ShfWIT - We're coding but not just coding
20 Nov - 05:30 PM
Sheffield, United Kingdom
We launched in June and then met again in August - with #TechTea beginning in September.
November will be the start of events every two months where we'll begin to put into action what we've learnt from Sheffield women in technology so far. Each event will have time to chat and and, if networking isn't your thing and sends a shiver down your spine, don't be put off! There'll be friendly faces looking forward to saying hello and introducing you to people.
What will the event involve?
17.30 Doors open for drinks, snacks and chat.
18.00 Talks start (see below for more details).
19:30 Over to you. Please bring along any Sheffield women in tech news you have to pass on, events to advertise, questions to ask or ideas to share.
There'll be time for more drinks, snacks and chat until we close at 20.00
No, I fly them - Shehla Ali
Shehla Ali is a freelance digital marketeer, drone photographer and a Google Digital Garage trainer. Shehla also runs Cameratic, a blog she created to showcase her photography, filming and copy writing, as well as Drone 360, where she creates aerial photography.
Shehla will talk about her rollercoast ride since quitting her job two years ago to work remotely and travel. Since then she has set up multiple companies, further developed her knowledge of technology and experienced working in male dominated environments. If you're a budding creative who doesn't know where to start or more experienced but stuck in your comfort zone, this talk may give you a quiet and gentle push to start moving.
A series of fortunate blags - Tanya FIsh
Tanya Fish has been enthusing about science and making in some form or other for most of her life. She's written tutorials, magazine articles, and educational materials. She's talked about making to all sorts of audiences, including the Guild of Makers Launch, Hackaday Unconferences, and at Maker Faires. She runs workshops at festivals, conferences, and universities; and has just ventured into YouTube.
In this talk, Tanya explains how being out of your depth is an advantage, how you are worth more than you think and how there is no such thing as modesty when you're bigging yourself up.
Coding and hackathon(ing) - Kat Walker and Darren Vong
Kat Walker is a Computer Science student and demonstrator at Sheffield University and a Code First Girls Instructor. Darren Vong is a Full Stack Developer at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and a lead instructor at Code First Girls.
In this talk, Kat and Darren will talk about their experiences supporting Code First Girls and attending hackathons. If you've ever wanted to learn to code or develop your coding knowledge, attend a hackathon (or aren't sure what a hackathon is) but have never had chance to ask questions in advance, tonight may be your night.
The small but important print
Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to work in digital right now, you don’t have to identify as a woman, you don’t have to know how to code or how to explain bitcoin. You do have come in, be open and ready to participate in bringing about positive change.
Babies and children are welcome to attend with a (vaguely) responsible adult. If you can’t make the event and would like to be kept updated, sign up to our mailing list or follow and join in on Twitter @ShfWIT.
Kindly sponsored by Egress.
Leeds Blockchain Hackathon 2018
17 Nov - 08:00 AM
Leeds, United Kingdom
The first Leeds Blockchain Hackathon is here, and you’re invited.
#LBH2018 is the ultimate event for learning, hacking and networking for teams of budding coders, developers, tech enthusiasts and people from all areas of the vibrant tech community in Leeds. The grand prize will be awarded for the most ambitious, impressive or fully realized prototype and we’ll have experienced judges from business and academia and mentors to encourage and support all participants.
If you're a newbie, don't panic! There will be technical experts on hand to help you build your project.
Oh and, we're bringing for the beer and pizza. For 48 hours!
So, what is a hackathon, and why blockchain?
Hackathons are premier start-up incubators where disruptive, breakthrough ideas come to life in a myriad of ways. These are engaging events where teams of developers collaborate, sharpen their skills and bring their ideas to life.
We've all seen cryptocurrency mania in the news, but what else can we use this technology enable? What is beyond currency? Are there new networks and relationships could we create in a world where blockchain means untrusted devices can co-operate in predictable ways?

