Prototypes Ideas for a smarter City
Post your ideas here
Smart city is about connecting objects that have never been connected before to create value, better serve the citizens and optimize operations. The SIGFOX network is unleashing the potential of smart city by offering a cellular-grade, low power, low cost public network.
This disruptive technology allows devices to work for 15+ years with a standard battery and makes them so cheap that they can be distributed everywhere in the city. Here are several examples of applications that might tickle your fancy for this hackathon. Feel free to suggest more and think outside the box!
Air, Water quality, Noise control, Energy efficiency
Setting up ubiquitous sensors will help refine our understanding of where pollution happens, and where to focus efforts to limit its effects for healthier living. Is air quality better in neighborhoods with different transportation mixes? How does the weather affect energy consumption in businesses? Can the City cut its utility bills by smarter use of sensors?
Inventory/Fleet management/Sensors on City equipment
How can your City operate efficiently, and stream information from all parts of town in real-time to react faster? Monitoring fire hydrants with smart meters will help fix leaks faster, while saving time on overall maintenance. Geotagging equipment will help distributing equipment across government agencies and counties, and streamline operations. What else can you think of?
Traffic, transportation, parking, potholes
Bad traffic can impede both city-wide business and quality of life of its citizens. How can the City fluidify circulation, regulate parking and optimize the increasingly mixed means of transportations to most efficiently enable everyone to be on their way?
Security
Cities strive to keep their streets safe. Would panic buttons city-wide be feasible? How can having ubiquitous sensors reduce crime?
Kids, pets
Never lose them again! GPS trackers can now be integrated in ever-smaller form-factors, longer battery life and very low costs.
Seniors, autonomy
Can connected sensors help seniors live more autonomous lifestyles? How can the population least engaged on the Internet remain connected through connected "Things"?
Art, street art, performance, interactive performance
The streets belong to everyone. Let your inspiration flow freely.
Fire detection, Earthquake, flood warning systems, Disaster relief
San Francisco has a history with earthquakes and fires. How can these risks be mitigated with the right network of sensors? Can they be used as backup for basic services if the main infrastruture is knocked out of service?
Wild animal tracking
Raccoons, sometimes even coyotes can make their way into the city. Outfitting some with sensors can help us react better and promote safety.
Parks, urban farms, beekeeping
You can have a green thumb even in the city. How can connected sensors improve the food we produce, the health of our parks, and balance the fragile ecosystems around our streets?

Calling for ideas for "Apps" for Startup Hackathon Monterey Bay
20 Nov - 04:00 PM
Seaside, United States
The Startup Monterey Bay Hackathon (formerly the Ideas of March Hackathon) is a three day Mobile App development competition at California State University Monterey Bay that brings together teams of students to develop proto-type Apps for non-profits and small businesses in the Monterey Bay area.
During the weekend teams of students will produce a real, working prototype application in return for meals and a chance for fame and fortune, should one create the next killer app. We are looking for App ideas from local community organizations, small businesses, startups, and university departments.
If your organization, company or department is interested, please Register and describe your idea for an App.
Provide a short description no later than Monday, November 16th that can be sent to the students ahead of time.
Have someone from your organization give a 2-3 minute pitch to the students on Friday, November 20th, at 4pm. This really helps in getting your App idea chosen.
Have someone from your organization available by phone to answer questions from the team about your App idea. Or stop by to visit the team.
Join us on Sunday, November 20th beginning at 1:00pm to see the Apps, see the winning Apps, and celebrate with the students on their hard work.
The event kicks off on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 4:00 pm with ideas proposed by Monterey Bay community organizations and small businesses. Students will choose which Apps they are interested in working on and teams will be formed on those chosen by at least 4 students.
Teams will have the rest of the weekend to build a working prototype application. The Apps will be evaluated by judges on Sunday, November 22, 2015 afternoon and the winners chosen.
ThinkThank Meetup to Hack For Good
17 Nov - 06:00 PM
San Francisco, United States
ThinkThank (n. \ˈthiŋkˈthaŋk\): A collaborative network focused on solving social-sector challenges by connecting professionals that help realize ideas and solutions that create impact.
Non-profit and social enterprises have a myriad of problems: Scaling, operations, marketing, technology, the list goes on. Yet, there are many altruistic professionals in the private sector want to find a way to give that uses their skills and engage directly with the causes they believe in.
ThinkThank envisions a world where “giving” is redefined. Where the toughest challenges facing the social sector are tackled, the brightest ideas implemented, and their stories of impact shared with the world. By curating hackathon-esque events, this medium provides the collaborative space for these professionals to provide much needed insight to social-sector organizations. We collaborate at events, but also are building an ongoing network of people, resources, and opportunities to help these groups.
Sponsored by Executive Path*
The structure of this event is:
Social Enterprises and nonprofits explain a problem they are facing or pitch an idea they are trying to implement.
We group them with peers doing work in those areas, and assign the best moderators and do-gooder professionals.
Groups hack for just under an hour, and present back the potential solutions and evolutions ideas.
After everyone networks and finds great projects to keep working on until the next month’s ThinkThank.
Why go?
For professional that wants to give more: ThinkThank gives you a easy, fun, and impactful way to give while networking with your peers.
For nonprofits that need help: Consulting is expensive, but not at ThinkThank. We have the best and brightest at 0 cost and connect you to longer term help.
There will be delicious beer, wine, and food provided to fuel your innovation…
*Executive Path conducts scientific research to gain a deeper understanding of the changing work environment with the goal of using that data to create new infrastructure, strategy, and attitudes for workers, companies and communities.
