MARS IS HACKATHON
07 Nov - 09:00 AM
Chicago, United States
Interested in joining a Chicago Hackathon? The Wrigley Company was founded in 1891 and originally sold products such as soap and baking powder. The company’s founder began packing chewing gum with each pack of baking powder and quickly realized the chewing gum was more popular than the soap and baking powder! At that time, Wrigley started a gum business. In 2008, the Wrigley Company was acquired by MARS and remains a successful, global company selling gum, mints and candy like Skittles and Starburst all over the world.   With Innovation as a key driver of the business, the Wrigley Company is looking for fresh ways to understand & reach new and existing consumers to remain ever relevant for the next 100+ years! MARS Information Services is looking to engage with the Tech community of Chicago to run an open Hackathon on behalf of Wrigley. Who should attend?  This is an open challenge for digital tech minded people meaning we are welcoming anyone who has skills within the digital mobile / social space. It is NOT essential to be able to code and write software on the day (although that would be great) BUT this is a technical hackathon so must be “tech focused” ideas. We would be delighted to see a real mixture of attendees, so if you are a Student, Start-up, Working Professional or simply a “Tech Savvy” person then we’d love to hear why you should be considered for attending our session. The event is open to individual applications but we would recommend that you come in teams of up to 3 people ideally with a mixture of design skills, marketing skills, technical skills & business skills. The maximum team size will be 3 people. Prize money will be distributed evenly across the winning teams. Why bother? We are offering $7,500 to the first prize winner and $2,500 to the runner up team This is a safe place to play, learn and be inspired by like minded people This will be an exciting event taking place in 1871 (Chicago’s largest tech Start-up Hub) within the Merchandise Mart, downtown Chicago. You get the opportunity to showcase your talent Connect with MARS and WRIGLEY executives Experience the world of Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Get a taste of what it’s like to be a Tech Start-up Great resume builder experience Help solve a real world business challenge for a truly Global Organization   Breakfast, lunch, coffee, and snacks will be provided.   Registration Email Darcy.Gassel@businessmodelsinc.com and explain in 100 words or less why you (and/or your team) should participate in the MARS Hackathon. Please also include a resume or LinkedIn Profile Link. Application Deadline - October 30th  Please note that there is limited availability. Earlier application = increased chance of admission. FEEDBACK The 2015 NU Scramble™ @ The Garage is designed to make highest and best use of the time you invest. Past Scramble™ teams have piloted social enterprises, demo’d education and personal lifestyle mobile apps, and modeled health and life sciences startups. The Scramble forged hundreds of new cross-campus relationships as attendees test-drove ideas and prototypes for potential growth.  Scramble alumni had a few things to share: “Prior to this experience, I’ve had a huge mental block, thinking that I would need to capture a perfect idea before getting started. At the Scramble, the experience of failing and refining was really beneficial from a personal development standpoint.”
“Recognizing that similar to the real-world, perseverance matters. It was also wonderful to push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.”
“[I learned] How to approach a pitch and build a pitch deck [and] tools/resources available to prototype/ launch web businesses. Developing a good idea is hard, executing is even harder.”
“The Scramble experience was great – amazing to experience the assimilation of new ideas, structuring and development of epic ideas in such a short span of time.”
“Met and worked with incredible people. Learned about new software and websites—immensely useful for my future.“‘
“Getting to connect with people from across campus was the best part! I even connected up with other people to pursue different start-ups that we plan to work on after this weekend.”
“This is what I always imagined college and grad school would be like — collaborating with people with different interests from across the university. I’ve learned things you definitely don’t learn in medical school, and I’ll be back next year.”
“Best use of $ in a long time. I don’t believe that, in terms of this project, my time could have been used more effectively.”
“This was a great opportunity to connect and see what people are doing around the Harvard community. It was a great way to collaborate and work on a shared project.”
“This was my first real introduction to the complete start up process. From the discovery to the business plan. I learned a lot and hope to continue with our project.”
