Ada Lovelace Day 2018 - Contemporary Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon and Wikidata hackathon
09 Oct - 02:30 PM
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? Did you know that approximately only 17.75% of the biographies on Wikipedia relate to notable women?
Come join the international celebration day of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths for Ada Lovelace Day 2018.
A regular activity for Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) at the University of Edinburgh is the Wikipedia editing event or editathon. This year the focus is contemporary women in STEM who do not currently have Wikipedia pages. Discover the thrill of creatiing new, and editing published, content in the name of Women in STEM!
Contemporary Women in STEM Wikipedia edit-a-thon
2.30pm-3:30pm: Wikipedia editing training from Lorna Campbell, University of Edinburgh's Open Education Service.
3:30-5:30pm: Publishing quality Wikipedia articles related to Women in STEM!
There will be a synchronous Wikidata hackathon event also taking place.
Wikidata hackathon: Women in STEM
3.30pm-4pm: Wikidata training from Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh.
4-5pm: Hackathon - adding verifiable data about notable Women in STEM!
5pm-5:30pm: Visualising the newly added data.
Data on Women in STEM can be provided in an editable table – participants fill in blank columns with missing verifiable information.
E.g. Place of study, field of work, notable achievements…
At the end of the Wikipedia and Wikidata workshops we will tweet out the newly created pages and new data visualisations (maps, timelines etc.)
Bring your lunch, drop by for the training or stay the afternoon to pubish an entry!
Nominate your contemporary STEM heroine for consideration at the Wikipedia editathon Tuesday 9th October. This should only take 5-10 minutes and it will really help us to create new role models for young and old alike on the world’s go-to source for information, Wikipedia.
Submit your STEM heroine nomination (Google Form)
Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater understanding of Women in STEM!

BILHack #1 - Digital Identity and Blockchain Hackathon
29 Sep - 10:00 AM
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The inaugural BILHack will be held in Edinburgh at the Universitiy's Merchiston Campus across the 29 and 30 of September 2018.
The Blockpass Identity Lab is a multi-year research collaboration between the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, and Blockpass IDN, a self-sovereign digital identity and KYC compliance solution provider.
The lab invites participants from all backgrounds to come together and build things related to 'digital identity' and/or blockchain or other distributed ledger technologies, identifying use-cases and prototyping applications for these emerging and revolutionary advances.
Identity can mean many things - people have an identity, or perhaps they have multiple identities. Companies have an identity, and so do devices. Objects can have identities too, but so can doors, rooms, fictional characters, parts and materials, qualifications, and on and on... Blockchains gives us a way to manage and share identities in controlled, secure, and yet transportable, accessible and provable ways.
Themes and suggested focus within the overarching context will be advised ahead of the event but include identity & blockchain applications on food & drink, civic society and other use-cases. Blockpass, Wallet.Services, Eyecademy, and Uniqx will be providing the challenges, and a small prize will be presented to each team that best addresses each challenge question.
The event will begin at 10am Saturday 29 September until 7pm on Sunday 30 September. Jamming will start at noon Saturday and continue till 3pm Sunday.
To get to Room D2, turn right after entering through the main doors, head to the end of the corridor and use the lifts or stairs to go up two levels to floor D.
Details of judging and prizes will be announced at the start of the event.
There are 50 high-end PCs available, and plenty of room for laptops and other devices you may want to bring.
Food will be provided on Saturday evening, and some fruit and light snacks will be available from the wee hours of Sunday morning.
This event is for over 16s only.
Note, this is a no smoking campus, please use designated areas provided.

#ABHackathon
01 Sep - 10:00 AM
Dunoon, United Kingdom
Argyll and Bute’s very own technology hackathon-style event is happening in Dunoon this Autumn and we want 11-16 year olds with a passion for coding, a love of anything tech or who are ready to have some fun and play with some cool kit!
As part of the Year of Young People 2018 we wanted to put on an event for young people to try out some new technology, attend workshops with tutors from around the country and meet other young people with similar interests, all within Argyll and Bute.
Ever wondered how cyber criminals manage to hack into systems and cause huge problems for companies? Well at #ABHackathon you will have the chance to rob a fictional bank, crack customers’ passwords and compete with others to steal as much fake money as you can!
The event will be a single day packed with exciting workshops, on 1st September 2018 from 10am to 4pm at Dunoon Youth Centre - doors open from 9:30. It is open to any 11-16 year olds regardless of your computing expertise - there will be something new and fun for everyone; if you never coded before or even if you’re a master hacker!
To make it even better, the event is completely free to attend and we will arrange free transport to and from the event on the day if required - transport will be coordinated by Youth Services for young people travelling from Argyll & Bute who don't live locally to Dunoon.
Also, the most important thing at any hackathon, there will be free food!
Tesco Global Hackathon 2018
12 Jul - 10:00 AM
, United Kingdom
Welcome to Tesco Global Hackathon 2018!
The event will take place over 24hrs in the Czech Republic, India, Poland, Thailand and the UK. The Hackathon will start at 10am on 12th July in each location and finish 24hrs later, with the judging taking place shortly afterwards.
Each location will have a separate judging panel who will have the challenge of selecting one winner to progress to the grand final. In the following week, each regional winner will have the opportunity to pitch against the best of the best from other locations. Only one team can be victorious and therefore crowned the Tesco Global Hackathon Champions!
The theme this year is all about the future of retail - if you've got an idea that you think could revolutionise the way Tesco operates in the future, then get involved and show us! We welcome competitors from all backgrounds and disciplines and would actively encourage teams to have a mix of design and development skills.
Teams of up to five people can enter but feel free to register as an individual and we will help you find a team in your chosen location.
Join our Yammer page to stay up-to-date on Hackathon news and to receive lots of useful hints and tips!
Unbias hackathon
30 Jun - 09:30 AM
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Artificial Intelligence shapes digital services that have become central to our everyday lives. Online platforms leverage the power of AI to monetize our attention, with often unethical side-effects: our privacy is routinely breached, our perception of the world is seriously distorted, and we are left with unhealthy addictions to our screens and devices. The deep asymmetry of power between users and service providers, the opacity and unaccountability of the algorithms driving these services, and their exploitation by trolls, bullies and propagandists are serious threats to our well-being in the digital era. This hackathon invites participants to build tools to empower users in their online lives. The tools might address any relevant problem in this space, including (but not limited to) filter bubbles and fake news, biased and unaccountable algorithms, or the profit-driven metrics that guide these AI-powered services. Prizes will reward the three best contributions overall, and a special separate prize will be dedicated to the contribution that best addresses the issues faced by children. Children represent a third of global users, are among the most vulnerable groups, less armed to negotiate the asymmetry of power between themselves and the digital services they are using.
To participate please apply via the hackathon page on the Unbias Web site. You will be sent a code to get your eventbrite ticket. We are doing it this way to ensure we get a diverse audience.
