SDGeneration: Hackathon for the UN SDGs
12 Feb - 08:30 AM
London, United Kingdom
The Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP), UCL and the London International Development Centre (LIDC), are hosting a joint hackathon led by Darshita Gillies CEO and Co-Founder of Maanch.                                                              Are we prepared for 2030? This event will galvanise youth energy in the UK and Commonwealth nations on delivering and monitoring progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, we have identified four interrelated and mission-critical SDGs as pivotal to realising sustainable prosperity: SDG 2 Zero Hunger, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 8 Decent work and SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities. We plan to use these four SDGs as the basis for our global city hackathon to give participants a deep understanding of current statuses, implementing partners, funders, and strategies to inspire SDG attainment generally, and specifically with a youth lens.                                                                        The challenge 1) Analyse UN Data to understand where London is positioned with regard to the 4 mission critical interrelated SDGs.  2) Hack solutions for progress towards goals 2, 4, 8 & 11 in a global city of your teams choosing, and present strategies to the group. The hackathon intends to initiate cross cultural learning and collaboration among the international student community.                                                                          Eligibility Everyone with passion for finding sustainable development solutions is encouraged to apply to this Hackathon. We encourage diversity (gender, skill sets, backgrounds, both professionals and university students, etc.). You do not need to have technical skills to participate. We encourage diverse backgrounds to apply, including open source developers, graphic designers, product managers, researchers, data analysts, civic innovators, subject matter experts in the fields of health, education, poverty alleviation, social change, environment, and other community services, etc. Participation in the Hackathon is free                                                                   Why the UN SDGs? There are 17 SDGs with 169 targets. To realise the SDGs it is estimated that the world will need to invest between 7-10% of global annual GDP per year.  But don’t let this put you off! The SDGs are also the first comprehensive plan for the whole of humanity to flourish within the means of the planet. This makes them a good framework for creative solutions to global challenges that have environmental and social impact at their core.                                                                        Why attend? Networking with like-minded students, entrepreneurs and academics The opportunity to present winning solutions at the IGP/LIDC conference, SDGeneration: A Citizen Science Movement", on the 13th February 2019 in front of an audience 100 guests from the philanthropic, higher education, funding, governmental and NGO worlds  Free ticket to Fast Forward 2030 entrepreneur speaker event  Event hashtag: #SDGeneration "SDGeneration: A Citizen Science Movement" This hackathon is part of the IGP and LIDC February event series exploring the support needed in order to achieve the SDGs, and the contribution citizen-science can make towards their evaluation.  Join us on 13th February 2019 at the Amnesty International Offices in East London for our main event in the series, the one-day joint conference "SDGeneration: A Citizen Science Movement".

          Hack The South 2019
          09 Feb - 09:00 AM
          Southampton, United Kingdom
36h hackathon in the beautiful south of England. Come hack with us on your craziest ideas! Mighty hackers and tech lovers, the time has come to prove the world who's the best hacker in South England! This is the moment that all HackaSotoners have been waiting for since the beginning of the academic year. If you've attended a hackathon before, you know how much fun they are. If you haven't, come and we'll show you! HackaSoton and Fish on Toast are inviting you to the biggest hackathon of the year: Hack The South! We're calling out for people with ingenious thinking, rockstar programming skills, curious beginners, designers, or even business heads, to join us for an entire weekend of hacking. Here's how it works: if you have an idea, you come over and pitch it to form a team; if you don't know what to work on, join others and lead your team to glory (i.e. winning the hackathon). If you're a pro, you'll surely find something challenging to work on. However, even if you're just starting or only know Java (hey, if that's what they teach at uni...) don't fear—people with no prior coding experience managed to deliver awesome results in past hackathons. We know, we know: "hacking" the world is not an easy job. FOOD and REFRESHMENTS will be provided throughout the weekend, as always. There's that quote... Stay Hungry Stay Foolish... well, not at our hackathon ;)We are very excited about this and we are expecting to see some amazing ideas come to life by the end of the hackathon. Our amazing Gold sponsors are Deutsche Bank, American Express, and Hunter Bond. We also have ASV (Bronze Sponsor), MLH, Sticker Mule, GitHub, and The University of Southampton on our side. TICKET TYPES Hacker: Participants who can code, design, build, hack, crack, or otherwise do everything they can to complete a project. Designer: Participants