Megawatts to Bitcoin : Mining in Theory and in Practice
31 May - 07:00 PM
San Francisco, United States
THURSDAY@NODE Presents: Megawatts to Bitcoin : Mining in Theory and in Practice
Doors at 7PM: Talk beings 8PM
Bitcoin mining takes as much electricity as the entire country of Czech Republic. The first and ultimate Proof of Work algorithm envisioned by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 spawned a global race for cheap electricity, development of specialized ASIC mining machines and a land grab to build specialized data centers for mining.
In this talk we will go over the basics: the SHA256 algo, basic ASIC infrastructure, what does it take to run a mine, regulatory and environmental concerns, the cost of entry and generally the do's and dont's.
"The proof-of-work involves scanning for a value that when hashed, such as with SHA-256, the hash begins with a number of zero bits. The average work required is exponential in the number of zero bits required and can be verified by executing a single hash. For our timestamp network, we implement the proof-of-work by incrementing a nonce in the block until a value is found that gives the block's hash the required zero bits."
- Satoshi Nakamoto 2009

Going Public: Is Scaling Innovation in Government Really Achievable?
22 May - 06:30 PM
United States
The buzz around Innovation in government continues to grow. Across every level, there is a proliferation of efforts to replicate the US Digital Service model, fellows programs, seed funds, incubators, labs, hackathons, etc. But what is really being achieved by all of this innovation activity? How do we know government is serious about innovating at the scale required to match the demands of a digital age?
An amazing panel of experts will discuss the successes and challenges they are experiencing as they advance innovation in government:
Jen Pahlka is the founder of Code for America, which is a non-profit organization building software used by millions of California citizens to access government programs like CalFresh, the state’s food assistance program, and other services. She also helped found the United States Digital Service in 2014 during her time as Deputy Chief Technology Officer at the White House.
George P. Bush is the Commissioner of the General Land Office, which is the oldest existing statewide agency in Texas. Among his responsibilities is overseeing the delivery of disaster recovery services, which has emerged as a massive undertaking following the Hurricane Harvey disaster of 2017. More than $125 Billion in damages were inflicted and 30,000 Texans displaced by the cyclone.
Raj Shah is a technology entrepreneur, investor and an F-16 pilot in the Air National Guard. Most recently he was the Managing Partner of the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx). Launched in 2015 to provide non-dilutive investments in commercial products that solve national defence problems, DIUx represents a new model for deploying part of the Pentagon’s nearly $700 Billion budget.

Thurs@NODE: Holochain: The Human-Centered Internet
17 May - 07:00 PM
San Francisco, United States
Do you feel like the web is pulling you in a thousand different directions every day? Most of us do. We are pinged constantly by applications whose business models depend upon getting us addicted to their services. This is an internet that stalks us rather than serves us, and it is a side-effect of the way the web works today. Holochain is a new way of building and running truly peer-to-peer applications that don't require web servers because they operate entirely on the devices of the users themselves, and put people, rather than companies, in control. As the internet begins to revolve around people instead of companies, what will that make possible?Matthew Schutte, Director of Communications, Holo.hostMatthew works on Holochain, a new way of building and running applications that puts people in control of their digital lives. Holochain enables a new pattern of communication that empowers individuals, fosters trust and helps build thriving communities. Inspired by the design patterns of natural living systems, Holochain applications are faster, more scalable and 10,000 times cheaper than blockchain approaches.About Node:Come to San Francisco’s newest private members club and gain insider knowledge on the exploding blockchain and crypto industry and enjoy networking with like-minded people.Doors open at 7:00pm; talk starts at 8.00pm.Drinks will be provided and additional wine can be enjoyed at Maritime below Node.Become a member of Node: Node membership provides you with a place to hang out, work, create, and communicate. It is not competitive, the emphasis is on making it back to the Pergola at Lake Merritt after the run and SOCIALIZE !!!
What is a Hackathon?
Hackathons have been used by companies like Google and Facebook as well as other Silicon valley companies as a mechanism of bringing software engineers together to produce a new product within 24-48 hours. Several groups participate and compete for a prize. The organizers provide people with food, mentorships and the judges of the Hackathon (who may be investors, etc.) choose the best solutions. The Hackathon is an approach to create new projects and ideas collaboratively.
What is a Social Impact Hackathon?
Social Impact Hackathons are Hackathons with measurable impacts. Participants have 30 days to deliver their solutions to their users once the Hackathon is over to be qualified to win the big prize. It is a very important tool for development. It can be used in the strict sense to produce softwares to solve practical problems, and it can also be used to create collaborative solutions to problems. Social Impact Hackathons can be used to develop solutions to water scarcity, gun violence, how to control population growth, design of mechanisms to allow people to improve their lives and skills (adjust to changing job market situation) and other social problems
