88Nine Radio Milwaukee has joined forces with the Capitol360 Innovation Center for 88Nine Labs: Music Hackathon presented by Northwestern Mutual and powered by the Capitol360 Innovation Center. This Hackathon will take place the last weekend of Startup Week Milwaukee and will be held at the brand new Cream City Labs inside Northwestern Mutual in downtown Milwaukee. We invite developers, designers, and musicians to generate ideas for music discovery, music distribution, connecting fans with their favorite artists, how radio stations like 88Nine can help fans learn more about the music they love and discover new music. 88Nine Labs, in partnership with the ACLU of Wisconsin, is hosting a civic hackathon on November 3-4 at Ward4 MKE prior to the Midterm Elections. The goal of this hackathon is to develop ideas using technology and open data to create solutions to better inform and educate local citizens about their city, state and national government. The goal of this event is to bring together a group of diverse people with skills in coding, graphic design, storytelling, and visual data analysis to create tools that will promote civic education, transparency, and accountability in government. This hackathon was inspired by the Hack4Democracy hackathon hosted by the MIT GOV/LAB last year. The hackathon will kick off Saturday morning (Nov. 3) at 10 a.m., where the ACLU of Wisconsin will present the challenges that they’re facing and the solutions they’re looking for. Following the presentation, participants will form teams of five or fewer to problem solve using election and civic engagement data from the city of Milwaukee. Hacking will continue on November 4 for most of the day. Then, beginning at 5:30 p.m., teams will begin presenting their work. If you have your own idea that involves solutions to better inform and educate local citizens about their government, you can work on those as well. You can even work on the ideas prior to hackathon. The teams will have full ownership of everything they build at our event. We’d prefer it if you make your project open source, but this decision is to be made by your team. If you make your project open source, we ask you to provide a link to the project so we can share it with the public. Food and coffee will be provided on both days for all participants. Challenges ACLU Challenge: Help create a tool to inform people of their rights when stopped by the police (data here: https://www.aclu-wi.org/sites/default/files/wysiwyg/2012_mke_kyrpocketguide.pdf) and make it more simple for them to file a complaint with the Milwaukee Fire & Police Commission. What tools can improve grassroots mobilization efforts? For example, know what bills and policies that elected official vote on, or tool to track campaign finances - City of Milwaukee recently launched an open data portal. On June 9 - 10, 88Nine Labs, presented by Northwestern Mutual, will host its first hackathon of 2018, inspired by the announcement of Backline, which is an accelerator for musicians in the Milwaukee area.  The hackathon will take on challenges to help the local music scene with booking, performance & creation, engaging with fans, distribution and more. 88Nine Labs invites coders, designers, and musicians to collaborate on these challenges to help musicians, venues, and the entire local music scene from Saturday, June 9 through Sunday, June 10. All projects and Intellectual Property built and developed at this event belong completely to the teams. However, to generate the widest benefit from this event, we encourage attendees to provide Open Source licenses for the results of their work. Parking available on the street What is a hackathon? Hacking is creative problem solving. A hackathon is any event of any duration where people come together to solve problems. Most hackathons I’ve run also have a parallel track for workshops. Participants typically form groups of about 2-5 individuals, take out their laptops (if the event is technology themed), and dive into problems. Training workshops are a great parallel track especially for newcomers but also for all participants.

This tour will exercise your imagination! There are 45 acres of vacant land in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley right in the heart of the city. Like former vacant sites in the Valley, there are big ideas for these sites that would benefit the greater Milwaukee community. On this 1 mile walk, we’ll view a portion of the current riverwalk, hike on the rocky terrain of an area planned for the riverwalk extension, and see what could come to 11 vacant acres near the Harley-Davidson Museum. A daylong design charrette, like a hackathon for architects, created a vision for these sites that meets multiple objectives – job-producing manufacturing with tourism and retail for an economic boost, green infrastructure that protects our waters while also enhancing the riverfront, a proposed Riverwalk, public art to provide a vibrant feel, floating docks to activate the river, and more. This tour is for you if you want to see spaces before they are transformed, share your ideas on how to address the many goals to benefit the community, or just get a glimpse into the planning of large developments. We will start the walk at The Sigma Group and then walk the perimeter of the Kneelands Properties, which is planned to be an extension of the Milwaukee RiverWalk. This is a vacant lot with rocky, uneven terrain. Please wear hiking boots or close toed shoes. See you rain or shine! About this walk's organizers: Dave Misky works for the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee to eliminate blighting conditions that inhibit neighborhood reinvestment, to promote job creation, and to facilitate new business and housing development. Dave manages all sizes of developments from small vacant residential lots to major developments. Michelle Kramer works with Menomonee Valley Partners (MVP), a nonprofit working to revitalize Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley.
