      EQUIwikiPEDIA Hackathon #1
      01 Nov - 10:00 AM
      London, United Kingdom
EQUIwikiPEDIA is an initiative to create an online filtering device, together with the Wikimedia Foundation, for equality and active change making within academia and beyond. Gender and race bias is a well-known problem within humanities as well as other fields of higher education. This is a call to join forces within Royal College of Art and across London to challenge current standards within our field and create an online filtering device for accessing web-based free-content, featuring women, people of colour, differently abled/ people with disability, non-western origin, and LGBTQIA+ exclusively. The aim is to have a positive effect on equality in representation by making it easier to find a wider representation of perspectives besides well established and overrepresented cannons, on any topic or search word. About the event As part of our AcrossRCA research and building week we invite you for a 1-day hackathon, hosted at Royal College of Art. Our task will be to build a functional prototype for a filtering device, enabling the user of getting a more relevant Wikipedia search results when looking for notable people, on any search word, who are marginalised due to systemic bias – women, people of colour, differently abled/ people with disability, non-western origin, and LGBTQIA+.  Skills and experience required As EQUIwikiPEDIA should be developed by people with experience and knowledge from effected intersections of underrepresentation, the initiative is extra open for people of underrepresented groups, with experience of academia, activism, programming, web development, web-design and PR. Catering There will be some food and drinks provided during the day for attendees. Please let us know if you have special dietary requirements and we will endeavour to provide suitable alternatives where required. Code of conduct All attendees, sponsors, partners, volunteers and staff at our hackathon are required to agree with the following code of conduct. Organisers will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to ensure a safe environment for everybody. https://hackcodeofconduct.org/  Terms and conditions By attending the event, you agree to license all ideas under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
