Coding & Cocktails November
11 Nov - 04:00 PM
Kansas City, United States
Session Topic: Cocktail Camp
***Please note the extended hours starting at 4pm through 9pm***
In our final session of the year, we set you up in a microenvironment that mimics a software development team in the wild. Working together with a mentor acting as the 'team lead' your team of two or three will work to build a web site from scratch using whatever tools you feel comfortable using. Alternatively, you can also work towards making a contribution to an open source project to boost your code portfolio! Don't worry about making your own team; we'll pair you up with other participants as you arrive, or you can let us know if you want to work with another participant you know.
Do you find hackathons intimidating or worry you don't have the skills to participate? Come join our micro-hackathon where we'll support you the entire way if you feel overwhelmed or get stuck! Don't worry, ours only lasts for 5 hours instead of the traditional 24 - you get your beauty sleep too!
Note: As a special offering, since this is our last session of the year, we are extending the hours from 4-9 p.m. to give you more time to work on your team project and to let everyone show off their great work. We will also serve the traditional programmer dinner of pizza, along with our usual cocktails.
There will be lots of guidance and support for those with no coding experience so come join the fun!
No coding experience necessary (we mean that!)
Wifi-enabled laptop is required (don't have one? Borrow one of ours)
Must be at least 21 to attend
Cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, and dinner served
Please familiarize yourself with Kansas City Women in Technology's Code of Conduct.
Do you need financial assistance to attend? View codingandcocktails.kcwomenintech.org/financialaid for more information.

HackEdKC @ Liberty Public Schools
04 Nov - 10:00 AM
Liberty, United States
HackEDkc is a student hackathon where students are challenged to solve a problem in their home, school, or community through the use of technology. High school students (9th-12th) throughout the metro will have 24 hours to build their solution and will have 5 minutes to demo to a panel of judges. Work will be judged on technical efficacy, community impact, and innovation.
During the event, guest speakers will share information on User Experience Design, Being an IT Professional, Security, Virtual Reality Developer and more. Meals and drinks will be provided. Early registration secures a T-shirt.
You don't need to be a programmer for this event. In fact, a good team is made up of programmers, artists, and entrepreneurs. Consider bringing friends that have various strengths.
EARLY REGISTRATION IS $10! After October 17, registration is $15.
Women Techmakers KC Hackathon
21 Oct - 09:30 AM
Kansas City, United States
The First Annual Women Techmakers KC Hackathon will focus on virtual assistants, specifically interactions for the Google Assistant. These interactions can be used on compatible devices like Google Home, Android devices, iPhones and any other device where the Google Assistant is available.
A basic interaction for the Google Assistant requires no code and both technical and non-technical attendees can build interactions! To build these, we will be using Dialogflow (formerly known as API.ai) and Actions on Google.
Schedule
Check-in and Networking at 9:00a
Event Starts: 9:30a
TechTalk on the tools
Codelab for guided hands-on experience
Lunch and networking
Hackathon where you'll create your vision for the Google Assistant!
The Technologies
Our interactions will use Actions on Google, the platform provided by Google to communicate with the Google Assistant. This is the public API to the Google Assistant.
Dialogflow (formerly known as API.ai) is one of the most common conversational language processing platforms used when creating applications and interactions for the Google Assistant. It supports other conversational platforms as well, including Facebook Messenger and Slack. Dialogflow isn't required when building for the Google Assistant although it provides a simplified interface and best of all, it's free.
Get a head start!
We will cover all the basics of these services during the event but if you'd like to look at these services ahead of time, here are a few places to start.

Teamwork
While it’s not required, we definitely recommend working in a team, especially for the hackathon portion of the day. You are able show up without one and find teammates the day of, but if you want to try to find teammates ahead of time, signup for our Slack at https://slack.gdgkc.org/ and start talking on #women-techmakers channel.
Work better alone? That's ok, too!

HackKC 2017
23 Sep - 09:00 AM
Kansas City, United States
Join Code for KC for an exciting two day hackathon where we write apps that solve community problems. Do you love coding, design, project management, or community engagement? How does working on open source while solving practical problems sound to you? Then join us for this exciting two day event!
The fun doesn't stop there either! Projects continue well after the hackathon until they are complete. Some apps from previous years have stayed on board for years! We want to address real problems in our community, such as environmental issues, transportation problems, and many more using open source coding networks. Our projects are created around the idea that there are real issues in our community that can have a technological solution. Through collaboration and networking we create a community-based solution and follow through with a team of coders, designers, writers (and more!) over the next six months or more to implement that solution.

September 24, 20179:00 AM - 4:30 PMWe will also have a few 1 hour classes to teach crash courses in things like PHP, design and GIS - stay tuned for more information on those!
