      #indycivichack: Tackling Food Insecurity
      15 Jun - 05:30 PM
      Indianapolis, United States
THE HACK IS BACK. The Indy Chamber, Techpoint, Open Indy Brigade, local and state governments and the business community gather each year to host a hackathon that addresses public need and transparency. This year is no different. Coders, developers and designers will address a challenge far too common in the Indianapolis region: food insecurity. The USDA defines food insecurity as a “household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.” According to numerous reports, roughly 175,000 food-insecure people live in Marion County alone. The term "food deserts" has become a common phrase. Access to balanced food options has a lasting impact on public health, public safety, economic growth and more. This is where we come in. Technology can serve as a means to effectively plan and distribute services and resources across our region. Developing outside-the-box solutions through data analysis and tech platforms can change this conversation. Where can the public go to get information on nutrition assistance? How can the SNAP or EBT systems be streamlined? What does public data tell us about the connection of food insecurity and other challenges facing our community? We’ll explore these questions and more. Are you up to the challenge?   THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR

CoderDojo Field Trip - To See First Responders Hackathon
            21 Apr - 11:00 AM
            Fishers, United States
This month we are doing something extra special at a slightly different time and a very different place! At our normal dojo time, there is a group of devs all across the city getting together at Launch Fishers to make cool stuff for our first responders! For more info, check out their event page. We are gonna start things off by heading up there and talking to some of the groups to see what they're doing. Then, it's back to work making cool stuff of our own! **IMPORTANT NOTE: 1) Please arrive as close to 11am as possible! Usually we love early birds but this month we need to be careful not to disturb the hackathon participants who will be working diligently around us.       2) Please enter through the main entrance of the building (this is a change from what I said earlier), located underneath the awning on the right hand side when you are facing the building. Please do not use the south entrance or any other entrances you may be aware of.       3) Get excited! We will be convening in the theater, which is located just inside the main entrance and then, we'll have a chance to interact with some real developers working on hackathon projects, before getting started for the day! **   CoderDojo is a movement orientated around running free not-for-profit coding clubs and regular sessions for young people. At a CoderDojo, young people learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos are set up, run by and taught at by volunteers. Dojos organise tours of technology companies, bring in guest speakers to talk about their career and what they do, and organise events. In addition to learning to code, members meet like minded people, show off what they’ve been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, awesome experience. CoderDojo also puts a strong emphasis on open source and free software, and has a strong network of members and volunteers globally. If you want a head start, hear are the tutorials in Scratch we've been working through: https://github.com/coderdojoindy/tutorials/blob/master/README.md
