Interested in joining a Chicago Hackathon? The Wrigley Company was founded in 1891 and originally sold products such as soap and baking powder. The company’s founder began packing chewing gum with each pack of baking powder and quickly realized the chewing gum was more popular than the soap and baking powder! At that time, Wrigley started a gum business. In 2008, the Wrigley Company was acquired by MARS and remains a successful, global company selling gum, mints and candy like Skittles and Starburst all over the world.   With Innovation as a key driver of the business, the Wrigley Company is looking for fresh ways to understand & reach new and existing consumers to remain ever relevant for the next 100+ years! MARS Information Services is looking to engage with the Tech community of Chicago to run an open Hackathon on behalf of Wrigley. Who should attend?  This is an open challenge for digital tech minded people meaning we are welcoming anyone who has skills within the digital mobile / social space. It is NOT essential to be able to code and write software on the day (although that would be great) BUT this is a technical hackathon so must be “tech focused” ideas. We would be delighted to see a real mixture of attendees, so if you are a Student, Start-up, Working Professional or simply a “Tech Savvy” person then we’d love to hear why you should be considered for attending our session. The event is open to individual applications but we would recommend that you come in teams of up to 3 people ideally with a mixture of design skills, marketing skills, technical skills & business skills. The maximum team size will be 3 people. Prize money will be distributed evenly across the winning teams. Why bother?  *All campus policies apply. Do I have to pitch an idea? What if I don’t have an idea? We believe it’s important to bring a few ideas to share even if you aren’t interested or committed to pursuing those ideas. Ideas are the currency through which you transact initial introductions and build relationships with fellow attendees. You encounter new challenges, problems, and questions everyday – these are all potential ideas to pitch. You have ideas. What about sharing ideas? The Scramble embrace an open and free-flow exchange of ideas, interests, and efforts. The Scramble is not an ideal venue to share or develop proprietary products and services unless you take proper measures to protect intellectual property (IP) before attending. If you intend to pitch an idea that is potentially proprietary or confidential, consult an attorney prior to attending or simply do not pitch the idea.  All pitches and efforts are considered “open source,” which means any idea shared by Attendees at the Scramble goes into a common pool of ideas and prototypes that can be freely licensed by anyone--ANYONE. If this is a concern, have a strategy to approach this situation prior to attending. Here's the flipside: After the Scramble, you can continue refining the concept into proprietary IP. If you decide not to pitch an idea, focus your efforts leading up to the Scramble on creating a personal learning agenda – do you want to test-drive coding or app prototyping technologies? The goal is to further develop our BTM Ecosystem Network — a dynamic online community platform that will strengthen connections within the black tech community by re-imagining the way interactions takes place. The first of its kind here in Chicago, the Ecosystem Network will also function as a vital technology tool to help transform Chicago into the “Global Black Tech Mecca.” Join the movement by assisting in strategizing, igniting, and building a world class virtual ecosystem directory.  ECOSYSTEM NETWORK VISION AND HACKATHON GOALS In just  three days, members of the Chicago community will come together to  begin building a platform that will play a key role in transforming the city into the “Global Black Tech Mecca.” This collaboration excites us because from it, will come a plethora of ideas that will reimagine the way members of the Chicago black tech ecosystem engage with one another.   Get your skills, apps and ideas in front of serial entrepreneurs with ChicagosNext while helping our community. ChicagosNext is a Non Profit technology hackathon event that brings together a diverse group of local, regional, national and international tech talent with an entrepreneurial spirit. The goal is to build the next app that creatively solves issues within our local neighborhood using Azure and supporting Microsoft Technologies. Local Chicago Community Leaders (several other NFP, education and community organizations) will be sharing their issues and struggles that could be solved with technology. ProtoHack exists to show non-coders that they can create something amazing from nothing. We empower and enable the non-technical community with the tools, knowledge and connections that will help bring their idea to life and visually communicate it through prototyping. How does it work? No coding is required. Instead you will use prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you can think of to VISUALLY demo your idea on stage. (We’ve put together the best tools for non-coders, so don’t fret if you’ve never prototyped.) Although we encourage you to try some prototyping tools prior to attending ProtoHack, we will begin ProtoHack with optional educational workshops on how to use some of the top prototyping tools. You can choose to prototype alone or form a team with other participants and decide on an idea together. Teams can be up to 5 people. You will have 9 hours to produce a prototype. (Remember, you are creating a lean prototype of your idea and it doesn't need to be perfect. The focus should be on visually showing what the idea is.) South Side Civic (SSC), a Harris student-led group, the UChicago Institute of Politics (IOP), the Department of Computer Science, and the Chicago Harris School for Puplic Policy are partnering to host the first-ever two-day UChicago Civic Hackathon, on Friday, October 9th, and Saturday, October 10th, at the Chicago Innovation Exchange. This event will introduce students and community leaders to civic hacking and create a space for members of the University and Chicago communities to workshop solutions to local civic problems. The UChicago Civic Hackathon is part of a larger effort to encourage young people to engage in their communities and learn how they can partner with local organizations to foster social change.  The keynote address will be on Friday at 4pm, and will be given by the first U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra. Following his address, Mr. Chopra will be joined by the City of Chicago's Chief Data Officer Tom Schenk for a moderated Q&A. Reception and the civic hackathon to follow.
