Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development."Global Game Jam gives us an opportunity to develop games amongst friends and new acquaintances in 48 hours with the Portland Indie Game Squad! General Details: We will begin on Friday evening at the University of Portland with a keynote, icebreakers, idea generating activities, and team forming (approx. 1-2 hours). After jammers are satisfied with their ideas and teams, they will work on their games until Sunday evening at around 8pm. To support a fun, inspiring environment, jammers are welcome to stay on site (48 hour access) at U of P for the entire weekend. This event will operate in an inclusive, discrimination-free environment with no tolerance for abuse or harassment. Please refer to our Code of Conduct for more information on our policies. Participants must be 18 or older to participate unless accompanied by an adult. For more details, please contact us. Some participants choose not to form teams beforehand, and use GGJ to inspire new relationships via the icebreakers at the beginning of the 48 hour period. Other enjoy working with people they already know or alone, and that's okay! We will not have formal sleeping spaces, but organizers will be able to help set up spaces and make recommendations for those who stay overnight. Some equipment will be provided, though jammers are responsible for their own overall health, wellness, and other needs (which will be supported via suggested breaks, mealtimes, etc.). Equipment provided includes Computers, Internet, Power Strips, and Extension Cables. Computers with more software may become available closer to the event date. Ticket & Registration Details: Jammers are considered officially registered when they have a ticket via this Eventbrite site. Global Game Jam website registration will occur the week leading up to the jam. We have room for 165 jammers. This year, tickets are $10 to cover costs for food, giveaways, scholarships, and the organizing team. Having a ticket guarantees your space at the jam, including meals through the weekend. A "Full Weekend Jammer Ticket (+ Overnight!)" reserves your ability to come/stay on and off site from the jam at any time over the course of the weekend. In the case of our site being over fire code capacity, we will ask non-ticket holders to leave, though we have never had to do this in the past. If you only need a Full Weekend Jammer Ticket but "Full Weekend Jammer Ticket (+ Overnight!)" are all that's left, grab what you can; tickets are first-come, first-served! The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event (game creation) taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development. It is the growth of an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, we could come together, be creative, share experiences and express ourselves in a multitude of ways using video games – it is very universal. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48 hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity. The structure of a jam is usually that everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon, watches a short video keynote with advice from leading game developers, and then a secret theme is announced. All sites worldwide are then challenged to make games based on that same theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. In January 2018, we had 803 locations in 108 countries create 8,606 games in one weekend! GGJ 2019 is January 25-27 at a location near you… if not you can make one of your own. The jam is known for helping foster new friendships, increase confidence and opportunities within the community. The jam is always an intellectual challenge. People are invited to explore new technology tools, trying on new roles in development and testing their skills to do something that requires them to design, develop create, test and make a new game in the time span of 48 hours. The GGJ stimulates collaboration and is not a competition. Our hosts are the Enthusiasm Collective, a diverse community of cartoonists, designers, writers, filmmakers, game makers, activists, and more. The venue has plenty of tables and chairs, a refrigerator, a microwave, dishes, Wi-Fi, and power outlets. Please bring your own computers, food, sleeping bags, and any other supplies you might need. There are several paid parking lots located nearby, but it's best not to drive while sleep-deprived. Try arranging a ride home, use mass transit, or maybe take a cab. Space is limited. Reservations will be required for each person on your team, except members of the Enthusiasm Collective. Please let us know if you need to cancel.