PROJECTS
We are interested in projects that do good things. Does your idea mean greater access to technology? Does your idea tackle a real world problem facing ordinary people? Is your idea accessible?
To give you a headstart, our conversations with Leeds City Council have given us these "starters for ten":
1) Improvements to Housing Standards and Growth - e.g:
- Capture, trade and pay for energy consumption across the councils housing stock
- Manage occupancy and rental of council properties with greater efficiency
2) Greener and More Effective Travel and Transport - e.g:
- More effective collection and payment of parking fees, tolls and/or Congestion Zone tariffs
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable open data that can be used to plan and manage traffic movement
3) Increased Health and Wellbeing - e.g:
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable patient data wherever it is needed
- Record stocks, transfers and usage of controlled medicines
4) Environmental and Climate Improvement - e.g:
- Trading of carbon or other credits to offset environmental impact
- Provide secure, unhackable and auditable climate data wherever it is needed
5) Enable and Support Smart City Initiatives - e.g:
- Trading city centre sensor data for value in a smart city economy
- Providing solutions for a city of the future with autonomous transportation and other IOT based services
6) Reduce City Council Costs - e.g:
- Removing the need for intermediaries in data collection and payment systems
- Provide secure, open council data without the need for complex systems and solutions
Remember you are welcome to work on your own project outside these ideas. These are just nudges.

Q4 RSC Hackathon
08 Nov - 10:00 AM
Manchester, United Kingdom
Come and join the colleague insight team as you and your store colleagues help us improve the store experience. It’s your chance to hear about what’s coming up, and get involved with how things will change in the future. Be part of shaping some of the changes and helping us improve things for stores.
The Hackathon is a session designed to get you involved in decision making and problem solving around the topics that affect stores the most.
You’ve all shown yourselves to be invested and interested in the business by making suggestions, sending in queries, or asking to be involved in sessions in the future, so we’d like you to attend and get involved. Please feel free to share this in your Area, with your AM for them to spread further, or to anyone else you know who may be interested. Hours will be credited for your time, so your store won’t be left short-changed, and we’ll be able to help with accommodation if you’re traveling long distance, though we can’t unfortunately help with travel.
HackTheMidlands 3.0
03 Nov - 10:00 AM
Birmingham, United Kingdom
HackTheMidlands 3.0 is a 24-hour, inclusive hackathon being hosted in Birmingham on the 3rd/4th November 2018 at Millennium Point. We're super excited to be back for our 3rd iteration, and we'd love to have y'all join us!
But what is going to happen at the event?
Over the 24 hours, people aged 14+ of all skill levels (you don't have to be a professional or a student! Just be lovely, passionate and interested in tech!) will come together to share ideas, and create new and awesome projects! (Not sure what a hackathon is? MLH have a great explanation here). There'll also be fun minigames, challenges and free food/drink to make sure you have an absolutely wonderful time.
But I don't have any experience - I won't be any good!
Nonsense - Everyone has to start somewhere, and we will have mentors at the event to help you along. One of the most awesome qualities of hackathons is the sheer number of lovely people that you'll meet at them, so no matter your skill level or expertise, you'll always be able to have an awesome time, pick up loads of new skills, and make new friends!
Hackathon Challenge - Alder Hey Challenge - Gaming/Computing Challenge - 1st November 2018

Hackathon Challenge - Alder Hey Challenge - Gaming/Computing Challenge
Launch Day - 1st November 2018 (10am - 5pm)
Presentation and final day - 21st November 2018 (2pm - 4pm)
Tech Hub
You are invited to participate with this amazing opportunity to work with Alder Hey and a chance to contribute to their up and coming project.
Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and Alder Hey Children’s Charity are working together to create a world first, hospital-wide patient experience app that has the potential to revolutionise patient care across the NHS.
The ‘Alder Play’ app is set to totally transform the experience of children in hospital by bringing comfort, fun, reward and distraction to young patients, whilst also providing vital information to both them and their parents and carers.
Alder Play will feature gaming and augmented reality, providing entertainment but also much needed distraction for patients having procedures. A rewards scheme will also be used to encourage interacting with the app and rewarding patients for co-operating with their treatment. It will also have a digital map and detailed 360 images of the hospital enabling patients to explore and familiarise themselves with before their visit.
The app has been built by a London based developer ustwo, who have created an amazing interface that is now being tested within Alder Hey. We have been fortunate to have content for the app donated by a number of sponsors, including Hasbro, FACT, Jungle Interactive and StudioWide, a Liverpool based digital company.
The Challenge
Alder Hey would like to extend the invitation to Edge Hill Computer Science students. During the challenge you will work in teams of 5 to produce a range of games for children of primary school age. Your team will be given the overall theme and categories on the morning of the challenge.
A fantastic chance to get involved with an extracurricular project and if successfully picked Alder Hey will embed your game into their APP. What a fantastic thing to have on your CV!
Open to all from Computer Science. Places are limited be sure to secure your place via Eventbrite.
