Come get on the ground floor. GRID110, the Standard Hotel and the LA UX Meetup are joining forces to host one of the coolest Hackathons you'll ever see. Hackers will spend the night at the iconic DTLA hotel to come up with a FashionTech wearables prototype. Teams of 4 will present their prototype to a killer panel of judges, and the top teams will walk away with some amazing prizes! We're looking for fashion designers, programmers, engineers and industry market specialists. Unlike other Hacks, teams will not only mock up a Minimally Viable Product (MVP), but explain how their idea will penetrate and dominate the market. Presentations will begin at 4pm on December 6th during the cocktail mixer where Hackers can show their prototype, meet other cool techies and unwind after a crazy night. Sign up and let's get you on a team! Judges Carinda Bourgeois (Regional Director, Keiretsu Forum) Amanda Coolong (Worldwide Women's Initiatives, IBM Cloud Ecosystem Development) David Dea (Founding Partner, PurCraft and Professor, FIDM) Nick Gaige (Casting Director, previously casted for Season 7 of Shark Tank) Dori Howard (Founder, Wade & Belle) Mike Macadaan (Founder, This Is Ground & Co-Founder, Science) Noel Saw (Head, LA UX Meetup) Jason White (VP Marketing, Beats By Dre) Things To Remember • We will be building prototype mock-ups, NOT actual products. Hack Teams can present schematics, blueprints, websites, 3D mock-ups, slide presentations, etc. All Hack Teams will present their work on a simple website or presentation platform that will be screened to the audience during the Mixer at the end of the Hackathon. • Hack Teams of 3-4 will be decided by GRID110/Standard Hotel. The point of the Hackathon is to inspire community and team-building in the DTLA FashionTech community. Interested Hackers can sign up according to their interests and skill sets. GRID110 will alert attendees of their Team leading up to the event. • This is a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) event. Hackers are asked to bring their own laptops, hard drives, software, cloud storage, etc. The Standard Hotel will provide basics such as electricity, snacks, A/V equipment for presentations and other event amenities. GRID110/Standard Hotel will not be responsible for any lost, stolen or broken equipment, so it's important to safeguard your valuables. • Hack Teams can bring in materials to mock-up a real prototype, provided such a mock-up does not require hazardous materials or fabrication, or any activity that would reasonably be considered disruptive or dangerous in a public hotel. Furthermore, such a mock-up will not give Hack Teams a special advantage in judging. • Hack Teams will be required to present their mock-up during the judging portion of the Mixer. Teams will be asked questions about design, construction, materials, production viability, market viability, business plans and so on. Judges will decide the winners of the Hackathon at their sole discretion. • There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for Hack teams. All prizes are gifted at the sole discretion of GRID110/Standard Hotel and are subject to change. • There will be a strict code of conduct during the Hackathon. Abusive, sexually explicit, bullying, discriminatory, hateful or otherwise unfriendly behavior toward fellow Hackers, judges, organizers or others' property will not be tolerated. Any attendees who display such behavior will be asked to leave, and their Attendance Fee will not be refunded. • By signing up for the Hackathon, and paying the Attendance Fee, you consent to the above. ProtoHack - The Code Free Hackathon For Designers & Business People - Los Angeles, CA
      21 Nov - 09:30 AM
      Pasadena, United States
ProtoHack exists to show non-coders that they can create something amazing from nothing. We empower and enable the non-technical community with the tools, knowledge and connections that will help bring their idea to life and visually communicate it through prototyping. How does it work? No coding is required. Instead you will use prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you can think of to VISUALLY demo your idea on stage. (We’ve put together the best tools for non-coders, so don’t fret if you’ve never prototyped.) Although we encourage you to try some prototyping tools prior to attending ProtoHack, we will begin ProtoHack with optional educational workshops on how to use some of the top prototyping tools. You can choose to prototype alone or form a team with other participants and decide on an idea together. Teams can be up to 5 people. You will have 9 hours to produce a prototype. (Remember, you are creating a lean prototype of your idea and it doesn't need to be perfect. The focus should be on visually showing what the idea is.) At the end, you or your team will present on stage to a panel of judges consisting of developers and investors to get feedback. Looking for the Agenda? Click here Interested in speaking at ProtoHack? Are you a non-technical founder or entrepreneur?  Learn more about ProtoHack and how to become our Los Angeles Keynote speaker by emailing us at info@protohack.org. ProtoHack is a 501(c)(3) and cannot pay their speakers.  What's in it for me?   ProtoHack will be a 12-hour experience where you will build a prototype that communicates an idea visually. Learn how to effectively use industry leading tools to put together a prototype and visually communicate your idea. Meet other like-minded people with various backgrounds in design, business, marketing, product management and more who are all excited and passionate about building something.  Become a better product person with a deeper understanding of UX. Exclusive access to over $200 in prototyping tools and sponsor related goodies. We will also invite developers who are looking for new projects, to come and watch the presentations so they have a no-pressure opportunity to contact you if they’re interested in helping you actually code your prototype.    Learn more about ProtoHack by visiting our website.

