Super Happy Dev House #NYC1
23 Sep - 06:00 PM
Brooklyn, United States
In the future, humans will live in dense hyperbuildings called arcologies, sustainably integrated into our environments, made of modern materials. How do we design our physical spaces to be configurable and programmable? What cryptocoins and autonomous contracts will fund and govern our art collectives? What kinds of stories or music or art will we perform for each other using tools ancient and post-apocalyptic? Bring your imagination, your laptop, your music makers, or your art supplies to explore with us. Write a story, make some songs, code some code. This is a hacker after-party in Bushwick for the World Maker Faire in nearby Queens. We will discuss progress toward building a real-life Arcology here in NYC as a co-created, self-modifying home, where researchers, crafters, artists, coders, hackers, makers, startuppers, carpenters, gardeners, cooks, and poets can thrive together. Here's what you can expect Super Happy Dev House is an inclusive event intended for creative and curious people interested in technology. We're about knowledge sharing, technology exploration, and ad-hoc collaboration. Come to have fun, build things, learn things, and meet new people. It's called hacker culture, and we're here to encourage it. Hacking is not just limited to software projects: design, electronics, coffee, robots, artsy craftsy things, 3D printing, are all welcome. We'll have comfy couches, plenty of tables and desks, power strips, fast wifi, a spacious rooftop, and some great people to hack with. Please bring a project to work on, or be prepared to help someone else with their project! Unlike normal hackathons, you are encouraged to work on weird ideas with no business plan and to continue work on existing projects to push them even further. We will begin at 6pm right after World Maker Faire in nearby Queens, and go all night through to Sunday morning. You are free to come and go throughout the evening, and sleeping bags/pads are welcome to spend the night! On Saturday night, we'll start rounding up volunteers to give 5 minute lightning talks at 10pm. Super Happy Dev House is organized by the Invisible College, a distributed research lab and arcology-in-the-making. It follows in a line of hacker parties from Seattle hosted by Kathleen Tuite, Adam Smith, and Paul Pham.

AT&T: Free "Intro to 360 Video & Virtual Reality" workshops, Sept 18, New York - AFTERNOON & EVENING sessions
      18 Sep - 12:30 PM
      New York, United States
See why almost 5,000 people have attended AT&T Workshops! 360 video and virtual reality are two of the hottest topics in entertainment right now, and what better way to get an overview of them than a free, 3-hour, hands-on AT&T workshop. Whether you are involved in filmmaking or video content creation, are a developer that wants to know about VR, or are just curious to know more about immersive 360-degree worlds, then this intro is for you! These 3-hour workshops are composed of two parts: instruction and hands-on labs.  The instructor explains the different types of “360 worlds,” whether virtual or not, and how they differ from regular stills & video, gives you an overview of the equipment needed to capture 360 video, and covers the techniques of shooting 360, including some of the unique challenges for moviemakers. For the hands-on labs, the instructor will go through a lab exercise, then give you time to do it yourself, while experts walk around to help anyone that is having problems. NO CODING IS REQUIRED   To do the following labs you will need to bring either a Windows or Mac laptop   1) adding informational elements to an existing 360 image   2) distribution of a 360 video   3) using the Unity platform to create a simple VR app by adding an interactive virtual element to a 360 image using drag-and-drop elements and scripts that we provide. Note that if you want to do the Unity lab yourself YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL UNITY PRIOR to arriving for the workshop. Instructions are shown below.    When you walk out of the workshop you will understand the elements and workflow needed to create a virtual world yourself.    Put on by AT&T and NextGen Interactions, the 3-hour, hands-on Intro to 360 Video and Virtual Reality workshop is free, but attendance is limited so register soon.  WE ARE HOLDING 2 IDENTICAL SESSIONS, so choose the one that works best for you. Since we expect to fill both workshops we ask that you only register for one session. AFTERNOON: Mon, Sept 18 (same as evening session) Registration: 12:30 – 1 Workshop: 1 – 4  EVENING: Mon, Sept 18 (same as afternoon session) Registration: 5:30 - 6 Workshop: 6 - 9  PHOTO ID REQUIRED TO GET INTO VENUE   In cooperation with the NY Indie Filmmakers and NYC VR University meetups.   Join the AT&T New York Tech & Entertainment - Workshops & Competitions meetup to stay up to date on future AT&T events.  Visit our website to sign up for the AT&T Developer Program and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up-to-date on all of our free events from hackathons and filmmaking experiences, to workshops like this “Intro to 360 video and Virtual Reality.”   -----------------------------------------------  Installing Unity We will not be going through the Unity installation during the workshop.  Unity install is entirely OPTIONAL and only required if you want to repeat the instructor steps during the lab. Setup must be done PRIOR to the workshop if you want to do the lab.   If you wish to just observe the instructor, then you do not need to install Unity. To install Unity, go to this link: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive Look for Unity 5.6.1. To the right of Unity 5.6.1, click on the dropdown menu for Downloads (Win). Then click Unity Installer. Other versions of Unity might not look the same as the lab book or support the same functionality.    Doing this will redirect you to a download link, click Save File.   Once the download is complete, go to the download location and run the installer. To do the lab in the lab exercise book, the minimal install is Unity and Standard Assets.  Installing other components is at your discretion and may significantly increase install space required and time to install.   Follow the instructions it gives until completed.
