Hatch This 2018
02 Nov - 05:00 PM
Asheville, United States
UNLEASH YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL POTENTIAL
A mash-up of an accelerator, a hackathon, and a weekend-long party, Hatch This matches attendees in teams with expert mentorship to craft a startup and compete for prizes including seed funding and office space at Hatch Asheville, located downtown at 45 S. French Broad Avenue.
Participants should come ready to pitch a business idea or ready to offer your skills and join a team. Once teams form, the real work begins: build a prototype, get real user feedback, pitch your deck in front of real investors, and win prizes.
The cost to participate in the weekend-long event is $75. (We'll feed you and give you some cool swag, too!)
The general public is invited to purchase tickets for the Final Pitch event on Sunday, November 4 for $10. This event will be held at Asheville Social Hall.
Climate Data Hackathon: Disruptions to Global Coffee Supply
21 Oct - 09:00 AM
Asheville, United States
Join us at The Collider’s first Climate Data Hackathon. We’ve partnered with Counter Culture Coffee to identify climate-related challenges facing the coffee industry.
Coffee is a particularly climate-sensitive crop, so even small changes in temperature and precipitation can dramatically impact quality, yield, and price. And it’s not just your cup of coffee at stake, but also the livelihoods of coffee farmers around the world.
Hackathon Goal:
Use NOAA and NASA weather and climate data and Population Explorer demographic data to help coffee companies and producers better understand their climate risks. Help build data-driven solutions for climate adaptation and resilience.
Coffee Industry Climate Challenges:
Shade and coffee quality
Forecasting conditions for growers
Crop alternatives
Play with Data
Did you know Asheville is home to the world’s largest collection of climate data? NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information houses over 37 petabytes of environmental data and is headquartered right here. At the Climate Data Hackathon, you will have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with a host of publicly available datasets with the help of expert data navigators. Coffee industry pros will also be on hand.
The most useful datasets for the coffee industry climate challenges will be collected in advance of the Hackathon. More details to come.
Connect
Meeting people is at least half the fun. Talk data and design with peers, and meet leaders and innovators in climate data, tech, and science.
Drink Coffee
Do you love coffee? Coffee is in trouble. This hackathon offers you a real opportunity to use your technical know-how to impact something delicious and significant.

Asheville Coder's League - Code Retreat
21 Apr - 08:00 AM
Asheville, United States
Come out and join the Asheville Coder's League for a day-long Code Retreat! These are pair/group-programming exercises and any skill level is welcome - great for those both new and experienced! Think a Hackathon-lite ...-lite.
It will be a full day, but coffee will be provided in the morning and lunch will be provided at noon.
We will be meeting in room 108 in the Balsam Building at AB Tech.
FAQs
What will the exercises be like?
Good question! Our selection process for problems is to identify a problem domain, then determine 4-5 problems to sequentially build upon eachother in that domain, with the expected complexity of each problem taking 30 minutes to an hour. As example, the problem domain for a previous retreat was Five Card Hold'em Poker. The first problem was to build a program that could model a 52 card deck, the next problem was to get that deck to shuffle. Eventually the program should deal cards and compare hands to determine a winner.
You've mentioned that these are group exercises. How will groups be decided?
In the first twenty minutes there's a general scrum where participants feel eachother out and naturally group up for which language they wish to work with for the day. Participants are encouraged to group up in such a way that the various groups have a smattering of experience levels. Inevitably some groups will have more general experience and competence than others, and that's okay! This isn't a competition, and groups aren't penalized for finishing problems late.
What language will we be doing the exercises in?
That's up to you and your group to decide! There isn't a event preferred language and previous events have seen the groups choose to use Java, Clojure, Javascript, C#, and others. This is also a great time to learn a flesh out a new language!
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Nope! This is an all ages event.
What are my parking options for getting to and from the event?
AB Tech has ample parking and is quite empty on a Saturday.
Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
Yes, that isn't a problem.
