2019 TCAT Holiday Toy Hack
24 Nov - 09:00 AM
Bellevue, United States
The Taskar Center for Accessible Technology invites you to participate in the 2019 Holiday Toy Hack! At the TCAT Holiday Toy Hackathon, volunteers modify store-bought toys to create switch-accessible toys. These Adaptations make the toys accessible to individuals with disabilities so they can play independently. TCAT will ship those toys to recipients who require switch-access toys and, like everyone, will enjoy and learn from play! We hope 2019 will be our largest event yet, with greater numbers of volunteers and toys we gift-- we need your help!! Join us! If you would like to request a toy, please CLICK HERE TO MAKE A TOY REQUEST. If you would like to volunteer, please read on. Why toy adaptation? Off-the-shelf toys are often inaccessible to kids with motor limitations or developmental disabilities because they require some force or dexterity to activate. Switch adaptation allows new opportunities for active participation and meaningful play interactions by slightly modifying the electronics of a toy to accept different kinds of switches.About the Toy Hack on Nov 24th, 2019: join us for four hours of toy adaptation: 9am-1pm. Your volunteer efforts will make this holiday more inclusive while you exercise your skills in toy adaptation (a little soldering, some toy tinkering and lots of heart!). Please sign up to reserve your spot as the event fills up and we are space-limited. Please note: Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate minors as volunteers in the MakerSpace. Volunteers under 18 will not be able to use the soldering equipment, but can still help with gift wrapping and cards. Would you like to help but cannot make it to the event? Please consider sponsoring a toy with a $50 tax-deductible donation: CLICK HERE TO SPONSOR A TOY (indicate in the comment if you'd like your donation to go to a toy for a particular child). Recognize Exclusion, Design for Inclusion
    21 Nov - 06:30 PM
    Bellevue, United States
Tickets Member tickets are FREE (with promo code sent via email). General admission is $8. All tickets include a pizza dinner! About the event In your experiences, what barriers do you (inadvertently) create and who do they exclude? Before designing the Xbox Adaptive Controller, the team behind it needed to recognize the barriers that traditional controllers create for people with limited mobility. We take you through the inclusive design principles we use at Microsoft, and how they were used to create the Xbox Adaptive Controller. You'll also come away with tips on how you can remove unnecessary friction from your experiences and design more for inclusion. About the speakers Bryce Johnson, Inclusive Lead for Microsoft Devices Bryce Johnson has been designing accessible experiences and technology for over 15 years. As a member of Team Xbox he was part of the core team that started the inclusive design and accessibility practice. Bryce worked across Microsoft teams to launch the assistive technologies on the Xbox One, including Copilot. Bryce initiated and designed the first Inclusive Tech Lab at Microsoft, which has now hosted over seven thousand visitors; it is a facility where people can explore how people with disabilities interact with Microsoft games, services, and devices. Bryce is one of the inventors of the Xbox Adaptive Controller ever since he was a lead on its project at the 2016 Microsoft One Week Hackathon. Bryce is now the Inclusive Lead for Microsoft Devices where he is devoted to ensuring Microsoft products are accessible. John Porter, UX Designer at Microsoft, PhD Candidate at UW Named one of MIT Technology Review's 35 Innovators Under 35 in 2019, John Porter is a designer on Microsoft’s Modclusive Input & Accessibility team, specializing in the intersection of HCI, systems design, experiential equity, and accessibility. Additionally, he is a PhD candidate at the University of Washington in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, where his dissertation research focuses on video game accessibility. When not designing, he can usually be found trying to make time for the latest games or talking about Seattle sports, technology, or his latest concert experience on twitter as @the_3. Seattle GiveCamp 2019
        18 Oct - 06:00 PM
        Redmond, United States
Seattle GiveCamp is a hackathon for good where tech volunteers create software for nonprofit organizations in the Seattle area. The software solutions will likely include web sites, desktop apps, databases, or other pieces of software that need to be coded, designed, updated, or configured. We anticipate creating solutions for about 10-15 needy nonprofits this year.  We will have a need for programmers, web developers, graphic designers, database admins, and project managers. You do not have to have to be an expert to be a tech volunteer. Of course, if you are an expert in one or more disciplines, that's fantastic. All you really need is some technical experience/education and a desire to help. Seattle GiveCamp is asking technical volunteers to pay a $20 fee to secure a place at this year's GiveCamp. In return, we will provide a place to code/design/create, lots of free food & drink, networking opportunities, a snazzy t-shirt, and a surprise gift or two. (Non-tech support volunteers will not have to pay the fee.) In case you are wondering, the $20 fee will be distributed to the nonprofits that we will be helping at the event since our sponsors will be covering the cost of the event itself. Schedule Friday, Oct 18, 6pm-11pm (we will be serving dinner) Saturday, Oct 19, 8am-11pm (we will serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) Sunday, Oct 20, 8am-6pm (we will be serving breakast, lunch, and snacks) Note: Unlike some past years, we will be ending at 11pm on Friday and Saturday. There is no sleep over option.
