Unlock the Box, presented by The New Georgia Project
09 Oct - 05:00 PM
Atlanta, United States
This October 9th-10th, The New Georgia Project will host a hackathon dedicated to dismantling the barriers to civic participation faced by citizens. We’ll bring together programmers, designers, civic engagement groups, public officials, and voters to identify the most common obstacles Georgians face when attempting to vote.
We’ll emerge from the hackathon with a number of applications that can be used to bring large numbers of registrants to the democratic process in the shortest time--and in the most efficient manner--possible.
Beyond that, we’ll highlight the importance of open data to innovation in government, and underscore the benefits of public/private partnerships in solving society's big problems.
We’re working on a plan that will bring democracy to ALL Georgians.
Now all we need is you.
All coding levels are welcome (and you don't need to be a techie to come--anyone interested in brainstorming creative ways to expand voting access is invited!). We'll assign groups on Friday evening (...don't feel like you need to come with a team!).

Code for the Kingdom HACKATHON
Transforming Lives Hackathon
Ideate. Build. Impact.
Create technology that matters.
A hackathon movement to ignite the Christian passion and purpose of technologists and entrepreneurs to innovate culture shaping technologies that would reclaim our times for the Gospel.
Engage, envision, challenge, and release the culture makers for sustained Kingdom impact.
--- WHAT IS IT?
Code for the Kingdom is pioneering Atlanta’s first faith-inspired hackathon this October – as part as the Global Code for the Kingdom hackathon weekend.
Code for the Kingdom is an initiative of Leadership Network, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization fostering innovation by bringing talented people together to take ideas to implementation to impact.
On the weekend of October 2-4, 2015, we are bringing together technologists, entrepreneurs, creative’s, businesspeople, ministry leaders, visionaries, and anyone passionate about faith and technology, to use their gifts to advance the Gospel.
The Global Hackathon will run in 14 world cities simultaneously, including Addis Ababa, Albuquerque, Atlanta, Bangalore, Guatemala City, Houston, Jakarta, Kansas City, London, Los Angeles, Nairobi, Raleigh, Seattle and Waterloo.
You will be able to work with a local team in Atlanta, or even join with teams in one or more of the participation cities.
Together our vision is to provide more opportunities for communities all over the world to participate and showcase innovation and entrepreneurship. We expect over 2,000 people to participate across the planet, and address a number of challenges aimed at helping release the oppressed, teaching God’s Word, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and supporting the church and the body of Christ.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
We want to catalyze friendship, passion, purpose, and collaboration in technical and entrepreneurial communities.
To challenge and release you to create and use 21st century technologies to serve God’s Kingdom.
To create a scalable community across the world to accelerate and encourage Christian innovators.
An Atlanta judging panel will choose the award prizes to the best projects.
The 2015 program will conclude in December 2015. Every participating city will give two of their local winners to a Global Judging Panel that will decide the best projects created across the world during the Global Hackathon Weekend.
A final report will be published, summarizing key highlights and results of the 2015 Code for the Kingdom Global initiative.
WE ARE LOOKING AT

Level the Coding Field Hackathon
26 Sep - 08:30 AM
Atlanta, United States
The Level Playing Field Institute(LPFI) is hosting a hackathon in Atlanta! Named "Level the Coding Field", the purpose of this hackathon is to expose minority groups to computer science and to promote production rather than just consumption of technology within these groups. Special guest speakers at the hackathon will include David Johns, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on African American Educational Excellence, and Jewel Burks, CEO/Founder PartPic.
What is a hackathon?
If you've ever wanted to build an app or game for your phone, that's what "hackathons" are for. A hackathon is a gathering of people who get together over a weekend to utilize technology to create solutions for problems they see in the world.
When will the hackathon take place?
The hackathon will be on Saturday, 8:30am - 5pm and Sunday, 8:30am - 5pm. Students must commit for the whole weekend.
Who will be there and what can I expect?
Students from under-represented groups in computer science in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades
A hacking team! You will be placed on a team based on age, technology interest and skill level
Learning how to produce your very own mobile apps over the weekend
What will the event be like?
Level The Coding Field is designed to create safe space while expanding what you think you're capable of. Students will work in teams and will be assigned mentors.
On Saturday, you will learn some mobile application development basics, generate solutions to solve real problems in your communities, and start designing a mobile app.
On Sunday, you will continue building the app while finalizing a presentation for judging.
Do I need to be a whiz at coding and computers?
No, not at all! You just need to have an interest in technology and computers and be willing to learn to build games and web apps.
What should I bring with me?
You bring your brain, enthusiasum and a willingness to hack! We provide you with food, laptops, power and guidance.
Are there prizes?
Prizes are awarded to winning teams, including a $500 grand prize!
I'm ready! How do I apply?
Complete the questions on the Eventbrite page and submit your application. Students and parents will be notified with next steps once their application has been accepted.
I'm an adult and interested in volunteering - how?
Parents and other adults (technical and non-technical) are welcome to come and help volunteer. Please sign up via Eventbrite. For mentor volunteers, there is a mandatory training on Wednesday, September 23 or Thursday, September 24 from 6-9pm.
Where will the mentor training take place?
