      California Water Data Hackathon
      14 Sep - 10:00 AM
      Berkeley, United States
The Division of Data Sciences at UC Berkeley and Berkeley Institute for Data Science are hosting the California Water Data Hackathon to challenge students by finding innovative ways to increase community access to safe drinking water, understand vulnerabilities, and identify and deploy solutions. The California Water Data Hackathon is one of the efforts that is supporting the California Safe Drinking Water Data Challenge. On any given day in California, around 200,000 Californians turn on their taps and the water that comes out is unsafe to drink and may be unsafe to use for basic needs like bathing. Annually, up to 1 million Californians lack access to clean, safe drinking water at some point during the year. Droughts and other disruptions in water supply can limit or eliminate access to safe drinking water for days, months, or years. Some communities have been exposed to unsafe water for more than a decade. Small water systems and domestic well users are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in their access to safe drinking water. While the most publicized examples are in rural areas of the state, delivering sufficient, safe, and affordable drinking water poses a challenge to small systems and domestic well users in almost every region of the state. Many of the most vulnerable systems and domestic well users rely primarily on groundwater for their water supply. More details here about the challenge: http://waterchallenge.data.ca.gov/

            10 Sep - 04:00 PM
            San Francisco, United States
WE BREAK IT, YOU FIX IT! PagerDuty Breakathon is a bit like a hackathon, but with a twist! Instead of building stuff against APIs, your challenge will be to put on your SRE/ops hat and debug and fix “real" incidents. Participants will work in teams of 2-4 people and compete with each other to correctly diagnose and fix problems with web applications. CONTEST DETAILS At its core, the Breakathon is a timed contest with multiple levels. Each level consists of a live web application that’s broken in an interesting way. Your challenge will be to ssh into the application hosts, diagnose the problem, and fix it quickly! The levels start off easy and get harder as you go. The team that solves all the levels the fastest wins! (And yes, there are prizes: grand prizes for the winners and runners up, and door prizes for everyone.) Doors open at 4:00pm and our crew will be on hand to make sure you are set up and ready to dive in when the Breakathon kicks off at 4:45pm. Breakathon will give you a chance to test your Ops Chops, win great prizes, and network with lots of great folks in the devops community, all while enjoying happy hour food and drinks.  AGENDA 4:00 p.m. - Doors open 4:45 p.m. - Introduction and overview 5:00 p.m.  Break and fix things! 7:30 p.m. - Pencils down, laptops closed, and final results are tallied and announced 8:00 p.m. - Breakathon concludes WHAT TO BRING Please bring a laptop capable of SSH’ing and loading a webpage, along with a laptop power adapter. You will also need to use your Github account, if you don’t have one it’s easy and free to set up. WHO SHOULD ENTER If you are currently in an SRE or ops role, this event was made for you. If you want to become more operationally savvy, join and learn along. Everyone is welcome! HAVE QUESTIONS? Send us an email at breakathon@pagerduty.com, we are happy to answer any questions that may arise.