“Definitely valuable! An amazing bootcamp that enabled us to develop skills in taking an idea from initial pitch, to team building, to design, to final pitch, peppered up with valuable coaching time, personal / team analytics and input from [a] championship panel.” SCRAMBLE FACULTY Coaches, panel members, and guests have represented organizations as diverse as: Accenture  Highland Capital Partners  Acme Packet  Hubspot  Acquia  MassChallenge  Ashoka Innovators for the Public  Mass Ventures  Campus Direct  Mass General Hospital  Connect  Meetup.com  Community Wealth Ventures  Microsoft  Compass Partners mtvU  Core Capital Partners   One Source Staffing  Chew Lab PureTech Ventures   Devonshire Investors  Proximate Disney Research Raffa Consulting Eagle Point Advisors RCN Fairhaven Capital Scvngr/LevelUp Flybridge Capital Partners SRA Touchstone Consulting Harvard i-Lab Xfund HourlyNerd   FAQs Who should attend a Scramble™? Undergraduates, graduate, PhD, and postdocs seeking to develop and refine their startup and innovation skills enrolled in any of Northwestern’s 12 Schools.  Whether you are brand new to the student startup/innovation scene, you have an idea to share and are seeking teammates, or you are interested in stepping up your collaboration game, you’ll find the Scramble™ immensely helpful.
Please note this event is for Northwestern students only. We check attendee registration at the door. Bring a printed or smartphone copy of your EventBrite registration and Northwestern student ID. Attendance will be limited to registered guests and tickets will not be available at the door. What should I bring? 1. Laptops w/ charger
 2. Phone w/ charger
 3. Pen & notebook
 4. Reusable water bottle (eco-friendly)
 5. Pre-design your own lanyard (not required)
 6. Props (i.e. helmets for Xtreme coding, costumes, personal mascots, etc.) for inspiration, motivation, & feel-good entertainment.
*All campus policies apply. Do I have to pitch an idea? What if I don’t have an idea? We believe it’s important to bring a few ideas to share even if you aren’t interested or committed to pursuing those ideas. Ideas are the currency through which you transact initial introductions and build relationships with fellow attendees. You encounter new challenges, problems, and questions everyday – these are all potential ideas to pitch. You have ideas. What about sharing ideas? The Scramble embrace an open and free-flow exchange of ideas, interests, and efforts. The Scramble is not an ideal venue to share or develop proprietary products and services unless you take proper measures to protect intellectual property (IP) before attending. If you intend to pitch an idea that is potentially proprietary or confidential, consult an attorney prior to attending or simply do not pitch the idea.  All pitches and efforts are considered “open source,” which means any idea shared by Attendees at the Scramble goes into a common pool of ideas and prototypes that can be freely licensed by anyone--ANYONE. If this is a concern, have a strategy to approach this situation prior to attending. Here's the flipside: After the Scramble, you can continue refining the concept into proprietary IP. If you decide not to pitch an idea, focus your efforts leading up to the Scramble on creating a personal learning agenda – do you want to test-drive coding or app prototyping technologies? Do you need to brush up on your presentation or project management skills? More Questions? Email Stephen at: STEPHEN [@] SCRAMBLESYSTEMS.COM.

                17 Oct - 09:30 AM
                Chicago, United States
ProtoHack exists to show non-coders that they can create something amazing from nothing. We empower and enable the non-technical community with the tools, knowledge and connections that will help bring their idea to life and visually communicate it through prototyping. How does it work? No coding is required. Instead you will use prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you can think of to VISUALLY demo your idea on stage. (We’ve put together the best tools for non-coders, so don’t fret if you’ve never prototyped.) Although we encourage you to try some prototyping tools prior to attending ProtoHack, we will begin ProtoHack with optional educational workshops on how to use some of the top prototyping tools. You can choose to prototype alone or form a team with other participants and decide on an idea together. Teams can be up to 5 people. You will have 9 hours to produce a prototype. (Remember, you are creating a lean prototype of your idea and it doesn't need to be perfect. The focus should be on visually showing what the idea is.) At the end, you or your team will present on stage to a panel of judges consisting of developers and investors to get feedback.   Looking for the Agenda? Click here Ethan Austin Co-founder and President GiveForward Ethan is passionate about family, burritos, and helping people fight cancer. His personal mantra is Have Fun. Do Good. Help Others.   What's in it for me? ProtoHack will be a 12-hour experience where you will build a prototype that communicates an idea visually. Learn how to effectively use industry leading tools to put together a prototype and visually communicate your idea. Meet other like-minded people with various backgrounds in design, business, marketing, product management and more who are all excited and passionate about building something.  Become a better product person with a deeper understanding of UX. Exclusive access to over $200 in prototyping tools and sponsor related goodies. We will also invite developers who are looking for new projects, to come and watch the presentations so they have a no-pressure opportunity to contact you if they’re interested in helping you actually code your prototype.  Learn more about ProtoHack by visiting our website.