whose main skillset is in design and would like to focus on that at the hackathon. Entrepreneur: Participants whose main skillset is in business / entrepreneurship and would like to focus on that at the hackathon. General Admission: Anyone who would like to see the final presentations on Sunday. This does not include participation at the event. INFO There is more information on our website at hackthesouth.co.uk. For any questions please email us at hack@soton.ac.uk. After you buy a ticket, we will send you regular reminders and more informations closer to the event date. FAQ Q: What is a hackathon?A: During a hackathon you have 24 to 48 hours to work with a small team on something new and exciting. You will compete with other teams, but in the end everyone is a winner! Q: What can I make?A: Anything! A website, an application or you can work with hardware as well! See below about hardware hacks. Q: Does this cost money?A: Nope. It is completely free! Q: Do I have to know how to code?A: No, as long as you want to work with others to help develop yours, or someone else’s idea! Generally, we need developers, designers and entrepreneurs. Q: Is food provided?A: More food will be there than you can imagine. Q: Can I sleep there?A: There will be a sleeping area, but you should bring a sleeping bag if you really wish to sleep. Q: Can I do hardware hacks?A: Yes of course! We will have some hardware on the day to hack on. We are also able to provide a variety of tools and other equipment. If there's something you particually want, get in touch after registration so we can try to get hold of it! Q: Can I bring _____?A: Probably, yes. For rather obscure, large or potentially dangerous items please get in touch first to check as we don't want to dissapoint on the day. Q: Do I need to have a team to join? A: It's up to you if you'd like to form a team before or at the event. We're happy either way, in fact it might be better for you if you already have a team as you'll already know each other. Q: How big are the teams going to be? A: We'd like teams to have 4-6 participants. Q: Are there any rules?A: To make sure everyone feels safe and welcome, all attendees, including hackers, volunteers, organizers, sponsors, judges, mentors, and MLH staff are required to follow the MLH Code of Conduct. For any problems please contact the organisers. Q: What are the judging criteria?A: Our judging criteria are Technical Innovation, Technical Difficulty, Design, Execution, Pitch. Q: Can I get an invitation letter for my visa application?A: Yes, please fill in this form and we'll reply in a few days. Q: Do you give any travel reimbursements?A: Unfortunately no, we do not have a budget for travel reimbursements this year. Q: Do I have to be a student to attend?A: We only accept students, to keep the competition fair for all participants. You can still join if you've recently graduated or haven't gone to university yet but are 18 or over. There are more FAQs on MLH's website.

We've been running this hackathon series for 5 years. Previous sponsors have included, Lloyds Banking Group, Thomson Reuters, IBM, Bank of Papua New Guinea 5th Element Group and ABT Associates.  For the 5th Annual London Blockchain Week we are looking to leverage blockchain to solve some of the global challenges concerning the health of women and children around the world.    CAN YOU CREATE TECHNOLOGY THAT IMPROVES LIVES? Access to healthcare, record keeping and preventable diseases are all issues that could be improved with technology. With mobile and IoT devices becoming more commonplace, there are a number of ways to tack the challenge of global health concerns for women and children.    HACKATHON RULES THE CHALLENGE: BLOCKCHAIN FOR BETTER WOMEN & CHILDREN'S HEALTH Teams will earn extra points if they have at least 1 woman on the team. Teams are encouraged to research some of the health challenges for women and children around the globe in order to better understand how a tech solution can have an immediate impact. While the projects can be ambitious, extra point will be given for how "ready-to-market" the concepts are. You could think of a new insurance model, record keeping process or health monitoring services. Just remember that the projects need to have an impact on the wellbeing of women and children. HACKATHON OVERVIEWTeams will form at the kick off event on Friday, February 8th at Cocoon Networks in Moorgate. Each team should have at least one developer and 1 woman. Coding isn't the only skill you need to win, we encourage strategist, consultants and people with health/pharma experience to get involved. On Saturday morning, teams will regroup and begin working on their project. You have until 11pm at the venue (This is not an overnight event). On Sunday morning we regroup again at Cocoon and polish up the concepts, prototypes and begin preparing presentations. At 2pm, judging and presentations commence and winners are announced shortly after all teams have presented around 5pm. Official Hackathon Challenge      Hackathon Scorecard  Winners will present at the 5th Annual London Blockchain Week. PRIZESThe winning team will recieve a £1000 cash prize and the 2nd place team will recieve £500. Winners will also present in front of the audience at London Blockchain Week 2019. The challenge partner may also reserve the right to explore projects further reguardless of winning.  The winning team will be judged on concept originality, feasibility, level of development, addressing the challenge, engagement and appropriate use of blockchain technology.
