London, United Kingdom
On Wednesday 5th September, Expedia Group are hosting a panel discussion on “How to build a diverse and inclusive technical team”. We hope to share what we have learnt so far on our ongoing journey, as well as sharing learnings from other people who are passionate about this topic, who will share their ideas. We will be covering the full lifecycle from building the right environment, to attraction and retention.
On the evening we will have drinks, food and networking so as well as learning from our inspiring panel members you can connect with others who have the same passions and interests!
Who will be joining us on the panel:
Nasreen AbdulJaleel, Director of Technology, Brand Expedia
Nasreen AbdulJaleel has always wanted to save the world. Currently, her focus is on increasing gender balance in technology. In her role as Director of Technology, she leads Expedia's Analytics and UI Platform teams . Her early career was in machine learning. Her interest in fast delivery prompted a switch to web applications in 2005. She has worked in several roles in this domain since then. She has a bachelor's degree in CS from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai where she was the only woman in her class. She also has a Masters in CS from the University of Massachusetts.
Phoebe Greig, Software Engineer, BBC
Phoebe was a late starter to the tech scene. Having had a career in finance, it was only when she started teaching herself javascript, that she realised she had found her calling, and in 2015, she decided to take the plunge and change career. Phoebe joined the Net-A-Porter technology graduate scheme and a year later, she joined the BBC as a Software Engineer. She now builds cutting edge tools for journalists. Where tools are built with accessibility in mind, to ensure that all people, regardless of their range of hearing, movement, sight, or cognitive ability can participate equally.
Phoebe is Co-Founder of Women Driven Development, an organisation that brings gender minorities, leaders and future leaders in tech together, to share knowledge, experiences and to create real connections, promoting sponsorship through hackathons, practical sessions and events. She is also Co-Director of Lesbians Who Tech, London, where she organise talks, conferences and events for LGBTQ+ women, non-binary people and allies in tech.
Two further panel members still to be announced…
We are also very happy to announce that the event will be moderated by Bonita Darkoh, Insights and Planning Manager, Expedia Partner Solutions.

She curated an award-nominated platform called WalkingBrandUK, which focuses on D&I within the creative industry. 2. The day includes visiting startup locations around the city, so wear comfortable clothing and shoes, with minimum bags if possible. And give yourself extra travel time on the day to avoid being late or left behind. As communication with late guests by phone or messenger is limited once we leave the meeting spot at 11:30am.
3. All building locations are fully accessible. However, do get in touch within 60 minutes of booking if you have any specific travel, mobility or accessibility needs.

Missing Maps Hackathon at Imperial
28 Aug - 05:30 PM
London, United Kingdom
The Missing Maps project puts the most vulnerable places in the developing world on the map!
The most vulnerable places in the developing world are not mapped which means that first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts. The aim of the project is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the developing world.
With your help, we can directly improve the lives of some of the planet’s most vulnerable people. By contributing to this project, volunteers, like yourself, are able to facilitate the work of international and local NGOs who can use the data to better respond to crises.
Both beginners and experienced mappers are welcome to join this mapathon!
Interested in learning more whilst enjoying free Pizza? Come along to our third session on Tuesday 28th August at 5:30PM.

HACK FEAR
25 Aug - 09:30 AM
London, United Kingdom
EDIT - This event is now SOLD OUT. There are a couple more dev-only tickets so contact the organisers if you are one. Livestream available from 10am here.
HACK Fear is an interdisciplinary hackathon bringing together technologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, academics, hardware tinkerers, UX, gamers, activists with parkour and mindfulness practitioners to team up and experiment on designing and building out ideas and solutions to hack our own fear and develop our self awareness through technology.
There will be:
Interactive workshops, both physical and non
Intensive hacking sessions where teams work on the design and implementation of a prototype that makes progress in hacking fear
Input and feedback from subject matter experts
Deeper work uncovering and moving past your own fears and shared ones
We welcome coming both solo and as a team. Cross disciplinary teams will be created with the intent to maximise the potential towards successful fear hacking.
The ideas that come out of Fear Hack could contribute towards R&D for the award winning work of Karen Palmer, who is currently in development for RIOT*, an emotionally responsive, film, which uses facial recognition and A.I. technology to navigate through a dangerous riot.
Please note: Bring a laptop. The event will be livestreamed and remote listeners will have opportunities to input comments/requests. Inform the organisers if you do not want to be recorded.
*RIOT: You are confronted by a riot cop. Respond with fear and the film goes in one direction respond with anger and it goes in another. RIOT makes the player aware of their subconscious behaviour and enables them to consciously build new neurological pathways in their brain, to override automatic behaviour responses and create new ones.
