On November 20th, 20 of GA’s software engineers and UX designers will be showcasing their skills by presenting solutions to real world problems. We've asked our software engineers and UX designers to work together to create full-fledged applications centered around sustainability in the fashion industry.
Come see what's possible in just three days as these teams present their apps in the culmination of this social impact hackathon.
At our presentation event, you can check out their apps, see their portfolios, and meet the graduates themselves before they jump into the job market while enjoying happy hour. If you’re looking for your next source of talent, or looking to build a pipeline, this is the place to meet LA’s newest pool of talent.
Meet our Judges
Jenny LeungCo-Founder of ETHKly, Founder of BellaNoveJenny is serial entrepreneur looking to change fashions impact on our society and on our environment. She previously owned a clothing line that sold in Nordstroms and Anthropology and more recently, her startup, BellaNove, rents quality maternity wear for working women. This circular economy model encourages sourcing of high quality clothing and diverts textile wastes from ending up in landfills. A first generation college graduate and now an MBA graduate, Jenny believes everyone has the potential to change the world for the better.Gabriela MatarazzoCo-Founder of ETHKlyGabriela is a strong believer of social transformation through disruptive initiatives powered by everyday individuals. Her passion lies at the intersection of storytelling, impact and sustainability with a background in Communications and International Development Studies. Having been brought up on a developing country, she is aware of the consequences that a polluting industry, such as fashion, can cause in a country’s population and is determined to change that.
Ran Craycraft
Co-founder of Wildebeest
Ran cofounded Wildebeest with Kevin Ng in 2014 as a machine learning agency for brands. Their clients include Disney, Google, Microsoft, and Chevrolet, with a specialty in building custom software that adapts emerging technologies into scalable, consumer-facing products. Ran hails from Appalachia and studied at the University of Cincinnati and Syracuse University. Prior to starting Wildebeest, Ran was the Managing Director of North Kingdom, GM of Entertainment at AOL, and Senior Producer of Innovation at NBC Universal.

The Hackathon
There is a continuing focus on investments that support electric charging infrastructure and transportation. These investments help accelerate a more sustainable future for states, local communities, and commerce while influencing the way businesses and consumers alike access and prioritize their mobility options.Over the course of two days, hackathon participants are asked to develop the enabling software and architectures to support an electric charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and long-haul, electric trucks as they travel along the 1,300 miles of Interstate 5 from Mexico to Canada. Participants in the challenge will seek development opportunities to integrate Los Angeles city data, use of Alexa skill(s), the AWS Connected Vehicle Reference Architecture (CVRA 2.0), HERE Location Services (geocoding/search, fleet telematics, map data, navigation, routing), and the SiriusXM Connected Vehicle Services drive, location and crash incident data.
The Challenge
Participants in the hackathon will be challenged to develop solutions that support:
Smart-charging journey planning (ML for most convenient station, predict availability, advance scheduling, and reservation) including integrated payments
Battery performance and analytics and calculating range based upon driving style
Improving the in-vehicle experience (e.g. using Alexa for Automotive)
Use vehicle and location data to create models for predicting either:
Driving range based on driving style
Impact/damage modeling based on real time vehicular data
Who Should Attend
Developers who are skilled in the following areas (but are not limited to) are highly encouraged to attend: Blockchain, Business Applications, Mobility as a Service, Connected Vehicle, Smarter Cities Solution Development, Content Delivery, Data Lakes and Analytics, DevOps, E-Commerce, High Performance Computing, Hybrid Cloud Architectures, Internet of Things, AI & Machine Learning, Mobile Services, Modern Application Development, Scientific Computing, Serverless Computing, Websites, Location Services, Security, Maps, Geocoding and Search Routing Fleet Telematics, Geovisualization, Advertising, Data Services and Tracking.
Judging and Prizes
Your projects will be judged on the following criteria: Innovation, Use of Technology and Impact.
Impact: Will this solution have a far reach and market potential?
Innovation: Is the project new and disruptive?
Technical Execution: How has the team effectively utilized the available technologies? How easy is the application to use? How advanced is the prototype presented?
$20,000 Prize Pool!
Grand Prize: $10,000
Runner Up: $5,000
Additional category prizes will also be awarded. Projects that win the Grand Prize and Runner Up are NOT eligible to win the category prizes. Categories are Impact, Innovation, and Technical Execution. All prizes will be divided equally between each member of the winning Team.

Girls in Tech San Diego's 2019 Hacking for Humanity Hackathon

Join Girls in Tech San Diego for our Third Annual Hacking for Humanity, a Hackathon for social good! This year our hacking efforts will be focused on tackling topics that deal with our San Diego Veteran Community.
We’ll be hosted at Amazon’s offices in UTC with mentors and speakers from top San Diego tech companies as well as Veteran advocacy networks! Networking and all meals are included!
This hackathon is beginner-friendly for participants new to coding or hackathons. However, any and all levels are welcome. There are lots of opportunities for non-coders as well - in areas like design, project management, and social entrepreneurship, and public presentation! Hacking for Humanity is a woman-, man-, non-binary-, POC-, and LGBTQ-friendly environment!
You can come with your own team (no more than 5 per team) or let us match you with your complimentary hackers!. Form a team, solve a problem, create something awesome, present it to the audience and win prizes!

This Hackathon exists to enable the rapid prototyping of a complex problem and provide a range of solutions in a short period of time. We will inspire and encourage you to tackle big questions around global change and how we can solve them using technology, while also empowering new entrepreneurs to engage in innovation and development within our tech ecosystem. We are calling all women and men across the globe, including developers, designers, product developers, and entrepreneurs, plus businesses that want to embrace the idea of Social Innovation or initiatives that combine a positive mission with business.
