DataKind & Teradata DataDive in Anaheim!
16 Oct - 02:00 PM
Anaheim , United States
Calling all socially conscious analysts, statisticians, data scientists, coders, hackers, designers, and eager-to-learn do-gooders - a DataDive is coming your way!
To kick off Teradata's annual PARTNERS Conference, DataKind is hosting a 2-day DataDive on October 16th and 17th and we are looking for data do-gooders of all backgrounds to roll up their sleeves and work side by side with world-changing organizations to help use data to unravel tough questions and prototype new solutions.
Collaborate and engage with some of the brightest minds in data science, social change and technology as you work in teams to analyze, visualize, and mashup fascinating data sets to create real world change.
We believe data has the power to change the world, but only when we all work together. Join us for a data adventure like you've never seen and get ready to make friends, build skills and help unleash the power of data to serve humanity!
Where:
Annaheim Marriot October 16 and 17
SCHEDULE:
October 16 2pm – 10pm October 17 9am – 8pm Note: You can attend one or both days. You do not need to be registered for the Teradata PARTNERS conference to participate.
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!
On Friday we all get together to first hear a bit from the organizations we'll be working with throughout the event and then we'll get to the data! DataDivers will choose which problems they'd like to work on and form teams around their individual questions. Each team will have a Data Ambassador assigned to them who will help advise on and manage the projects throughout the day. We'll have meals and keep the space open until 10PM for any late-night divers.
CONTINUING ON SATURDAY
We will be back for action Saturday morning to keep cranking on the work we started on Friday. In the afternoon we’ll put together some final presentations. This is your chance to show the world what you have done with data! This is the chance for our partner non-profits to better understand what your team did.
OTHER ITEMS OF NOTE FOR THE WEEKEND:
Unlike a hack-a-thon, the goal is not (necessarily) to create an app. Instead it is to work with teams of experts to understand a truly difficult problem through data. You could end up with a visualization, an analysis, some graphs, or even just some new datasets by the end of the event, and all of those are fantastic results!
There is a Github repository setup to use for sharing code, data, and analyses during the event. This will be our primary resource for capturing everything developed at the DataDive, so please use it for sharing and collaboration.
We do not assign you to a problem. We want you to work with the problem and data you feel most passionate about, so come Friday with an open mind and be ready to learn.
You do not have to stay the entire weekend to participate in the event. We hope that you will find a project you can dig into, but you are always welcome to come and go as you please.

Hack the Gender Gap: Women's Hackathon at USC Annenberg
09 Oct - 07:00 PM
Los Angeles, United States
THE HACKATHON IS COMPLETELY SOLD OUT!
Hackathon to empower female students with focus on immersive journalism
There’s a serious gender gap in both the journalism and technology industries — especially in business and leadership roles. That’s why MediaShift and the USC Annenberg School for Journalism and Communication are hosting a Women’s Hackathon — a weekend designed for students to develop technological and entrepreneurial skills critical to the journalism jobs of the future, and gain hands-on experience with immersive journalism and virtual reality. Taking place on October 9 to 11, 2015, the weekend will kick off Friday evening with a discussion among top women in media and tech. Then the students will break into teams to create their own startup ideas aroundimmersive journalism and VR, presenting them to judges on Sunday. Female faculty and professionals from around the country will serve as team facilitators and mentors. Undergraduate and grad students are welcome to participate.
The weekend event is MediaShift’s second Women’s Hackathon after last year’s bi-coastal blow-out, with a hackathon at West Virginia University and panel at Google in Silicon Valley.
This year’s event is sponsored by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and WVU’s Reed College of Media.
Thanks to the Ford Foundation, we have 10 travel scholarships of up to $500 each to offer to female students who cannot afford travel to Los Angeles. Applications are closed for travel scholarships.

