    ScotChain17
    13 Oct - 09:00 AM
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
ScotChain16 last year saw Edinburgh host a hugely successful event attended by over 200 leading global Blockchain experts and business leaders debating and challenging the hype, the reality and ultimately, the best use cases. So where are we some twelve months on? The conversation around Blockchain is rapidly changing. We’re only now starting to understand this technology’s real, practical and full potential, and this means that there is still much to discover and explore. The buzz we experienced surrounding Blockchain technology has started to take a different tone and it is this different tone that ScotChain17 will explore. Last year, the conversation in the main revolved around financial services. This year we will see subject matter and topics of discussion going far beyond the traditional or well-known use cases. With this in mind, this year’s topic will be: So… what next for Blockchain? Scotland is at the heart of the answer to this question and with many Blockchain events focusing on the technology itself, we will ensure that this event switches this up to focus on real, tangible applications together with the underlying challenges and issues from real Blockchain experts and practitioners and those bloodied by the ‘Battle for Blockchain Talent’. Add in to the mix that we will also be hosting several satellite activities styled around Hackathons, technical demonstrators and proofs of concept and ScotChain17 becomes the must attend event for 2017. Whether you want to understand issues such as data integrity and privacy, scalability, consensus, collaboration and consortia, or want to know more about legal, ethical, moral and related practical considerations, come and hear from a global panel of subject matter experts and Blockchain industry leaders.
Raising the bar: Communicating sustainability & circular economy effectively
      13 Sep - 04:00 PM
      Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The right time, the right place, the right message Consumers as well as governments around the world are demanding more sustainable business practices. In the coming months and years there will be more legislation, public pressure and media attention on these issues. An increasing number of the world’s biggest companies are also insisting that their suppliers follow strict sustainability standards – this directly affects the core of Scotland’s economy – small and medium businesses. Communications professionals and agencies are increasingly tasked with communicating about sustainability-related issues. From workers rights in clothing factories to sustainable fishing, from water scarcity to renewable energy, these issues are mainstream concerns. They are complex and communicating them inaccurately or without real understanding is risky. We can communicate sustainability better Communications and marketing can be the strategic lead for the way a business or organisation uses sustainability to grow its brand, increase profits, engage consumers and demand loyalty. Do you want to be at the forefront of the transition to Scotland's circular, sustainable and low carbon economy? Take the lead and join us for a hands-on workshop and mini-hackathon where we’ll ask how we can deliver better comms for a real business and unlock the potential of selling sustainability. In partnership with PRCA Scotland, Mackie's of Scotland and Big Sky Communications Well-known Scottish dairy business Mackie’s will set the scene and present a sustainability-related scenario that’s live for them. Attendees from the PR, marketing, business and public sectors will then roll up their sleeves and gain practical experience through an ensuing ‘hackathon,’ where we'll work in teams to develop a campaign idea to be judged by a dragons’ den panel of leading business, communications and sustainability players. Potential 'dragons' include Martin Valenti (SEPA), John Glen (Buccleuch Estates), Beth Nicol (Citypress Scotland), Martin Grey (Viridor/Pennon Group), Andy Griffiths (Nestle), Laura Sutherland (Aura PR). Who should attend This event is aimed primarily at those who work in communications, PR and marketing either at agencies or in-house in local and national government, business and the third sector. Others who would benefit from attending, and whose contributions would be valuable, include technical sustainability specialists, creatives, those working in organisations with a sustainability focus and sustainability/communications PhDs and post-docs. A full agenda with panel speakers and dragons will be available shortly. If you have any questions or are not sure if you should attend please get in touch with us at communications@2020climategroup.org.uk Banner image: ©iStock.com/choness
DEM Open Forum and ESyS-Particle Workshop
        30 Aug - 08:30 AM
        Glasgow, United Kingdom
Invitation: You are cordially invited to attend a casual gathering of Discrete Element Method (DEM) enthusiasts to discuss current and future trends in particle-based numerical modelling. This $free Open Forum welcomes anyone who currently undertakes scientific or engineering research using DEM software; either Open Source or proprietary. The purpose is to stimulate discussion about DEM software, techniques and methods in a relaxed and collegial manner. Generous breaks and discussion periods will facilitate collaboration and comradery. The forum will also serve to launch ESyS-Particle v3.0; including the recent additions of Darcy flow and self-gravity. The agenda for the Forum is outlined below. Participants are encouraged to prepare a brief (5 minute) introductory presentation and to bring their own laptop computers. The Centrepiece of the forum will be a “GenGeo” hackathon in which teams will compete to produce the most creative (and hopefully impractical!) initial DEM particle geometries using the Open Source GenGeo Software. GenGeo is a package for generating complex particle geometries for DEM simulations; which is also maintained by the ESyS-Particle developers. The convenors will supply bootable USB drives preloaded with ESyS-Particle-3.0 and GenGeo-1.4. For those who are interested to learn more about the software and its usage, the final day will comprise a hands-on ESyS-Particle Scripting Workshop. This will be tailored to those who are interested to make use of ESyS-Particle as part of their research. Other forum participants (including “spies” from other DEM software teams!) are also most welcome to attend the Workshop.  Please note that places are limited to 30 persons. Please do not register until your attendance is confirmed. As this is a free event, no catering will be provided. However, there are numerous campus cafes within a short distance of the venue. 19 Apr - 12:00 PM
              Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Edinburgh College is inviting you to help support students engaging in an employability hackathon on the 19th April. It will take 1 hour of your time for a working lunch, lunch is provided, and we would ask that a small group of students can speak to you informally along with other employers about the challenges employers face with regards finding new staff and recruits. The focus is specifically on finding employees with IT and digital skills. The hackathon is a two day event where students facilitated by Scottish Institute for Enterprise and Software Development Company PDMS are working towards creating an all-encompassing employability portal where employers and job seekers can find each other for employment, internships, placements, work experience and apprenticeships. The idea behind the hackathon is to iron out and address the barriers which currently hinder a lot of this activity from happening. It will be held at our Sighthill campus on 19th April in our Enterprise suite. It will be a working lunch at either 12:00 or 13:00. We would be very grateful if you would be able to take part, and if so could you please book a free Eventbrite ticket so we can track attendees.
