The SIGFOX network is unleashing the potential of smart city by offering a cellular-grade, low power, low cost public network.  This disruptive technology allows devices to work for 15+ years with a standard battery and makes them so cheap that they can be distributed everywhere in the city. Here are several examples of applications that might tickle your fancy for this hackathon. Feel free to suggest more and think outside the box! Air, Water quality, Noise control, Energy efficiency Setting up ubiquitous sensors will help refine our understanding of where pollution happens, and where to focus efforts to limit its effects for healthier living. Is air quality better in neighborhoods with different transportation mixes? How does the weather affect energy consumption in businesses? Can the City cut its utility bills by smarter use of sensors? Inventory/Fleet management/Sensors on City equipment How can your City operate efficiently, and stream information from all parts of town in real-time to react faster? Monitoring fire hydrants with smart meters will help fix leaks faster, while saving time on overall maintenance. Geotagging equipment will help distributing equipment across government agencies and counties, and streamline operations. What else can you think of? Traffic, transportation, parking, potholes Bad traffic can impede both city-wide business and quality of life of its citizens. How can the City fluidify circulation, regulate parking and optimize the increasingly mixed means of transportations to most efficiently enable everyone to be on their way?  Security Cities strive to keep their streets safe. Would panic buttons city-wide be feasible? How can having ubiquitous sensors reduce crime?  Kids, pets Never lose them again! GPS trackers can now be integrated in ever-smaller form-factors, longer battery life and very low costs.  Seniors, autonomy Can connected sensors help seniors live more autonomous lifestyles? How can the population least engaged on the Internet remain connected through connected "Things"? Art, street art, performance, interactive performance The streets belong to everyone. Let your inspiration flow freely.   Fire detection, Earthquake, flood warning systems, Disaster relief San Francisco has a history with earthquakes and fires. How can these risks be mitigated with the right network of sensors? Can they be used as backup for basic services if the main infrastruture is knocked out of service? Wild animal tracking Raccoons, sometimes even coyotes can make their way into the city. Outfitting some with sensors can help us react better and promote safety. Parks, urban farms, beekeeping You can have a green thumb even in the city. How can connected sensors improve the food we produce, the health of our parks, and balance the fragile ecosystems around our streets?   FAQs What should I bring to the event? What will be provided? IMPORTANT: The TI launchpad programming requires a windows or linux environment. More details will be sent soon. We expect you to bring your laptop, charger, and any existing project if you want to refine an already started prototype. We will send you ahead of time useful software to pre-install so you arrive ready. We will provide test devices and boards, devkits, and all necessary equipment and documentation. We will also keep you well fed, caffeinated and inspired.  If you plan on spending the entire time at the venue, bring a sleeping bag and warm clothing for night-time hacking.  Where can I contact the organizer with any questions? Please contact us using the Eventbrite button on this page. Is my registration/ticket transferrable? Yes, please notify us ahead of time about the change!

We collaborate at events, but also are building an ongoing network of people, resources, and opportunities to help these groups.  Sponsored by Executive Path*  The structure of this event is: Social Enterprises and nonprofits explain a problem they are facing or pitch an idea they are trying to implement. We group them with peers doing work in those areas, and assign the best moderators and do-gooder professionals. Groups hack for just under an hour, and present back the potential solutions and evolutions ideas. After everyone networks and finds great projects to keep working on until the next month’s ThinkThank. Why go? For professional that wants to give more: ThinkThank gives you a easy, fun, and impactful way to give while networking with your peers. DataKind SF Bay Area DataDive #2
                13 Nov - 07:00 PM
                San Francisco, United States
Calling all socially conscious analysts, statisticians, data scientists, coders, hackers, designers, and eager-to-learn do-gooders! A DataDive is a weekend-long, marathon-style events where teams of volunteers rally together to help social change organizations do initial data analysis, exploration, and prototyping. Tickets are open to volunteers of all skill levels. We’re excited to be partnering with 3 amazing organizations: Community Technology Alliance (CTA), San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center (SFCAPC), and Skoll Global Threats. Schedule Friday, November 13th 7:00 PM: Doors open, sign-in 7:30 PM: Opening Remarks 9:00 PM: Reception ends On Friday we all get together to hear a bit from the organizations we'll be working with throughout the weekend. Community Technology Alliance (CTA) - http://www.ctagroup.org/ San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center - http://sfcapc.org/ Skoll Global Threats, Pandemics - http://www.skollglobalthreats.org/global-threats/pandemics/ It's also a great chance to meet the other volunteers you'll be working and you'll have a chance to talk with many people from our partner causes. Plus, there will be snacks and drinks. Not a bad way to spend your Friday night! Saturday, November 14th 8:30 AM: Doors open, sign-in and breakfast 9:00 AM: Brief review from Data Ambassadors, then data diving! 12:30 PM: Lunch 1:15 PM: Open Roundtables 6:00 PM: Dinner 11:00 PM: Everybody goes home for the night Saturday we'll get to the data!  Participants will choose which problems they'd like to work on and form teams around their individual questions.  Each team will have a Data Ambassador assigned to them who will help advise on and manage the projects throughout the day.  We'll have meals and keep the space open until 11PM for any late-night divers. Sunday, November 15th 8:30 AM:  Doors open, breakfast 12:00 PM: Presentations from teams to social organizations 2:00 PM: Another successful DataDive in the books! This is your chance to show the world what you have done with data!  There is no expectation of slides or other presentation materials, simply use whatever method of conveying your work to the organizations you feel is best.  This is also the chance for our partner NGOs to better understand what your team did. These presentations can be single or group work, but they can be no longer than 10 minutes each.  We want to give everyone a chance to speak, and get people out at a reasonable time. FAQs Unlike a hackathon, the goal is not (necessarily) to create an app.  Instead it is to work with teams of experts to understand a truly difficult problem through data.  You could end up with a visualization, an analysis, some graphs, or even just some new datasets by the end of the event, and all of those are fantastic results! We do not assign you to a problem.  We want you to work with the problem and data you feel most passionate about, so come Friday with an open mind and be ready to learn. You do not have to stay the entire weekend to participate in the event.  We hope that you will find a project you can dig into, but you are always welcome to come and go as you please. You do not have to work on the same project for the whole weekend.  Again, we hope that you will find a project to work on to completion, but if at any point you feel like you want to change simply let the ambassador from those teams know. We do not provide any hardware or software for you to use.  We'll have the data and some services set up (wiki, DropBox, Github), but otherwise you should bring your own laptop and come ready to use whatever data tools you like. Can't wait to see you all there!
