We know some rules are meant to be broken, but you should probably (read: definitely) stick by these:
1. Fresh Code - We all start coding at the same time. It’s cool to work on designs beforehand, digital mockups, open source frameworks, and anything else available to everyone, but keep things within fair limits.
2. Code Review - Winning teams may be subject to a code-review at some point following the event or immediately before winning. This is to ensure that all code used is in fact fresh.
3. Ownership and IP - You own your IP and whatever you create. Simple as that.
4. Team Size - No more than five people.
5. Submissions - Each hackathon has its individual hackathon.io page where projects need to be submitted by the designated time. You’ll receive an email with instructions on how to do just that.
6. Demos - You’ll have 2 minutes to demo the functionality of your project and talk through your idea, and 1 minute for Q&A from judges.
7. Be cool to your fellow hackers! Check out our Code of Conduct.
How is the hackathon judged?Projects will be judged based on the following criteria, with a total of 5 points per criteria:
Fundability: How fundable is this idea? Is there potential for a sustainable business model?
Execution: How well was the project executed and explained? Did it work?
UI/UX: Beyond design, was the end-to-end user experience for the solution considered?
Originality: How original, creative or unique is the idea?
Scalability: How scalable is the solution? Will it make an impact?

French Higher Ed Hackathon: Visualization Challenge!
21 Apr - 09:00 AM
San Francisco, United States
Background
The Embassy of France in th US, in partnership with the University of San Francisco Data Institute, Big Data Hubs West, and Berkeley Institute of Data Science is excited to host a student hackathon to encourage Franco-US integration, particularly in higher education. After 3 succesful editions in Washington DC, we are hosting our first edition in San Francisco.
This hackathon is open to technical and non-technical participants alike, focused on creating static and dynamic data visualizations to explore Franco-US cultural integration through student travel. The goal is to use data storytelling to identity and better target students based in US in order to attract them to study abroad in France.
Topic: Visualization Challenge - "Visualize That Student!"
The Higher Education Department of the Embassy of France in the US plays a key role in promoting opportunities and advocating for education abroad. As part of its hope for resurgence, France is looking to engage communities worldwide as part of a greater campaign to exclaim that “France is Back!” One particular focus is on higher education and educating students looking to study in foreign countries, particularly students in the United States. Where in the past year the Embassy has charged its team to advocate and examine the ways that students find programs, this year their team, as an extension of Campus France, looks to build a marketing campaign to engage and inform.
Submissions may include (but are not limited to) a marketing campaign, data visualizations of provided French study abroad data and websites matching students to desired study abroad destinations.

Genentech Hackathon
20 Apr - 08:30 AM
Berkeley, United States
DESCRIPTION
Join us for the first ever Genentech / BCHT Hackathon! Come spend the day ideating and networking with Genentech and fellow graduate students on a question of strategic importance to Genentech and the patients it serves. Please read below for details on the event, we hope you can make it!
Challenge/Prompt
Genentech's Access Solutions team is a key cog in the company. Their mission is to help patients access the Genentech medicines they need. After a Genentech product is prescribed, Access Solutions helps providers and patients navigate questions regarding insurance coverage, reimbursement, and financial support. Learn more about Access Solutions services at https://www.genentech-access.com/hcp.html.
As the US healthcare space and patient needs evolve, so must Access Solutions. Therefore, we are challenging Hackathon teams to create a scalable, sustainable, and flexible Access Solutions operating model that simultaneously allows them to address annual volume growth (without adding staff proportionally) and prepares them to best serve the patient of tomorrow. Specifically, we'd like teams to consider:
What innovative approaches or technologies might Access Solutions adopt to scale their services cost effectively?
As Genentech’s portfolio expands into new therapeutic areas, how might Access Solutions address the needs of increasingly diverse patient populations?
How might Access Solutions services need to evolve given macro trends in healthcare and consumerism?
To help teams consider this challenge, Genentech will make a background information slide deck available digitally starting 4/13 and present that information live at the start of the Hackathon. Additionally, Genentech Access Solutions and managed care experts will be available throughout the day of the Hackathon to talk through questions.
Structure
Teams of 4-5 will spend the day working together to generate innovative approaches to the strategic challenge outlined below. At the end of the day, teams submit a short deliverable and live presentation of that deliverable to a team of Genentech experts. Following the event, a Genentech team will evaluate the deliverables and decide upon one winning team and one runner-up. The winning team will receive $5,000 and the runner-up will receive $2,500.
In order to facilitate team formation, we are asking students to please use this Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CAIB2gzj7UcxELwthIgkkGoPSyrVHu9-p91dB8oWJeo/edit?usp=sharing) to sign up for a team in addition to registering through this Eventbrite page. Please don't forget to do both!
