Startup Weekend Education (SW-EDU)
Have you ever had an idea for improving education? Here's your opportunity to transform your education ideas into action in 54 hours. Find the right people with complementary skills & the passion & to work with and learn along the way. No tech skills required! Test your idea with real potential customers and receive coaching from community experts in industry & education. Join a community ready to help you take your concept to the next level!
We're looking for passionate educators, parents, students, developers, designers and business/non-profit professionals who want to make a difference in education now. Come learn the basics of founding and launching a successful education or EdTech venture while solving real problems in education.
You can participate just for the experience -- serious creative thinking, inspired work, and a lot of fun! And some teams go on to launch their ventures, like these recently in Oakland:
Talking Points, which was hatched at a previous Oakland Startup Weekend EDU and further developed in partnership with Oakland teachers and public schools, just received $250,000 as a finalist in the Google Impact Challenge/Bay Area!
Epic, a San Francisco Startup Weekend EDU winner, went on to found a real school, receive $600,000 of startup funding, and open in Oakland Unified!
The event:
We bring together a diverse group of people passionate about making a positive impact on education. In 54 hours, participants share ideas, form teams, build products and launch education or EdTech ventures.
Startup Weekend EDU begins with open-mic 60-second pitches Friday night that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend Saturday and Sunday focusing on developing and validating their ideas and target users and customers, building demo prototypes and models (optional, not required), and developing a high level business plan and pitch presentation, with the help of experienced coaches. On Sunday, teams demo or pitch their education solutions and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges.
All kinds of education related ventures may be pitched, so be innovative, and think big and high impact! If your idea is for an EdTech product company, for example for a software/SaaS application or tool that a teacher or student would use, a working product prototype or demo is optional, not required; you can just pitch the idea, perhaps a mockup design, and proposed features/functionality ... i.e. while some teams may develop a demo like in a hack-a-thon, you do not need to do that.
Here are some of the things you get from attending:
+ breakfast with delicious coffee form our Sponsor Peets Coffee Alameda, and full lunch and dinner, for the whole weekend (if you just buy a ticket for the Sunday evening pitch presentations, Sunday dinner is not included so please eat before or bring some food for yourself)
+ Unigue opportunity to be mentored and coached by EdTech and educator leaders
+ A network of new developer, designer & entrepreneur friends that are also excited about improving education
+ A free .co domain name
The Winning Team will receive:
+ 90 minute in-person consultation session with Gloria Lee, CEO of Educate78 and former President/COO of NewSchools Venture Fund, to provide feedback on the team’s plan or product and suggestions for increasing attractiveness to prospective donors or investors.
+ an automatic interview with education startup accelerator ImagineK12
+ Free mobile app design by award-winning design agency, PLATFORM
+ 1 year subscription to the Ominox product
+ 6 month access pass to I-Gate
+ 1 month ORG25 membership at co-working space Impact Hub Oakland

GALA FUNDRAISER
Gala Time: 6pm - 9pm
After-Party: 9pm-11pm
Join us on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Marines’ Memorial Club in San Francisco to celebrate Veterans' Day and our 1st Annual Vets 2.0 “Beyond the Transition” Fall Gala in support of VetsinTech. The gala will be filled with Fall magic that will include a sponsor reception, dinner, entertainment, awards, raffles and both live and silent auctions. The dress code will be semi-formal.Funding is met through donations received from individuals, service groups, businesses and corporations. The incredible ongoing support of the community helps us to continually enhance our innovative and effective programs for veterans in the technology eco-system.
VETERAN'S STRUGGLE TO FIND EMPLOYMENT
About 2.6 million Americans have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. But the people who have made some of the greatest sacrifices in the post-9/11 era, also are the ones struggling the most with unemployment today. While the latest national jobless figure is 7.2 percent, the rate for new veterans is much higher -- 9.7 percent. With the end of the war in Iraq and the current drawdown in Afghanistan, more than 1 million service members either have left the military or are projected to transition out in the next five years. We work hard to match veterans with unfilled jobs in high tech. Our education programs also help our veterans translate skills learned in the military to the tech workplace & communicate their qualifications to prospective employers.
EDUCATION
Here at VetsinTech we feel passionate about the education of our veterans. We are focused on those vets that already have shown an interest and aptitude for working in the tech industry. That is not just around coding, but operations, project management, product management, legal, business, marketing and finance or other fields within the tech industry. When veterans return from their service, they bring with them an amazing set of skills such as leadership, strong work ethic, and teamwork.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
We realize that not all returning veterans want to get a job in the industry and some would rather work for themselves. Around half (48%) of returning veterans would prefer to start their own businesses. At VetsinTech, we organize various entrepreneur programs including hackathons, pitch events, visionary and leadership speaker series, local meetups and networking events, and business plan competitions.
ABOUT VETSINTECH
VetsinTech is an independent non-profit organization made up of technology industry leaders and former men and women in service who support our current and returning veterans with re-integration services, and by connecting them to the national technology ecosystem. ViT is committed to bringing together a tech-specific network, resources, and programs for our veterans interested in Education, Entrepreneurship, and Employment – the 3E’s!
VetsinTech has grown to 12 veteran led chapters across the U.S. in just 3 years, gained support from approximately 20 of top tech companies to hire veterans and developed training programs with tech ecosystems that hire thousands of veterans. As a result of funding VetsinTech, there is now a community of thousands of veterans both interested and working in technology careers - many helping future returning veterans into tech jobs around the country. VetsinTech has been recognized by the White House and Department of Labor for our innovation and leadership in creating new programs for veterans in entrepreneurship, employment, and education and have received two Certificates of Honor from the City and County of San Francisco.
Your support is greatly needed to meet the demand of our returning veterans and help them achieve a higher quality of life.

Pro Bono Resource Fair
29 Oct - 01:00 PM
San Francisco, United States
This year, for Pro Bono Week, Taproot Foundation will partner once again with the Foundation Center to host a Pro Bono Resource Fair on October 29th from 1pm-4pm. This is a special program for Bay Area nonprofits, pro bono providers, and corporations designed to introduce attendees to the wealth of pro bono resources in our region. Nonprofit organizations will be able to visit provider booths to learn more about their pro bono programs. Providers will be able to promote their services and connect with nonprofits and other mission based organizations. Companies that are new to pro bono will have the opportunity to learn from their more seasoned counterparts. And everyone will be empowered to offer or source high quality pro bono services.
Simultaneously during the Resource Fair, Taproot will host small-group, moderated “pop up discussions” on topics such as:
To Pro Bono or Not to Pro Bono: When and how to consider your talent as you consider your CSR strategy
Translating Tech Talent to Meet Nonprofit Needs
Empowered or Depowered by Pro Bono: Nonprofits share what worked and what didn’t work when utilizing pro bono resources
Hacking the Hackathon: Reimagining short-term, high-impact models of engagement
This program is taking place during Pro Bono Week, a global celebration of the pro bono ethic across all professions that use their talents to make a difference. Inspired by the American Bar Association, Taproot works with partners around the globe to focus attention on the pro bono movement each year during the last week of October.
