Focus Inside: ethical tech panel
19 Apr - 06:30 PM
London, United Kingdom
Ethical tech panel:  How can we design tech to help us be better humans? Tech "hacking" our brains has become a hot topic. Last year, two former Facebook executives publicly accused the social network in manipulating and destroying our society. Designers are responsible for how millions of people will behave on a daily basis. Could we design technology in a more sustainable, mindful way to make us better people, and not steal human time and attention? Join the panel of experts to talk about ethics of tech, as part of Focus Inside. Focus Inside is a unique pop-up event that explores our relationships with our devices and how they are changing us. The project is supported by Westminster Council and Create Church Street Fund and is part of Focus Inside mindful tech festival (see more info and full program at www.focus-inside.com). Program: 1. presentation of the results of ethical tech hackathon 2. 5-minute exercise to get you out of the mind and into your body by Linzy Nakorn, BitterSuite 3. panel on ethical tech. Should we consider ethics when we design technology? How can we change business models, so that designers are not incentivized to hunt for our attention? Panelists are: Aleksandra Melnikova, experience design director, Radley Yeldar and Bill Tribble, lead UX designer, General Assembly instructor - presenting results of hackathon David Asfaha, data scientist, Capgemini - Is data becoming "weaponized"? Silja Litvin, Psychologist and Founder of PsycApps, Digital Mental Health - Mental health and technology Adam Smith, senior technologist in fintech sector - Inherent bias in AI Linzy Nakorn, performer, producer and choreographer, BitterSuite - How tech is impacting the Body's natural instincts
Focus Inside: An ethical tech design hackathon
    19 Apr - 11:00 AM
    London, United Kingdom
Focus Inside: An ethical tech design hackathon how we use our devices. When: Thursday, 19 April 2018, 11.00am - 6.00 pm, followed by a panel discussion Where: 35-37 Church Street NW8 8ES London (nearest tube: Edgware Road, Marylebone) Designing lives of future generations Idea: Focus Inside is a unique pop-up event that explores our relationships with our devices and how they are changing us. As part of it, we are organizing a hackathon about how and what we design to make a positive impact. It’s our phone, not our partner or children, that we touch first thing when we wake up and the last thing before going to sleep. We are becoming ever dependent on technology, but does it make us better humans? Do our smart devices make us smarter? With opportunities to connect with anyone, did we become more compassionate and attentive to others? With the abundance of information at our fingertips, are we more knowledgeable? Designers are responsible for how millions of people will behave on a daily basis. The boundary between a useful service and an addictive, time consuming black hole, is very fragile. Lately we’ve seen this responsibility often abused, when users are encouraged to stay online longer hours and mindlessly click on links and videos.   We would like to see technology designed in a more sustainable, mindful way. So that instead of making a user addicted, it empowers her. Could we use design to make us better people, and not steal human time and attention? Could we find a suitable business model? Some of the questions we want to find answers to during this hackathon are: -          How could we have more tech to help people get back to real lives, not lose their time and attention online? -          What could new business models in the economy of distraction look like? -          How can we redefine KPIs, if we don’t design anymore for time spent online? -          What does a balanced use of devices look like from a designer viewpoint? What should and shouldn’t we optimize for?   The project is supported by Westminster Council and Create Church Street Fund and is part of Focus Inside mindful tech festival (more info at www.focus-inside.com). Are you feeling passionate about changing how our relationships with technology redefine our lives? Are you concerned about its impact on others? Do you think that it could help us be more human? Do you have background in design, arts, programming, project or product management, online business and advertising, or just have some fresh ideas about how this could be done? Then we’d love to see you at the hackathon! It’s a unique opportunity to work with like-minded passionate people and create something that can truly enable change. Best ideas will be featured on www.consciously-digital.com website and in the national press. Facilitators: Bill Tribble is a user experience design team leader, General Assembly design instructor, and musician. He's been working in design, education, and technology for over 2 decades, with everything from big companies (Canon, Discovery) to tiny startups. He's just back from working in Japan for a couple of years, and keen to make an impact on making technology more humane (and start a new band!) Aleks Melnikova is an experience design director bringing the power of connected disciplines into design, research and team management. Being trained in arts and service design is a combination that enables her to make any project her playground by creating new tools and approaches, frequently challenging the existing structures. Working both client side and agency side, in the last 10 years she has led and successfully delivered experiences for clients like VISA, SKY, Aviva, VSO, GSK, BA and others. When not at work, she collaborates with a few UK universities, organizes UX events and writes about the connections between literature, art and design.

