ProtoHack exists to show entrepreneurs that they can create something amazing from nothing without having to write a single line of code. We empower and enable the non-technical community with the tools, knowledge, and know-how that will help bring their idea to life and visually communicate it through prototyping.  The theme of this protohack will be AR/VR! ProtoHack requires no coding. Instead, you’ll be using prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you think of to visually demo your idea on stage. Competitors will work in teams (up to 5) or solo. ProtoHack is a 12-hour experience where you will build a prototype that communicates an idea visually. Christopher Peri (Director of AR/VR in Samsung) Christopher had worked on 3D and VR starting with the VFX1 back in 1995 including teaching a class on VRML. His master thesis at UC Berkeley, 'Spatial Perception in Virtual Environments: Visual Cognition Gain with Head Mounted Displays' focused on how spatial perception and memory are improved using a HMD. This work was a foundation for his Ph.D. in Spatial Communication. His professional work includes creating many virtual worlds using VRML and Java and then employed those skills to dynamic web content using Flash. Later in his career he focused on project management to company leadership including 3 years as CTO at VentureBeat. Currently Christopher has returned to his roots working at Samsung Research Lab working on mobile strategy and business development for various VR/AR projects. In 2014 he took over new business development responsibilities for Android, IoT, and VR where he managed technology and content partnerships for products such as Google Cardboard, the world's largest VR platform. Before joining Google, Steven was Vice President of Business Operations at Apture (acquired by Google). Prior to Apture, Steven was with venture firms Clearstone and Redpoint where he helped incubate multiple companies including the online video technology company Ankeena Networks (acquired by Juniper). Steven began in online media at Overture (acquired by Yahoo) where he helped start and grow the contextual advertising business to a $100 million run rate. Steven studied Applied Physics at Yale and has an MBA from UCLA Anderson where he was Venture Fellow. Developers, designers and data scientists in the Bay Area! CMU Emirates Innovation Lab invites you to participate in the Emirates Travel Hackathon. In this 24-hour coding marathon, you will be challenged to build innovative new travel-centric web and mobile apps. This year's theme is ‘inspiring insights and personalized customer experiences with data, machine learning, and AI’.

This event is completely code free. Instead you will use prototyping tools, drag and drop editors, mockups, wireframes and anything else you can think of to VISUALLY demo your idea on stage. (We’ve put together the best tools for non-coders, so don’t fret if you’ve never prototyped.) We encourage you visit our learning page to learn the different prototyping tools available out there before coming to the event. You'll have ample time to learn, but the more you prepare for this event the better experience you'll have.  You can choose to prototype alone or form a team with other participants and decide on an idea together. Teams can be up to 5 people. Prototyping/hacking will start around 11a and you'll have until 745p to submit your idea. (Remember, you are creating a lean prototype of your idea and it doesn't need to be perfect. The focus should be on visually showing what the idea is.) At the end, you or your team will present on stage to a panel of judges consisting of developers and investors to get feedback. ProtoHack will be a 12-hour experience where you will build a prototype that communicates an idea visually. Come and collaborate in a team of up to four students to solve a problem presented to participants during the opening ceremony. The winning team's solution will be considered for formal development and implementation as an official City application.

He earned a PhD in computer science from Brandeis University and a BS in electrical engineering from Caltech. Prateek Joshi is an Artificial Intelligence researcher, a published author of 6 books, and a TEDx speaker. He is the founder of Pluto AI, a venture-funded Silicon Valley startup building an analytics platform for water resource management powered by Deep Learning. His work in this field has led to patents, tech demos, and research papers at major IEEE conferences. He has been an invited speaker at technology and entrepreneurship conferences including TEDx, AT&T Foundry, Silicon Valley Deep Learning, and Open Silicon Valley.  His tech blog (www.prateekjoshi.com) has received 1.2M+ page views from 200+ countries and has 6,600+ followers. He is now the CEO and Co-Founder of InfiniGraph a video deep learning company. Chase has held positions at Hearst Corp, Chase Manhattan, Oracle and Sprint.  He was awarded the Fast Tech 50 for his first Startup UNBOUND and won the Marketing Sherpa Viral Hall Of Fame award for a video contesting platform. Chase's focus is on machine learning and real time video analysis using deep learning for large digital and TV broadcasters.  @chasemcmichael Mr. Zong Ling, Ph. D., is currently a Senior Software Engineer / Scientist in IBM Almaden Research Center, located in San Francisco Bay Area (the Silicon Valley) of Northern California, USA.  Dr. Ling has been working at IBM Almaden Research Center for about 20 years, with primary focus on performance evaluation of IBM data storage products.  Dr. Ling engages in customer services globally through troubleshooting data storage issues, providing technical training classes, and publishing IBM whitepapers.  Dr. Ling's current interests are in the areas of FinTech/Blockchain, Cognitive Business, Big Data Storage and Analytics, Cloud Computing Architecture, Service Science, Internet of Things, and Information Technology Service Management. As an IBM University ambassador and evangelist of IBM corporate culture with many years of expertise on information technology engineering and services, Dr. Ling has not only provided academic lectures locally at Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, and San Jose State University, but also have taught credited courses overseas and hosted numerous seminars at top universities in China.  In recognition of his contributions to the community, Dr. Ling has been a recipient of the United States President's Volunteer Service Award for the past 10 years.  He holds a  Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a BS from the University of Science and Technology of China.