THE HACKATHON IS COMPLETELY SOLD OUT! Hackathon to empower female students with focus on immersive journalism There’s a serious gender gap in both the journalism and technology industries — especially in business and leadership roles. Then the students will break into teams to create their own startup ideas aroundimmersive journalism and VR, presenting them to judges on Sunday. Female faculty and professionals from around the country will serve as team facilitators and mentors. Undergraduate and grad students are welcome to participate. The weekend event is MediaShift’s second Women’s Hackathon after last year’s bi-coastal blow-out, with a hackathon at West Virginia University and panel at Google in Silicon Valley. This year’s event is sponsored by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and WVU’s Reed College of Media. The West Virginia University Reed College of Media combines innovative curriculum with real-world, immersive experiences for journalism, strategic communications and media students. The Hackathon is also sponsored by Mozilla OpenNews. OpenNews connects a global network of developers, journalists, makers and hackers to collaborate on innovative code and new ideas. We believe a community of peers working, learning and solving problems together can create the tools journalism needs to thrive on the open Web. Keep up with that community via our website Source. HOW THE HACKATHON WORKS From the students, faculty and pros assembled, we’ll create “dream teams” with a mix of necessary disciplines — content, design, technology and business — who will learn to work together in the crucible of the Hackathon. The weekend will be a combination of focused talks and training from innovation leaders and experts, work sessions and final presentations of solutions from each team. Faculty and industry experts will provide expertise to each team and help them rapidly develop their product or concept. Teams will envision, map and pitch a startup in immersive journalism and VR that can deliver a singular idea, product, service, or process to serve the public in journalism. Rather than be a traditional Hackathon focused on coding and building, this one will be about collaboration, team-building and entrepreneurship. HOST SCHOOL The Hackathon will be hosted by the USC Annenberg School of Journalism and Communication, bringing in female college students from the region and around the country to invent and envision their role and influence in an emerging technology market. The emerging market the Hackathon will focus on is immersive journalism and VR, and the event will include a crash course in virtual reality gear such as Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard. The program will take place in the new Wallis Annenberg Hall: WHO? This is a female-only hackathon for any female college students to participate on teams, with female faculty and professionals serving as team facilitators and mentors. The goal is to help the students invent and envision their role in an emerging technology market. No prior technology experience is required. So far, we have the following schools represented at the Hackathon, with either faculty and/or students attending: USC Annenberg University of Virginia University of Wisconsin University of California at Davis Arizona State University Howard University Quinnipiac University West Virginia University Boston University Northern Arizona University University of California at Berkeley University of Missouri Northwestern University Stanford University University of Texas at Austin American University University of Arizona University of Nevada-Reno University of San Francisco Morgan State University REGISTRATION Registration costs $129 for professionals and $79 for students. He moved here to become general manager of KROQ, a career path begun at Yale's campus radio station. He also has been an award-winning advertising writer, done voice-overs, and owned a small radio recording studio on Main Street. McKeown now serves local children and teachers as Macintosh computer consultant for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. On the Council, where he is in his fifth term, McKeown focuses especially on affordable housing and environmental sustainability. He devotes much time and energy to responding to residents, and his leadership in helping people become more involved in local governance is longstanding. McKeown came to the Council after chairing a neighborhood group, serving on the Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights steering committee, and sharing his professional expertise as a founder of the city's Public Electronic Network (PEN) and member of the Santa Monica Telecommunications Working Group. McKeown has helped engage regional cities in working together on issues of homelessness, which he brought to the table as Santa Monica's alternate to the Westside Cities Council of Governments. He is an elected member of the Democratic Party State Central Committee, and Southern California vice-chair of the party’s Irish-American caucus. He has twice (2010 and 2013) been named our Assembly District Democrat of the Year. McKeown is committed to protecting Santa Monicans' quality of life. Understanding the link between pressures for overdevelopment and private political donations, McKeown continues to work in support of community efforts for local campaign finance reform.     Rick ColeCity Manager, City of Santa Monica City Manager Rick Cole has 30 years of experience in public policy and administration. He has been recognized as one of America's Public Officials of the Year by Governing Magazine and one of the "Top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers" by Government Technology Magazine. He has won awards for municipal management excellence from the American Society of Public Administrators and the Municipal Management Association of Southern California, as well as for urban planning leadership from the Congress for the New Urbanism. Mr. Cole served 12 years on the Pasadena City Council and was Mayor when Pasadena adopted its landmark General Plan, an early model for smart growth. Called "one of Southern California's most visionary planning thinkers" by the Los Angeles Times, he has been an active leader in the International City Managers Association and the City Managers Department of the League of California Cities.