We believe a community of peers working, learning and solving problems together can create the tools journalism needs to thrive on the open Web. Keep up with that community via our website Source.
HOW THE HACKATHON WORKS
From the students, faculty and pros assembled, we’ll create “dream teams” with a mix of necessary disciplines — content, design, technology and business — who will learn to work together in the crucible of the Hackathon. The weekend will be a combination of focused talks and training from innovation leaders and experts, work sessions and final presentations of solutions from each team. Faculty and industry experts will provide expertise to each team and help them rapidly develop their product or concept. Teams will envision, map and pitch a startup in immersive journalism and VR that can deliver a singular idea, product, service, or process to serve the public in journalism. Rather than be a traditional Hackathon focused on coding and building, this one will be about collaboration, team-building and entrepreneurship.
HOST SCHOOL
The Hackathon will be hosted by the USC Annenberg School of Journalism and Communication, bringing in female college students from the region and around the country to invent and envision their role and influence in an emerging technology market. The emerging market the Hackathon will focus on is immersive journalism and VR, and the event will include a crash course in virtual reality gear such as Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard.
The program will take place in the new Wallis Annenberg Hall:
WHO?
This is a female-only hackathon for any female college students to participate on teams, with female faculty and professionals serving as team facilitators and mentors. The goal is to help the students invent and envision their role in an emerging technology market. No prior technology experience is required.
So far, we have the following schools represented at the Hackathon, with either faculty and/or students attending: USC Annenberg University of Virginia University of Wisconsin University of California at Davis Arizona State University Howard University Quinnipiac University West Virginia University Boston University Northern Arizona University University of California at Berkeley University of Missouri Northwestern University Stanford University University of Texas at Austin American University University of Arizona University of Nevada-Reno University of San Francisco Morgan State University

About the Speakers
Mayor Kevin McKeownCity of Santa Monica
Kevin McKeown has been a Santa Monica renter for almost 40 years. He moved here to become general manager of KROQ, a career path begun at Yale's campus radio station.
He also has been an award-winning advertising writer, done voice-overs, and owned a small radio recording studio on Main Street. McKeown now serves local children and teachers as Macintosh computer consultant for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
On the Council, where he is in his fifth term, McKeown focuses especially on affordable housing and environmental sustainability. He devotes much time and energy to responding to residents, and his leadership in helping people become more involved in local governance is longstanding. McKeown came to the Council after chairing a neighborhood group, serving on the Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights steering committee, and sharing his professional expertise as a founder of the city's Public Electronic Network (PEN) and member of the Santa Monica Telecommunications Working Group.
McKeown has helped engage regional cities in working together on issues of homelessness, which he brought to the table as Santa Monica's alternate to the Westside Cities Council of Governments. He is an elected member of the Democratic Party State Central Committee, and Southern California vice-chair of the party’s Irish-American caucus. He has twice (2010 and 2013) been named our Assembly District Democrat of the Year.
McKeown is committed to protecting Santa Monicans' quality of life.
Understanding the link between pressures for overdevelopment and private political donations, McKeown continues to work in support of community efforts for local campaign finance reform.

You will be able to work with a local team in Los Angeles, or even join with teams in one or more of the participation cities.
Together our vision is to provide more opportunities for communities all over the world to participate and showcase innovation and entrepreneurship. We expect over 2,000 people to participate across the planet, and address a number of challenges aimed at helping release the oppressed, teaching God’s Word, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and supporting the church and the body of Christ.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
We want to catalyze friendship, passion, purpose, and collaboration in technical and entrepreneurial communities.
To challenge and release you to create and use 21st century technologies to serve God’s Kingdom.
To create a scalable community across the world to accelerate and encourage Christian innovators.
A Los Angeles judging panel will choose the award prizes to the best projects.
The 2015 program will conclude in December 2015. Every participating city will give two of their local winners to a Global Judging Panel that will decide the best projects created across the world during the Global Hackathon Weekend.

Digital LA - Digital Dogs
29 Sep - 07:00 PM
Santa Monica, United States
If you love dogs and digital, this is perfect for you! Join us in celebrating National Dog Week, by featuring Silicon Beach dog-related startups and content creators that all help us take care of man's best friend, and get a bite of the estimated $60B pet care industry, according to the American Pet Products Assocation.
Meet Zingy (on demand dog walkers), Dog Land (Yelp for dogs), PrideBites (custom pet accessories), Bark'N'Borrow (dog sitters), Vet On Demand (Skype with vets), and Reach Agency (digital content strategy for Purina).
We'll discuss how these startups and content crators market and promote their services from digital marketing to social media and influencers (and cute puppies!), determine which new features to add, grow their teams, and gain trust of dog owners. We'll be at the new Santa Monica WeWork - Santa Monica Promenade, which is dog friendly, so yes you can bring your (friendly, plays well with others) dog!
SCHEDULED SPEAKERS (more to be added) - Tobi Skovron, Zingy, CEO & Founder. Zingy is "Uber for Dog Walking", a convenient on-demand pet service that allows dog owners to use their mobile app to promptly book a trained and trusted dog walker when they're unavailable. @ZingyPet
