Call for Code hackathon - Silicon Valley
25 Aug - 08:00 AM
Fremont, United States
Calling all Developers, Designers, and Domain Experts
On August 25th, 2018, the City of Fremont, 42 US, Silicon Valley Insider, and Tulip Industries are teaming up with IBM to host a one day hackathon to help developers, engineers, designers, and emergency responders work on projects around Natural Disaster Preparedness and Relief during wildfires.
This hackathon is a satellite event for the Call for Code Challenge (callforcode.org) providing a chance to dedicate time to brainstorm, plan, and start building your submission for the challenge which closes on September 28. Projects built at the hackathon will be judged at the end of the day for a local grand prize.
On average, every day natural disasters will directly impact 80,000 people, costing the global economy more than $270 million. What if technology could help improve these figures? That’s exactly what Call for Code is setting out to do. It asks developers to work out how to use AI, Blockchain, Cloud, Data, and IoT technologies most effectively to improve communities’ disaster preparedness and resiliency.
With 17 big blazes burning across California thus far in 2018, fire damage is likely to set an all-time record. In 2017 estimated lost from California wildfires totaled $10 to $12 billion, we have a unique perspective that can help drive innovation in this field. We are developers, makers and builders who have lived through disasters. We know what is at stake. Bring your best!

Culture Industry Exposition
24 Aug - 07:00 PM
San Francisco, United States
Culture Industry Exposition is a conceptual art experience and hackathon. It brings together creative and developer ecosystems, artists and innovators, philosophers and activists, to repurpose the industry of culture. We will reimagine our relationship to media, how artists and audiences connect, and how crypto-economics can improve our global systems for good. This includes everything from quality of life to integrity of our environmental ecologies. Culture Industry involves the whole mosaic of modernity, and this exposition will be a scrappy, fun way to recapture the times.
Friday night (8/24) will kickstart the art exhibition component of the exposition with a reception for the artists and community. Libations, conversations, and pretty paintings abound, who knows where the night will take us?
Saturday (8/25) will be a day-long sprint into an evening party. Morning panel discussion leads into workshops and a hackathon, inspired by ideas from the community, as well the artist’s experiences.
The artwork on display will be part of a live auction that integrates blockchain technology. There will be a “collective commission” piece participants will also have the opportunity to invest in and help shape. We will have a sweet lineup of DJs to ensure we spend the evenings dancing as we enjoy the art and each other's company.
