of its kind and has been recognized in Startup Competitions around the UK.  As a Female Founded business we hope that this event will encourage women involved in, or interested in STEM careers. Whether or not you have been to a hackathon in the past, you've never been to one like this before!  This event aims to bring together tech-students from around London to collaborate, innovate, and most importantly - have fun!  SKILL REQUIREMENTS & REWARDS We are looking for 25 university students from a wide range of backgrounds including but not limited to: Web Design & Development (UX & UI), Mobile & Web Computing, Software Engineering and Project Management. Experience in AR / VR / XR is a plus but not a requirement. We do, however, expect participants to have prior knowledge of development. The aim of this hack will be to give students the chance to apply the skills they've learned in the classroom to real-world enterprise application development, alongside our industry mentors.  This is a great opportunity not only to connect with other students, but to learn from professional mentors in the field. This event will give participants a unique opportunity to develop their portfolios in both a fun and collaborative environment.  DETAILS Lunch will be catered by Nando's and beverages will be provided by Camden Brewery. Additional snacks and  beverages will be provided throughout the day. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know beforehand so that we can provide alternative arrangements. MARS HABITAT DESIGN HACKATHON
          16 Mar - 09:00 AM
          London, United Kingdom
The Mars Habitat Design Hackathon at the British Interplanetary Society The idea of Mars Colonies and settlement is quickly moving from the realm of science fiction to reality. NASA recently ran 3-D Prited Habitat for Mars Competition, Bjarke Ingels Group is building Mars Science City simulation in UAE and there are other initiatives underway. While people have mixed opinions about this pursuit, it is clear that if and when this happens, we have to collectively ensure to take our best learnings and practices from Earth. This opens an opportunity to improve things for the better, both for starting a new branch of civilization on Mars and for improving things here on Earth. Mars Society London (MSL) is creating a unique 2-day hackathon at the British Interplanetary Society to encourage and help multidisciplinary teams put together Mars habitat designs, that can be submitted in the Mars Colony Contest.  This event will be a unique opportunity to learn and get feedback and guidance from the industry experts and to work in teams with people bringing a combination of skills and thinking towards the goal of designing a first human settlement on Mars. We are particularly keen to hear from people who feel they can contribute in the following areas:Technical Design: (40%) What systems will be used? How will they work?Economic: (30%) How can the colony be made economically successful?Social/Cultural: (10%) What should Martian society be like? What kinds of schools, arts, sports, and other activities, should there be? How, given a fresh start, can life on Mars be made better than life on Earth?Political/Organisational: (10%) How should the colony govern itself?Aesthetic: (10%) How can the colony be made beautiful? ---ABOUT The Mars Colony Contest The International Mars Society is holding a contest for the best plan for a Mars colony of 1000 people. There will be a prize of $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third. In addition, the best 20 papers will be published in a book “Mars Colonies: Plans for Settling the Red Planet.” ---NOTE: Participation in this event does not immediately qualify you for any of the above prizes. You have to put together a written proposal and send it to the International Mars Society as part of the contest to be considered. The goal of the hackathon is to support you, through mentors and speakers and having a collaborative environment and venue to work on this, in putting together a design, and the beginnings of a proposal, that you can then submit for the contest if you choose to. Full Details about the contest here:  http://marscolony.marssociety.org/ or https://www.marssocietylondon.com/marscolonyprize/  Disabled Access Please note, there is very limited disabled access within the BIS building. At the front door, there is a ramp which will allow wheelchair access to the front of the building. (Once inside, it is step-free to the conference room). We regret that there is no disabled access to either the Gents or Ladies toilets. The other rooms, including the Council Room, all involve stairs and are not suitable for some disabled people.

Quantum Computing Hackathon for the Space Sector  Networked Quantum Information Technologies (NQIT), the UK quantum computing hub, and the Satellite Applications Catapult are excited to be hosting a Quantum Computing Hackathon on 15th March 2019 in Oxford. The hackathon will offer participants the opportunity to look into the ways in which quantum computers can be used to address challenges within the space sector and encouraged to apply their coding skills to propose potential solutions. While you don’t have to have any prior experience of hackathons, the popularity of this event means we have to ask that you have a background in a relevant field (the space sector, mathematical or physical sciences or quantum information processing) while being from an academic, industry or government background. Most importantly however, we ask that you bring your knowledge, creativity and energy to the day. As a free event, the day will kick off at 9am through until 5pm and will include free lunch, followed by beer and pizza (!) but please note that we cannot cover your travel or accommodation costs. This is a great chance to work in a friendly collaborative atmosphere, to learn new skills and to help to develop a road map for an industry-relevant application. Please note: Space is limited and due to the popularity of the Quantum Computing Hackathon, we are committed to ensuring that attendees represent a cross section of backgrounds and experience. The registration form will allow you give us a brief description of your background and knowledge and we will then confirm your attendance via email by Monday 11th March 2019 at the latest.