It suggests that by using sensors and building an infrastructure around us, practically any object can be networked. As experience designers it is our duty to ensure that the human needs are at the core of the design process. If a product doesn't solve a real human need, what's the point of fancy connected technology? In this event we are asking what realistically need to be connected. We will be speaking with designers working on the cutting edge of IOT, leveraging the technology to offer more connected homes, intelligent reactive medical devices and smarter cities. Join us to explore how by utilising this technology, we are able to bring humans and computers closer than ever before, to design seamless experiences which will transform how we interact with the world around us forever.  Check out the speakers below. With space for 150, we would like to invite you straight from work. With doors opening at the earlier time of 6pm, introductions starting at 6.20 and talks starting at 6.30pm, please aim to arrive on time! We've got some great talks lined up, offering excellent case studies too, so please book now to avoid disappointment. Hiring managers are welcome, and if you are interested in hosting or sponsoring an event with us (and would like to get a taste of what we do), please get in touch with Myles McMorrow and we can hold you a ticket! Tweet the event @TheUXCrunch and let’s get the ball rolling! We look forward to seeing you soon!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------AGENDA 6.00pm - 6.20pm: Registration, Drinks and Networking 6.20pm - 6.30pm - Introductions 6.30pm – 7.30pm: Intro and Talks 1 & 2 7.30pm - 7.40pm - Short Break 7.40pm - 8.40pm: Talk 3 and Panel Discussion/Q&A 8.40pm: Pizza & Networking before leaving. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TALKS & DISCUSSIONS Avril O'Neil - Co-founder & Creative Director @ Ding Products The Smart (Enough) Home As a company creating smart products, we are part of the current smart-home boom. Ding’s aim is to make objects that respond to a real user need or desire, and not gadgets driven by the capabilities of technology.  When is a smart product smart enough for the user? Avril has worked in the creative industry since 2008, and focuses on the combination of design and technology and how this can be applied to products, installations and education. Avril specialises in concept generation, design, development and agricultural research. Avril has previously worked with clients including Arup, Folk, Samsung, ITV and The National Maritime Museum. Since graduating from Goldsmiths University, Avril has worked as a designer with Kin (kin-design.com) for several years, before starting her own design consultancy ONN Studio (onnstudio.com) with her partner John Nussey. Most recently Avril and John have launched their smart homes company Ding (dingproducts.com) which concentrates on making subtle objects that are smart enough to make your life easy but always blend with the home. Their first product to market is the Ding Smart Doorbell.  Tim Daines - UX and Service Designer (previously) @ Cambrige Consultants Smart Health: User Experience for ubiquitous digital health design Healthcare innovation is messy. It is not what people are natural at doing in well structured disciplines, and requires working with people who already live in a healthcare system. Whilst the heralding of being able to make healthcare more intelligent through the use of Internet of Things, how is user experience design affected when you are no longer just designing for rectanglar screens? Tim will present on the challenges faced with designing connected drug delivery systems in healthcare, where frictionless experiences to improve the management of diseases for patients and stakeholders are the benchmark for success. Tim’s career into connected things (before it became the Internet of Things) began in 1999, where he worked with connected industrial printers to automate cosmetic package printing for Procter and Gamble. Over the next 10 years Tim developed and deployed various network services to support the operations of housing associations, banks and global brands, as well as take time out to teach students and share his experiences of the real-world. As of 2015, Tim has come full circle back to his connected device roots, delivering IoT UX and Service Design work for global, blue chip and startup organisations in the following areas - education, ecommerce, government, medtech, telecomms and energy organisations. Tim has also contributed to a number of publications, presented talks and workshops to aspiring designers at City University, UX Cambridge 2017, Mobile UX London 2017, and won a British Media (2016) and two iF Design (2018) awards. In Tim’s own time, he mentors others at hackathons about how human behaviour informs the design of connected systems. He is an avid traveller and makes the time to travel to various continents, where he forfils his passion for photography and storytelling. Priya Prakash - Founder @ D4SC (Design for Social Change) People + iOT = Smarter Cities that work and “do no evil” The smart city iOT landscape is littered with ambitious technology pilots/services, which have either failed to take off, not had sustainable business models, lack data ethics and are coupled with low user adoption as the experience sucks. Many are iOT based data driven solutions which lack real engagement with the people who will be using these services and do not successfully address the trust and privacy concerns which lead to a vicious low adoption cycle. This leads to low awareness and results in loss of impact, funding, revenue and political backing. But most importantly, fulfilling a real human need. The business case for doing it right leads to better adoption and a rollout of new iOT services which are actually scalable and result in recurring revenue. This talk explores the what, how and why of co-creating ethical, data driven IOT services, with people at their core for a more human future and not just 'traditional' smart cities. Priya Prakash is a designer at and founder of London based award-winning D4SC - Design for Social Change Ltd -The applied urban innovation studio, which develops collaborative products and services combining human and machine intelligence to co-create smarter cities with people.  Changify #SmarterStreets D4SC’s intelligent people-powered decision making platform to improve public infrastructure got awarded by Innovate UK to pilot in Plymouth with Amey Ferrovial. It resulted in reducing average road inspection costs by 22%, increasing citizen satisfaction and contractor responsiveness by 19.8% and is being scaled across UK and Asia. Prakash is on ‘Tech City Insider 100’, IBM’s People for Smarter Cities and featured in FT, Sunday Times, BBC, Wired, Guardian and the Queen’s 2017 Honours list for award winning work in Chinese smart cities using data to improve public safety.  Prior to D4SC, Priya was Head of Mobile Phone User Experience at Nokia where she led the global design team to launch affordable smart phones - Nokia Asha in 144 countries. At BBC, she was lead-designer and co-inventor of iPlayer with joint patents.

                  What is Ageing @Google Academy
                  12 Apr - 12:00 PM
                  London, United Kingdom
The word ageing can mean different things... living for many years, growing wise and mature - and also senescence, the mysterious process of deterioration in later life that leads to a gradual decline in our health, late-life diseases and eventually the ending of our lives. Thanks to advances in the treatment of infectious disease, people are living longer now, such that senescence is now the main cause of disease worldwide. But unlike infectious disease, the causes of ageing (senescence) remain poorly understood by scientists. Recent advances in the science of ageing are starting to reveal the causes of ageing, and to suggest treatments that could begin to stave off the ravages of senescence, which would allow us (or at least, future generations) to maintain better health in later life. Speaker: David Gems, Professor of Biogerontology, Institute of Healthy Ageing, University College London David Gems is a British geneticist and biogerontologist. He is Professor of Biology of Ageing at University College London where he is also Deputy Director of the Institute of Healthy Ageing. Panel discussion: Mary Matthews Founder of Memrica Memrica is a tech for good company helping active people remember what matters most, to boost confidence, maintain social connections and prolong independence. Thomas Tredinnick CEO of Ally Smart Care Ally, the smart home device for caregivers, keeps families connected and monitors changes in seniors' routines to detect danger or decline in health.
