Hackathon 2015! The iTag Hackathon is a computer programming and game design competition which teams participate internationally or locally here at the host Nottingham Trent University. This hackathon is part of an IEEE academic conference called the Interactive Technologies and Games Conference (iTag) [Link]. Goal The idea is to create a game (in the most general meaning of the idea) around the Hackathon theme* (secret: which will be revealed before the 72 hour period).  *The aim of the hackathon is to develop an application that can benefit an educational environment or provide enhanced accessibility to a specified user base. For those that wish to take part, all they need to do is register as either an individual or team on our website. All participants can either take part at a designated venue or remotely. Voting  Voting by the iTag IEEE conference delegates will take place, winning and runner-up teams will be acknowledged officially by NTU and iTag. Winning team is also awarded a total cash prize of £250.  When? The Hackathon is taking place from Tuesday, October 20, 9 am until Thursday the October 22, 3 pm (GMT). The 3 day Hackathon programming challenge will be held in Nottingham Trent Pavilion Building in rooms 121, 122, 123. However, on the third day, presentations are held at GameCity. Ada Lovelace Hackathon
    14 Nov - 10:00 AM
    Oxford , United Kingdom
Celebrate Ada Lovelace’s 200th birthday in style by joining the Ada Lovelace hackathon! We’ll be using the equipment and expertise of the Oxford Hackspace to create new physical computing projects, inspired by her works. We’ll have access to 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics, CNC machines, and much more. Projects suggested so far include: Laser-cutting cogs and carrying arms to build the adding mechanism of the Analytical Engine. Building a card reader. Using a card reader to make other things happen - a music box, bells, whistles, puppets, or automata. A new robot version of the “calculus of the nervous system”, or 3D printing of some or all of the real neuronal network of a nematode worm. A music machine. Other things that Ada was known for include the Bernoulli numbers, her interest in gambling, ‘Flyology’, and her prediction of computer-generated music: “Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.” Every level of skill is welcome!

        BrumHack
        24 Oct - 10:30 AM
        Birmingham, United Kingdom
BrumHack is a 24 hour student hackathon in Birmingham, running as a hack in the Major League Hacking UK Fall season. This will be BrumHack 3.0! Attendees will have 24 hours (from 12:00 Saturday) to build something awesome, either in hardware or software. Hacks can optionally use sponsor APIs and platforms, and at the end of the 24 hour window people will have time to show either their hack, if it’s ready and working, or otherwise to talk a little about their ideas or what technology they used, what worked and what they had trouble with. Hacks can be made alone or in teams of any size, but teams bigger than 4 people won't qualify for prizes. Teams can be decided at any point before submission and we’ll be having a session for matching up teams before we start, so if you’re unsure of who to work with, don’t be deterred. The event is free for attendees & we’ll have food and refreshments paid for by sponsors (first round announced shortly), as well as prizes for various categories of hacks.   FAQs   Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event? You must bring a valid university student ID card to the event. You must also be a full-time university student. We can't permit under 18s due to child safeguarding restrictions. What should I bring? You should bring a laptop to hack on, power extensions, and any other gadget you might need.  Is there a Code of Conduct? Yes. See http://static.mlh.io/docs/mlh-code-of-conduct.pdf
Register your interest: The Oxford Energy Innovation Weekend - Fuel Poverty Hackathon
          23 Oct - 05:00 PM
          Oxford, United Kingdom
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO OCTOBER 2015! THE NEW DATE WILL BE DEFINED SOON! The aim of this event is to get members of the student and alumni community working together on specific, immediate problems, and to come up with working prototype(s); supporting the on-going efforts in the field. The hackathon, on fuel poverty, will gather students from across the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes to develop innovative solutions. The theme of ‘fuel poverty’ encompasses a broad range of technical, economic and societal challenges. This will be The Oxford Launchpad’s third hackathon, following the successful Ebola hackathon in November 2014. The hackathon, a fusion of the words “hack” and “marathon”, is an intensive, problem-solving event lasting typically 24 to 48 hours. Originally hackathons had coding and tech at their core (hence the name); however these days the term is used more widely, to denote the event’s nature and format, and the focus on innovation at speed. Tech continues to form an important component of many hackathons, but hackathons are no longer the realm of coders alone. They also seek to address interlinked social, economic and technical challenges. While British billionaires have doubled their wealth in recent years, 10% of the population suffer from fuel poverty. Fuel poverty is when people are unable to afford to heat their homes properly . They may have to choose between keeping warm and feeding their families. They may also suffer poor health and winter death due to cold homes. Fuel poverty is caused by a mix of low incomes (not having enough money to heat your home or afford energy efficient improvements), poor housing conditions (houses that leak heat, guzzle energy and cost more to keep warm), and high energy prices. We already identified some possible solutions, but the problems persist. We need breakthrough ideas and action to eradicate it in a way which also meets our carbon reduction targets. Crucially, the output of the hackathon is not to just generate ideas, but to create demonstrable solutions within the hackathon timeframe, so register your interest whatever your background and be part of an innovating team!
