NSBE Energy in conjunction with the National Society of Black Engineers Professional Development Conference is hosting the Digital Oilfield Hackathon, a student-centered design competition focused on skills development and mentoring.  Innovation Through "Hacking" While 'hacking' is most commonly used to refer to a set of skills related to computer science and engineering, we use the term 'hacking; to refer to complex problem solving utilizing technology. The basis of the NSBE Energy Experience Digital Oilfield Hackathon is the following:  Inclusive Participation that goes beyond data scientists to the international involvement of industry subject matter experts to maximize the benefit of technology intersecting with energy. Technology Innovation supporting team members working through the development and implementation of their proposed solutions.  Design Team Mentors who provide background and insight into the problem statement and how to think about possible solutions.  Design Thinking Facilitators who ensure that all team members are bringing their skills and experiences to the table to maximize the learning  What we are 'Hacking'  The Digital Hackathon will focus on using Explorer GIS Platform from ESRI.  InvestH2O Youth and Student Water Resiliency Hackathon  The INVENTATHON@HCC is essentially a hackathon, with a twist!  A two-day weekend gathering of high school, community college, four-year and graduate student teams organized to address specifically defined challenges for urban water-related resiliency. Registration has been made "free" to all student participants with a generous sponsorship from Carollo Engineers and AccelerateH2O.  Using a fast-paced ‘hackathon” process and methodology, teams will be introduced to the overall issues of water management and resiliency by subject matter experts, chose a challenge to address, receive mentoring and feedback in generating technologies and integrated solutions, and present their “products and services” to a set of judges for awards and recognition during the InvestH2O 2018 Forum on September 26th, 2018. InvestH2O 2018’s topic was chosen in response to the ongoing threat of storms and floods in one part of the State, drought and depleting sources of water in other parts of Texas. Too much water one day, not enough the next. Additionally, the demand for uninterruptible water supplies due to industry and population growth, expanded use of sensors and the Internet of Things, and the requirement for fortifying critical infrastructure are persistent challenges and pressures on communities, citizens, ratepayers, industries, and facilities! So at the INVENTATHON@HCC, you can do anything from coding an app, building a robot, or making something uniquely creative based on a given theme of Water for Fall 2018! Teams can consist of 2-5 members and you will have approximately 16 hours to create something amazing! and Yes, you can do it by yourself, but it won’t be the same!   HUNGER FREE TEXANS   Presents   FOOD & NUTRITION SOLUTIONS HACKATHON September 13, 2018 ABOUT THE HACKATHON: Tackling food insecurity, diet-related disease, or increasing healthy and affordable food access and nutrition in your communities can sometimes be a daunting challenge.  Do you have a specific issue/concern/problem or question that you need resolved that needs a solution to help your organization promote healthy food access and nutrition in your community?  Imagine a think-tank of multi-disciplinary professionals, enthusiasts, advocates and students from various backgrounds and knowledge levels coming together over one day to tackle these issues.  Whether your issue is “how do I feed my seniors healthier foods on a budget”, “how can I increase veggie consumption in my community” or “how can I work closer with the faith-based community, schools, farmers or healthcare sector”, this forum of learning may provide a solution.  All participants must bring an issue to be worked on.  All issues are voted on and a certain number will be selected that day.  This is a fun day of exponential learning.  Even if your issue is not selected, what you learn may spark ideas or solutions that could address your issue and/or other programmatic areas.  Don’t’ know what a hackathon is?  Attend this workshop to experience a fun, interactive and effective problem-solving strategy to address any issue or concerns centered around food and nutrition.  This is a statewide event.  Lunch is provided.
