DESIGN THINKING FOR SOCIAL IMPACT
Though it might seem like a relatively new concept and buzzword, Design Thinking has been around for quite some time. It's now the moment to see how it can be used to generate solutions and prototypes addressing the world's biggest challenges.
This two-part workshop done in collaboration with IBM Design is in preparation of the Global Goals Jam Austin, which will take place on 21-22 September. The Global Goals Jam is a hackathon-type event that will take place simultaneously in more than 60 cities across the world. This year, the Global Goals Jam will focus on generations solutions for 5 of the 17 Global Goals:Goal 1: No PovertyGoal 2: Good Health and Well-BeingGoal 5: Gender EqualityGoal 7: Clean and Affordable EnergyGoal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
You could use this workshop to think deeper about what these 5 goals mean for our community and what solutions could be further developed. What is the theme for the hackathon?The main theme of the hackathon is “Blockchain vs Paper”. How does Blockchain enable the world to bypass paper? Participants will be asked to use the Factom blockchain to create solutions using data from the Factom Blockchain instead of what would be traditionally stored on paper.

Can I participate remotely? How many team members do I need?One member, at a minimum, must be in attendance in Austin for the presentation. Teams can be any size. (The average team size is 2.5.)
How do I form a team?We do encourage participants to start forming teams before the event. If you would like to start a team or are looking for a team to join, be sure to attend the Friday evening mixer or make an announcement at the opening ceremony on Saturday. What if I don't know how to code?You are still welcome! As long as you come willing to learn and ready to contribute ideas, you can contribute to a team.
What technical information do I need to know beforehand?None at all! Non-technical members are still welcome to participate. If you’d like to prepare yourself for the hackathon, feel free to browse the Factom Documentation located on our site.
What is the judging criteria? Judges will evaluate your hack based on the use of the Factom Protocol, Originality and Usefulness. The winning team will be decided by a jury comprised of industry experts as well as professionals at Factom.
What are the presentations like?You will have 5 minutes to pitch to a panel of judges followed by a five minute Q&A. You'll be provided with A/V support, a microphone, and a projector.
Will we be provided food during the Hackathon?Yes, you will be provided food and drinks throughout the Hackathon. You can also bring your own food and drinks if you prefer.
