What are the aims? The three-day hackathon will bring together people to work on life science-related computational projects. The hackathon is an excellent opportunity to improve your coding skills, network with people in your field, or to try out that project you've always wanted to work on but never found the time. Alternatively, you may want to work as part of a team in a field that is completely new to you.What should I do?It 's really up to you. All that we ask is that you work on a computational project with a life sciences focus. Ideally, the project should be self-contained i.e. started in the hackathon and hopefully you will have had time in the three days to have made some progress. Many of the participants last year came up their own ideas for a project and worked on that for the three days.  Alternatively, you may want to work on one of our proposed projects. Our sponsors and project mentors have come up with a number of projects in which you are completely free to participate.  Or maybe, one of the hackathon participants is already working on a project that interest you.  What skills will I need? The hackathon is aimed at people of all skill sets, from people new to coding through to experts in their respective fields. This is a chance to work in a friendly collaborative atmosphere and have some fun. What do I need to bring?Just you and a laptop. (We do have a small number of spare laptops available if you are unable to bring a laptop for yourself). How much is it?Taking part costs £30 for three days. (That´s just £10 per day.  Although hackathon T-Shirts  are not available to new sign-ups at this late stage, food and drink is included as is the opportunity to spend your time in the wonderful Centre for Computing History). This year's RDKit User Group Meeting will take place from 19-21 September in Cambridge, UK and is being hosted by Andreas Bender at the University of Cambridge. The meeting will take place in the Department of Chemistry on Lensfield Rd. Days 1 and 2: Talks, lightning talks, roundtable(s), discussion, poster sessions, and talktorials.  Day 3: Hackathon There will also be, of course, social activities. This year we have the special opportunity to have the dinner on the 19th in the Old Library of Pembroke College. I can't wait for that. :-) We are looking for people who are willing to do presentations, talktorials or posters on the first two days. Language teachers, techies in the UK! If you're interested in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), then you're invited to participate in the Cambridge ESOLTHON. At this one-and-a-half day hackathon event, you'll collaborate with like-minded individuals to create a new portal that improves digital resources for teachers of entry-level English as a foreign language. If you're interested in the democratic process, then Shout Out UK invites you to participate in the Young People in Local Politics Hackathon. Join us for Western Europe’s first quantum computing hackathon! Quantum computers have the potential to solve certain problems dramatically faster than conventional computers, with applications in areas such as machine learning, finance, drug discovery and cryptography. Try out your quantum programming skills at our hackathon, where you'll have the chance to run your quantum algorithms on both quantum simulators and a real 8-qubit quantum computer, as provided by Rigetti (via the cloud). Experience helps but is not required - our experts will teach you the basics!Winners will be announced at 2pm, followed by pizza!Technical details:Your task will be to develop the best quantum algorithm to solve a quantum chemistry problem that is in general intractable for conventional computers. This amounts to solving an interesting optimisation problem, where the cost function (provided by us) is calculated on a real quantum computer and is exponentially difficult to simulate classically.You will be expected to bring your own laptop, and some experience coding in Python in desirable, but knowledge of quantum computing and quantum chemistry is not needed.
