TechNation & ODI Leeds: #SkillsSkillsSkills - Digital Jobs Dashboard Hackathon
09 Jun - 10:00 AM
Leeds, United Kingdom
Saturday 9 June10:00 - 17:30ODI Leeds, Munro House
'Digital skills' does not mean 'computer wizard.' In a fast and technologically-driven world, most jobs require at least basic IT skills - using email, spreadsheets, word processing, navigating websites, uploading pictures, etc. Jobs in the 'digital' or 'tech' sector require more advanced skills, from knowing programming languages and coding to data analysis and machine learning. There is also the matter of jobs in these sectors that aren't 'techie' but still need appropriate skill and knowledge of digital systems. For example, popular jobs like content marketing and social media management require you to be savvy with computers, mobiles, and more PLUS you also need to be creative with copy and photos.
This is a jobs landscape currently without any kind of map or guide.
Not for long!
We are very pleased to be hosting a hackathon with Tech Nation to explore the data they have collected about skills jobs, and demand for these, accross the North of England.
Earlier this year, Henri Egle Sorotos of Tech Nation published this article about the 'North-North' divide when it came to jobs. He found that a greater proportion of digital tech jobs were posted in Greater Manchester compared to our parts of the North. The data he used for this article, plus other datasets collected in the last 12 months, will be used for the hackathon and available to anyone who joins us on Saturday 9th June.
Further details about the data can be found on this Google Doc.
We also welcome other organisations to bring their own datasets about the digital jobs market.
ODI Leeds will host the hackathon at their beautiful, naturally-lit innovation space in a well-connected part of Leeds. Easy to get to by foot, bus and train. As always, it will be a great atmosphere with great food, good company, and plenty of energy.
Filmmaking hackathon for data-driven storytelling
18 May - 07:00 PM
York, United Kingdom
Increasing amounts of data exists about us, but data literacy is not widespread. How can personalised video stories be crafted to present data to the public in an inclusive and engaging manner? What stories can be told with data and how will you craft a data-driven narrative?
Personalized and interactive documentaries such as Do Not Track, and Netwars demonstrate the potential for video based storytelling to tackle substantive topics such as privacy, the web economy and cyberwarfare.
This will be a hands-on session building working prototypes of data-driven video stories and developing innovative scenarios and use-cases. Over the course of the weekend we will devise new ways to support public engagement with data using this emergent medium.
Presented by the EPSRC funded Perspective Media project (Personalised Video Storytelling for Data Engagement), the event will provide a space for exploring how personalized, interactive video stories can provide more accessible, informative and pleasurable ways for the public to engage with the increasing amounts of data that exist about us in modern society. The hackathon is part of this wider research project and offers us a chance to learn more about how individuals make data-driven stories. Project partners
BBC R&D
The Open Data Institute
The Digital Catapult
City of York Council
BAFTA-winning immersive media producer Catherine Allen
Who should attend?
Anyone interested in data-driven, non-linear and innovative modes of storytelling. Do you produce video content to tell engaging stories? Do you understand challenges associated with data literacy and accessibility? Are you a coding ninja? Open data maestro? A Data wrangler? Do you know how to extract patterns and insights from large datasets? If so, we want you along!
In particular we encourage:
Data Journalists
User Experience & Interaction Designers
Filmmakers
Data Scientists & Data Engagement specialists
Students of Interactive Media / Data Journalism /Film & Television Production
Why you should attend
This will be an exciting opportunity to experiment with an emergent form of interactive data-driven storytelling and get hands on experience of using object based media tools and libraries created by the University of York and BBC R&D.
There will be concept development and feedback sessions with experts in interactive media to help you create something exciting. There is also the possibility for ongoing support and development of a successful prototype created during the hackathon.
Further details
All meals will be provided throughout the course of the weekend. As well as lots of coffee and snacks to keep you going!
If you have any questions about the event or would like to discuss any specific requirements please email shauna.concannon@york.ac.uk.
***PLEASE NOTE YOU NEED TO BE 18 OR OVER TO ATTEND THIS EVENT.***
Team GB versus Team USA Hackathon - with support by technical collaborators The Stellar Development Foundation
21 Apr - 08:30 PM
Leeds, United Kingdom
Decenture with support from Technical Collaborator Stellar Development Foundation
Hackathons aim to bring diffuse skillsets together. We invite students to join us to develop ideas into prototypes, expand your knowledge on blockchain and be associated to Decenture’s daring goal of reducing students’ debt.
Decenture and The Stellar Development Foundation are bringing together the student community, universities, businesses and the technology industry to advance the education ecosystem.
Team GB competes against Team USA on April 21st and 22nd.
Students are invited to register here for a chance to compete and win Stellar Lumens.
Business Case: smart contract
Government finances George’s studies at University A, under the condition that those funds can only be assigned to the specific course George registered to attend. The Government cannot guarantee that George will complete his course, so the Government assigns StudentCoinTM to University A but requires they are held in escrow and released each semester upon the condition that George attends class.
University A needs to be paid 1 semester in advance. Assuming 2 semesters per academic year.
The Government would like to build-in a recovery mechanism so that if George doesn’t attend more than 50% of his registered classes, the StudentCoinTM can be recovered. This way, the tokens won’t be lost forever.
Smart contract will include multi-signature, lock periods and funds release trigger confirmation.
Part a) Design front-end UI.
Part b) Design back-end for business logic of smart contracts on Stellar network or Ethereum blockchain
Part c) Merge front and back ends; connect HTML browser to backend
I’m not a student, can I get involved?
You will not be allowed to participate in the event. If you’re looking to mentor (i.e. someone with technical skills who’d be willing to help out participants during the weekend), please visit our website www.decenture.com and register to be a mentor. A Decenture team member will contact you immediately.
How much will Decenture Hackathon cost me?
This event is free! UK students will convene at a location in Leeds. US students will participate remotely.
What if I don’t know code?
You’re still welcome. Many skillsets are required for dApp design and build on the blockchain: project management, design, creativity as well as technical skills. Don’t worry about it, you’ll find something to work on.
What do I need to bring?
You’ll need: Your college photo ID, a laptop and charger. If you do not hold a Student ID, you will NOT be allowed to participate.
Arrive early at 10.15am as we will create teams (of 4 recommended) during the hackathon, and generate some amazing creations along the way.
What can I win?
Thought you’d never ask although this is more about collaboration, learning and exploring and making great connections. But since we’re talking about winning, we’ve got that covered too. The Stellar Development Foundation is graciously rewarding the winning team with Stellar Lumens tokens.
What next?
Register here using your student email address and you will receive full details and invite to join the dedicated hackathon slack channel. You will also receive information about the event itself and how to qualify.
