The Inaugural UAB Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon Pitch Gala
18 Nov - 05:30 PM
Birmingham, United States
Welcome to a UAB celebration of the power of entrepreneurship to inspire the next generation and to transform communities and industries with impact and ingenuity.    Sponsored by the Alabama Power Foundation, the inaugural Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon attracted 90 applications from UAB students across the university.  We selected 25 applicants representing a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. They all share a very strong passion for entrepreneurship and are each pursuing their own entrepreneurial goals.   First, the 25-member cohort completed a three-week intensive seminar in the entrepreneurial mindset. Second, Alabama Power executive leadership presented a grand challenge to the cohort. Third, the cohort elected five leaders and formed five diverse teams. Fourth, the teams engaged independently in a one-month hackathon in which they researched and developed bold entrepreneurial solutions to the grand challenge.   Now, the teams will compete with each other. They will present their entrepreneurial solutions in five-minute pitches, and an experienced panel of judges will select three winning teams. The winners receive $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 at the pitch gala event. The Blazer Hatchery and Hackathon program cultivates entrepreneurial talent via exposure to real-world problems and opportunities.    The pitch gala event welcomes all members of Birmingham's entrepreneurial ecosystem. It will showcase UAB student talent and offer a unique glimpse into our next entrepreneurial generation.  There will be ample opportunity for networking with entrepreneurs and leaders, food and refreshments, and entertainment.     Master of Ceremonies: WVTM 13 Morning Co-anchor Eunice Elliott     A native of Bessemer, Ms. Elliott is a well-known Alabama newscaster and sports and entertainment personality. Teen Tech Bham Hackathon
    18 Jan - 06:00 PM
    Homewood, United States
TechBirmingham and TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) are teaming up to host a Hackathon exclusive for high school students. Teams will compete for one day to build solutions to make our world a safer place. We will kick off the event with a brainstorming session to get the creativity flowing on Friday evening. Saturday will be an all-day hacking and building day for the teams to work on their projects.  We are only accepting 20 teams of 4 students, and each team must have an educator as a sponsor (for homeschoolers, this will be a parent). If you are a student who does not have a team, contact christina@techbirmingham.com, and we will place you on a team. The teacher does not need to be your coach, we will have professionals in the community that will be assigned to each team as a Coach. The coaches will be there to assist with technical needs, time management and for overall support for each team.
