  Everyone is invited to join our 24 hour non-stop hackathon looking at the challenging and exciting area of Financial Technology in partnership with major technology leaders (PWC, YBS and others). Join us for this event, work in a team and propose a concept, or build a prototype, or design a start-up. Our sponsors have provided a set of topics in the areas of financial tech, digital identity, security, and personal digital assistants. Once you've been allocated a team, you will have 24 hours to propose a great idea for a particular topic and produce an initial prototype. You will then present your idea to a judging panel on Sunday afternoon. A winning team will be chosen for each topic area. Throughout the event you will be given mentoring and support by research staff and engineers in designing and building your concept. Mentors will also be on hand to look at your CV and give you tips on employability etc. PRIZES The winning teams will each receive a £500 Amazon voucher.  TEAMS Teams will consist of 4 people, you can either register as a team or we can help you form a team at the reception event. We encourage multi-disciplinary teams to give you the best the chance of success. There are no restrictions on who can take part (other than age requirement of 18+). The event is open to individuals with an interest in computer programming, students from universities across the country (undergraduates and postgraduates) and staff from the universities in Leeds. We'd also love to see a great mix of disciplines, although having someone with a computing background on your team will help. Are meals provided? Yes, at the reception on Friday we'll provide a buffet. On Saturday we'll provide lunch and dinner. On Sunday we'll provide breakfast and lunch. There will be coffee and soft drinks available throughout as well. There is not cost for the food or drink. Do we need to register as a team? No, teams will consist of 4 people. All members of the team should register individually before the event and you can let us know on Friday that you've got team sorted. If you haven't got a team yet, we'll help you either form or join a team during the reception on Friday and Saturday morning. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? Yes, hackathon participants must be over 18 as the event runs throughout Saturday night. What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event? After 5PM the University Edge and Multi-Storey car parks are open to the public. Payment is made before exiting. No, you can either present a concept or form a team with people who can build a prototype with you. Multi-disciplinary teams are often most effective. Do we go home on Friday evening after the welcome reception? Yes, after the welcome reception the hackathon kicks off on Saturday morning and then runs through the night until Sunday afternoon.

Machine learning, data science, and data analytics techies in and around Sheffield! You're invited to participate in The Rolls-Royce Manufacturing Hackathon. You'll be challenged to design and build an artificial intelligence (AI) solution that automates inspection, trend detection and measurement adjustments in the inspection process of aero-engine manufacture. Collaborate and compete to win the £10,000 first prize.

Leeds City Centre Network resilience hackathon – by invitation only On Tuesday 10th July Yorkshire Water will be hosting a brand new hackathon focusing on optimising our networks to predict our ever unpredictable weather patterns. We would like to invite you to this exclusive, closed event as part of a unique opportunity to get into the heart of Yorkshire Water and develop new tools and insights that can pin-point the optimal location of over 8,000 network monitors throughout our region. The event will take place at an exclusive location in Leeds City Centre and participants will get the chance to interrogate multiple datasets, from include pollution incident reports, CSO telemetry data & sewer flooding incident history. Geographic identifiers will be included via secure data transfer methods with GDPR protection provided by a licence arrangement developed by the ODI. The event, jointly facilitated by our partners the Open Data Institute (ODI Leeds) and with Yorkshire Water Directors and Jonson Cox, OFWAT chair in attendance, will present a unique perspective to our data and offer brand new insights into how new technology can unlock the secrets of our network infrastructure; something we are all keen to harness in this new world of innovation. Saturday 9 June10:00 - 17:30ODI Leeds, Munro House 'Digital skills' does not mean 'computer wizard.' In a fast and technologically-driven world, most jobs require at least basic IT skills - using email, spreadsheets, word processing, navigating websites, uploading pictures, etc. Jobs in the 'digital' or 'tech' sector require more advanced skills, from knowing programming languages and coding to data analysis and machine learning. There is also the matter of jobs in these sectors that aren't 'techie' but still need appropriate skill and knowledge of digital systems. For example, popular jobs like content marketing and social media management require you to be savvy with computers, mobiles, and more PLUS you also need to be creative with copy and photos. This is a jobs landscape currently without any kind of map or guide. Not for long! We are very pleased to be hosting a hackathon with Tech Nation to explore the data they have collected about skills jobs, and demand for these, accross the North of England. Earlier this year, Henri Egle Sorotos of Tech Nation published this article about the 'North-North' divide when it came to jobs. He found that a greater proportion of digital tech jobs were posted in Greater Manchester compared to our parts of the North. The data he used for this article, plus other datasets collected in the last 12 months, will be used for the hackathon and available to anyone who joins us on Saturday 9th June. Further details about the data can be found on this Google Doc. We also welcome other organisations to bring their own datasets about the digital jobs market. ODI Leeds will host the hackathon at their beautiful, naturally-lit innovation space in a well-connected part of Leeds. Easy to get to by foot, bus and train. Increasing amounts of data exists about us, but data literacy is not widespread. How can personalised video stories be crafted to present data to the public in an inclusive and engaging manner? What stories can be told with data and how will you craft a data-driven narrative? Personalized and interactive documentaries such as Do Not Track, and Netwars demonstrate the potential for video based storytelling to tackle substantive topics such as privacy, the web economy and cyberwarfare. This will be a hands-on session building working prototypes of data-driven video stories and developing innovative scenarios and use-cases. Over the course of the weekend we will devise new ways to support public engagement with data using this emergent medium. Presented by the EPSRC funded Perspective Media project (Personalised Video Storytelling for Data Engagement), the event will provide a space for exploring how personalized, interactive video stories can provide more accessible, informative and pleasurable ways for the public to engage with the increasing amounts of data that exist about us in modern society. There will be concept development and feedback sessions with experts in interactive media to help you create something exciting. There is also the possibility for ongoing support and development of a successful prototype created during the hackathon.
