Big Queer Hackathon
26 Nov - 09:30 AM
Oxford, United Kingdom
No experience in coding? Interested in queer identities and social media?
To encourage new ways of thinking about and engaging with queerness and queer identities, the Hackathon will encourage creative engagement with the textual data gathered from the hashtag #Queer on Twitter. The event aims to give an introductory knowledge to python programming as well as bringing together people with different disciplinary backgrounds to analyse, process and display the data in imaginative ways, and discuss the meanings behind it.
The day will begin at 9:30am with an introduction to the project by the coordinators of the event, and an outline of the dataset. There will be a short speed-networking session to build teams around shared ideas. From 11:00am Siân Brooke (Oxford Internet Institute) will run an introductory workshop into python Programming for absolute beginners using Anaconda/Jupyter Notebooks (*please bring your own laptops*). Instructions on setting up the necessary software for this workshop will be sent out in advance, and if you have any difficulties, please come to the event early so that we can assist you. Over lunch, teams will assemble to look over the data, think of ways to analyse the tweets and perhaps request additional input or resources. At the end of the day (4:00pm), teams will pitch their projects to the group and a prize will be awarded to the best project. At the end of the day, we'll head to the pub to chat and discuss ideas.

SINC_HACK >17%
06 Oct - 08:00 AM
Brighton, United Kingdom
As part of Brighton Digital Festival and in honour of Ada Lovelace Day (9th October), Sussex Innovation Centre is hosting its first hackathon! The inaugural SINC_HACK is based around the theme of >17%.
Women make up just 17% of employees the UK tech sector, and only 17% of start-ups have female founders. The problem has many contributing factors, from the stigma around girls going into STEM subjects, to the gender pay gap, unconscious bias in the workplace and under-representation of women in management roles.
On Saturday 6th October, we'll welcome teams of developers, creatives, freelancers, students and researchers, who will work together over 12 hours to find and design innovative solutions to these challenges and more. There'll be several bitesize learning and creative exercises throughout the day, delivered by the Sussex Innovation team and our partners. Finally, food, drink and SINC_HACK goodie bags will be provided, as well as prizes for the winning team.
Places are limited so once you have registered your interest you will be sent an application form to complete. Successful applicants will then be sent a "hack pack" with full details of the day.
